Penn State Punished by the Big Ten: No Bowl Revenue Share and Ineligible for Big Ten Title Game For Four Years

Penn State took a beating from the NCAA this morning, and the Big Ten has just announced further penalties:

* Penn State will be ineligible to receive its share of conference bowl revenue for 4 years (which should be about $13 million)

* Penn State ineligible for the Big Ten conference title game four four years

* Penn State is censured. One sportswriter says that means Penn State will have no say in conference policy.

The Nittany Lions, who struggled the last two years following back-to-back Top 10 finishes in 2008 and 2009, are going to be crippled for probably a decade. Pete Thamel of the Times thinks it could be eight years before they get back to 85 scholarships. Recruiting for the next few years will be a challenge; what happens when Bill O’Brien bails after three straight losing seasons? Then what? The stench of Sandusky’s crimes and Paterno’s cover-up will linger for years.

Problem is they weren’t getting elite recruits for the better part of the last decade because of Paterno’s refusal to leave the program. If they went down at a talent and attraction level similar to USC’s when they got hit, it’s a different story, but they weren’t anywhere close to that.

I assume this was said in jest, but certainly all of them will be soon. Even if one of them manages to miss jail time somehow, they are likely to be sued several times in civil court.

Does anyone know if incoming freshman at PSU have tuition locked down for four years? If not these punishments are miserable for sophomore attendees, if they do then the school will probably suffer a massive drop in applications come next November as students decide to be more economical.
