The Joe Paterno Statue Is Coming Down This Morning [VIDEO]

As first reported by Kimberly Jones of the NFL Network last week, the Joe Paterno statue at Penn State is coming down this weekend. Crews are currently prepping the site in preparation for removing it this morning.
Penn State President Rodney Erickson has released a statement this morning on the removal of the statute.
I now believe that, contrary to its original intention, Coach Paterno’s statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing in our University and beyond. For that reason, I have decided that it is in the best interest of our university and public safety to remove the statue and store it in a secure location. I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse.
Here is a video stream of the efforts to remove the statue this morning. They have put up blue tarp around the scene, and a forklift is positioned as crews work with jackhammers.

[UPDATE] The statue is down, and here is a symbolic photo of the statue covered up with a tarp with the workers around it, with the raised finger pointing upward.

Am no Paterno apologist. That last sentence almost makes it seem like Paterno was directly responsible for the abuse. He could have done a better job with that.

On to the next symbol to focus the outrage. What’s it going to be?

Looking forward to another long string of comments arguing about Paterno that possibly ends in a ban.

Yes, I meant to add that in, and then forgot, was a long statement. The library not changing its name, according to President.

Notice he said it would be stored in a secure location. To me, that suggests it may come back someday. Whether it should or not is a matter of debate, but clearly it’s such a lightning rod right now it should come down. The media wanted a scalp, and it got it.
Now crank up the outrage machine again in a few weeks as Penn State builds up to its first game.

Presser at 9 AM tomorrow by the NCAA to announce “unprecedented” sanctions per Armen Katayian.

I dunno. Does this either a) punish the appropriate person/persons or b) insure this horrific period of ongoing abuse never happens again?
I was talking with friends about this yesterday morning – when we build statues to men (especially those still alive), is it idolatry?
And, what happens when the honoree does something to let us down/tarnish his image? Would the powers that be have even built the statue if they knew then what they know now?

all i can think about is the Rocky statue that they built of him during his title reign. Even he got mad and threw his helmet at it.

This whole thing reminds me of a speech given by Clive Owen in the movie Inside Man:
Respect is the ultimate currency. I was stealing from a man who traded his away for a few dollars. And then he tried to wash away his guilt. Drown it in a lifetime of good deeds and a sea of respectability. It almost worked, too. But inevitably, the further you run from your sins, the more exhausted you are when they catch up to you. And they do. Certain. It will not fail.

Dumbasses who think this is all a witch hunt.

Fools. Bureaucratic fools! … They don’t know what they’ve got there. We cold called Penn State on EXACTLY what they will do with the Paterno statue, but their only response was “Top Men” were dealing with it.

If they re-erect the statue, it will be no longer at six kadan height. They will subtratct one kadan.
