Update: Ryan Dempster Has (Not?) Been Traded to the Atlanta Braves
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster has been traded to the Atlanta Braves, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The Cubs ace does have a no-trade clause in his contract but is expected to approve the deal. As of now, no one seems to know exactly who the Cubs will be getting in return. Pitching prospect Randall Delgado? Perhaps.
Dempster has been pitching very well of late after experiencing somewhat of an ugly May, rendering him utterly useless as a member of the Chicago Cubs, one of the two saggy boobs residing in the NL Central.
Over his last 39 innings pitched, he has given up just four runs, and in four starts against teams in the NL East, he sports an ERA of 0.70 ERA to go along with 29 strikeouts in 25 innings. Braves fans should probably caution themselves from getting instantly aroused though, as these things tend to have a way of evening out. You know, small sample size and all.
Dempster is in the final year of his contract.

Update: According to @RyanDempsterFDN, there was no trade. For what it is worth, that is an unverified account. The strange thing about this trade – or non-trade – is that the original source appears to be CBS Sports and not some fake Twitter. We will keep you updated.
Update 2: ESPN has a source telling Keith Law the trade is real. USA Today cites a source in the Braves’ front office.
Update 3: @RyanDempsterFDN is Dempster’s charity’s Twitter. So as of right now, this trade did not happen. Unless it did.

The Cum Dempster.
July 23rd, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Rick Nash is also a New York Ranger.
July 23rd, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Hopefully Ryan Dempster, given the title of the post…
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:00 PM
ESPN says Randall Delgado.
As does SC.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:00 PM
annnnnnnnnnd that made me laugh loud enough for coworkers to notice
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Delgado would be nice
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Fixed.
Also, prefer headline rather than title. Please fix.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:01 PM
This trade was a Dempster Fire.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Ha, I didn’t even notice the original typo. Braves get Dempster, Cubs get Delgado.
Braves are pushing most of their chips in — win one for the Gipper, err, Chipper, boys.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Cubs got Randall Delgado. Third best prospect in the Braves system. Only 5 starts at AAA ball, falls right into the full year of AAA ball development plan for the Cubs at this juncture. Could be a September call-up or possibly usurp the 5th starter job from Volstad or Randy Wells. Saw him throw against the Nats on Saturday. He’s got a live arm, throw a 4-seamer, 2-seamer, curve and changeup. He tips his curveball with his arm-slot according to scouting reports.
This is a dynamite return for a 3 month rental. I am very pleased with this trade.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:02 PM
For real? I wonder if Columbus got the ridiculous haul they wanted.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:02 PM
This guy has been lights out lately. Gonna be some good pitching match-ups when Atlanta and Washington meet again.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
I’ll never understand these trades. Third best prospect for a 35-year-old rental? Ok.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
HahahahahahahahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:04 PM
I don’t like giving up Delgado but we’ve got other arms in our system, namely Julio Teheran and Arodys Vizcaino. Hopefully Brandon Beach will recover alright. We’ll take our chances.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:04 PM

Dubinsky, Anisimov, Erixson and a 1st round pick. It’s actually a OK trade considering Glen Sather and Scott Howson were the guys involved making it. Rangers only lose Erixson (Geez seems to like him, I know nothing about him) and Dubi while the Rangers can now field a line of Marian Gaborik, Brad Richards and Rick Nash/Ryan Callahan.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:05 PM
These “Paterno Family” statements would be a lot more tolerable if they were being issued by a fake twitter account satirizing this whole mess.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Win now or win later is the driving force here. The Braves front office thinks it can win this year and has enough prospects that it can afford to lose one for a solid starter. Our starting pitching has been hit hard by injuries so something had to happen.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:06 PM
what a dempster fire.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Since Atlanta can’t get picks, no matter the tender/offer, it’s a nice haul indeed.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:06 PM
god damnit…
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Cubs probably asked and then heard laughter for a few minutes on the other end of the phone.
Probably asked and then settled on Delgado. Vizcaino has a better arm but he’s also coming off an injury so that probably deterred the Cubs front office from really having a genuine interest. I like Vizcaino a lot though. He’s probably a #2 projection whereas Delgado’s ceiling is a #3.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:07 PM
other arms in our system, namely Julio Teheran and Arodys Vizcaino. Hopefully Brandon Beach will recover alright.
That’s a powerful trio of arms. Calls to mind the heyday of Paul Wilson, Jason Isringhausen, and… the other guy. Who was the other guy again?
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Agreed. wish I had held onto him in my fantasy league, no run support from the Cubs and he just couldn’t get the wins. I believe lowest ERA of his career. Good move by the Braves. Cuck the Fubs
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
I am surprised Sean Gilmartin wasn’t even mentioned in speculation. Probably the most polished Braves prospect. Couple seasons at Florida State, no control issues and already capable of giving 6-7 solid innings. Plus, he’s left-handed.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Not sure this exactly puts them over the top.
Note: Now that I’ve said this, pencil in the Braves as your World Series champs.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Actually, I’d be surprised if the Braves gave up Delgado rather than Teheran. Atlanta has to see that ship sinking
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
I’d laugh at the Braves, but the Giants are surely on the verge of trading whatever is left of their farm for Chris Perez.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Pulsipher?
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Note: Now that I’ve said this, pencil in the Braves as your World Series champs.
The O’s aren’t losing that series
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Yeah, I figured that was the thought process. And no way would they give up Teheran.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:09 PM
I like this move a lot for the Cubs, get cost controlled pitcher for the next five years. Well done Theo & Jed. And we all know Frediot will break Dempster.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Delgado is a steep price for Dempster. Braves were high on him and viewed him as a top of the rotation starter.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Brandon Belt…you know it’s going to happen.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Yes, Pulsipher was the other one! While we’re at ti, I just remembered that Cuckthefubs was the commenter looking for advice on procuring services from a hooker that he planned on killing in Miami. Long live Cuckthefubs
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
And no way would they give up Teheran.
He’s so valuable he’s being defended by the Revolutionary Guard.
/geopolitical veal
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
I don’t think anyone has used “dempster diving” yet…you can have that one.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
It doesn’t. Dempster is due for a regression but he’s probably the least expensive option out there for SP trades. He’ll be a solid #3-4 guy for the Braves the rest of the way and he’s always been one of best clubhouse guys for the Cubs. Once the Braves lost Beachy, they had to make a move. This makes a lot of sense Atlanta.
I saw the AJC Braves guy speculating about the Braves possibly re-signing Dempster. Doubtful. Mostly because of his daughter. The Dempsters love the facilities and the staff here in Chicago that cares for her. Well documented.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Billy Pulsipher!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Teheran is not the well-regarded prospect you may remember from a year ago. He’s good but more like Edwin Jackson good than “we can’t trade this guy!” good
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Hope not. Sergio Romo can fill in until Casilla rights the ship from that knee injury. Casilla still has the stuff, just can’t find the target since that injury.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Sigh.
I think he’s been doing a better job with Kimbrel this season, among others.

