Andres Nocioni of Argentina Was Unimpressed with the US Olympic Basketball Team
Team USA put together another unimpressive performance in an Olympic exhibition, beating Argentina 86-80. On the heels of an at-times unimpressive victory over Brazil – after trailing by 10 in the first half – there’s mild cause for concern about the USA bringing home the Gold next month in England. Argentina cut the US lead to four in the 4th quarter, and afterward, Andres Nocioni had this to say about the Americans:
“The U.S. team will have to work very hard for the gold medal and I’m not so sure they will get it.”
He’s right, of course. Initially, the concern were interior size, but the more I watch this team, I wonder if we’re going to see every one of their opponents focus on another area: Physical play. Specifically, NBA players (such as Anderson Varejao and Luis Scola) getting chippy (on purpose?) with Americans. Brazil and Argentina both got physical with the Americans, either in an attempt to show their non-NBA teammates there’s no reason to fear Team USA, or to make them think twice about attacking the basket. The 1992 Dream Team never had to deal with that crap.
The physical play appears to have had an impact on the Americans – they’ve settled for more 3-pointers (13-of-34 against Argentina; Kevin Durant was 7-of-11). And when they get to the foul line, they’re not getting the job done: (15-for-26 vs. Argentina, 16-of-23 vs. Brazil). Again, these games are only exhibitions. But Spain, which has the Gasol brothers plus Serge Ibaka is significantly better than Brazil and Argentina. (It really is too bad Ricky Rubio won’t play.)
Obviously, Team USA is the team to beat in England. No other team in the field has a player like LeBron who can absolutely take over offensively (30 points vs. Brazil). If you had to pick the best shooter in the Olympics, good luck finding someone better than Kevin Durant. Worst case scenario: Durant is off against Spain, LeBron doesn’t attack the basket easily against the Gasols and Ibaka, and Spain controls tempo, keeping the score in the 60s. A team that has been together for less than a month beat a team that has been together for 15 plus years. What does that say about Argentina, or are we only going to run stories about how the U.S. CAN lose?

us olympic basketball team not impressed with andres nocioni’s definition of needing to work hard against teams that are forced to play players like andres nocioni.

I will say this, The Dream Team didn’t have the level of competition that the Olympic teams face today.

The USA are underdogs versus the field certainly.
So talking about how they might lose is perfectly fair to me.

How many players from the 2004 gold medal team are on the Argentina squad?
Also, I am not sure you can characterize Nocioni’s as unimpressed. Sounds like he is saying though they are the favorites, the US is not the only team capable of winning gold. He’s right.

The US could have won with college kids in ’92. The Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, who won gold/silver in ’88, were geopolitically divided in ’92. The “unified team” did not include Lithuania and the team known as “Yugoslavia” did not include Croatia.

There’s not a team in the field that matches the U.S depth at the wing positions. The talk about the U.S. not having depth at the center spot has been highly overblown. The U.S. has had the dominant big man in every Olympics, even the ones they lost and the big men have been mostly blah. The international game is a precision movement perimeter game. If Spain tries to play outside of their identity and force the ball inside, they’ll lose by 30.

Just wait til the USMNT loses 1-0 to Agentina in a Copa America. Michael Bradley can then say we’re not so sure they can beat Brazil despite having Messi. HA! That’ll show them.

I could give two shits about Olympic basketball. I guess I should, but I can’t. Do the soccer powers get worked up over Olympic soccer? I have no idea.

I don’t know, because I couldn’t even pinch off a shit for soccer.

Me too. I can’t remember watching a minute of it since 1992. Maybe (probably) I did some in 1996 but not sure.

I don’t think so, there are enough bigger tournaments that I’ve heard arguments that it should be dropped as an Olympic sport along with tennis which suffers from the same thing

I can’t take him seriously, because whenever I hear his name, I think of Nutella.

Not really. The age restrictions mean it is essentially youth squads. They ranked well below the World Cup, Champions League, Euro Cup, Copa America and so forth. I’d be happier if the USMNT won the Gold Cup than the Olympics,

Melo was a sterling -19 for this game. Looked like he was playing while holding hot dogs under his arm pits.

Durant, Kobe, LeBron down the stretch in every “close” game (if they need them) I like their chances.

I’m so impressed with the plus minus stat.