Pours one out for believing Mike Mussina would never leave Baltimore
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Zero upside. Scouts see him simply as a back-end rotation guy. Gotta for the guy with more upside if you’re Theo.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Where’s grayson, I want to talk about the Astros.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Generation K, HILARIOUS!
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Hey-o!
It really irritates me when people can’t seem to grasp that his name is pronounced Te-e-ron, not like the Iranian capital. But Chip Caray has consistently done so.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Meh, better to write it Teh-eh-ron
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:16 PM
And Cliff Lee with Texas, I know. But Dempster’s situation is unique. Just Google Riley Dempster and you’ll see why. Rare condition. Like I said, Dempster loves the people that provide her care here.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:17 PM
It’s not delivery, it’s DiGeorge Syndrome.
/fantasy team name of the century, mother fucker
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Let’s not have a repeat. We’re also not dumb enough to nickname a trio of pitchers Generation K. At least, I hope not.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:18 PM
It’s not OK. It’s garbage. WHY did realignment have to be shelved? If Columbus moves to the East. Nash is a Wing. Rangers top 6 is loaded with
Nash,Gaborik,Richards, Callahan, Krieder, Hagelin and Stepan.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Doyle Alexander agrees.
//Smoltz was actually a terrible prospect at that time. 4-10 and ERA of 5.68 in Double A.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:20 PM
The Fan reached up to NH? Guessing you could only get it at night?
I used to listen to 840 WHAS (Louisville, for Cawood Ledford) at night in RI. Could sometimes get Chicago station (WLS?). You kids don’t know how good you have it with this newfangled internet thing and satellite TV.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Dude. Maybe Dempster should wear #22?
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Ha, Mussina was a wise man. Baltimore is a DUMP.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:20 PM
It’s looking like this will be the order down the stretch:
Hudson
Hanson
Dempster
Sheets
Take your pick, Minor or Jurrjens. I prefer Minor because Jurrjens is actually a well-documented dumpster fire.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Yep. I both Meeted the Mets and Greeted the Mets. Probably listened to as much Mets ball as Red Sox growing up. But always managed to hate the Yankees.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Penn State? Also a dumpster fire.
Detroit Lions? Also believed to be a dumpster fire.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Glen Sather probably at the titty bar with Shane Doan right now figuring out how to add him to this list.
Just like Suter was going to be too, right? And Parise?

I was never a fan of the team, just listened to them. I was 3 years old in 1986, so I never had the proper outrage against the Mets, just the Yankees. I was probably more a fan of the Knicks because of WFAN… Charlies Oakley and Ward, and John Wallace were my favorite basketball players of the 90′s.

That’s cool. I kept an old fashioned radio up for my attic. I know I could get stations from here to the rockies with it, despite that John Denver being full of shit.

I used my Astros Buddies pocket radio to listen to Astros games after I went to bed when I was 4. I still have no idea how I used to fall asleep listening to Milo Hamilton yelling at the top of his lungs.
July 23rd, 2012 at 3:39 PM
No Stepan, No Kreider, No JT Miller, No Hagelin, No McDonagh. Rangers win this trade lopsided even if Erixon becomes a top 2 defensman (which I think he will). Someone from the blue line had to go and if Sauer can come back the Rangers still have some guys in the minors with upside. (Mcilrath etc).
Can’t believe Columbus settled for this relatively early. They could have gotten this right before camp (if there is camp). I do think Dubinsky will be a lot better, but Dubinsky and Anisimov? Yikes.

I saw the AJC Braves guy speculating about the Braves possibly re-signing Dempster. Doubtful. Mostly because of his daughter. The Dempsters love the facilities and the staff here in Chicago that cares for her. Well documented.
But … it’s the Cubs. You don’t think he’d sign next year with the White Sox do you? Maybe the Brewers?
Emory and Children’s Healthcare in Atlanta are set up helping kids with the same issue as his daughter.
July 23rd, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Why would either of these teams make this trade? Braves arent winning anything and Delagdo is nothing but a 5 starter who will thrown log relief in 3 years 2 after having surgery.
July 23rd, 2012 at 4:20 PM
baseball’s for fags, scoutmaster.
