Paterno Family Statement: “Tearing Down the Statue of Joe Paterno Does Not Serve the Victims”
The Paterno Family has released a statement in the aftermath of the removal of Joe Paterno’s statue this morning from the Penn State campus.
Tearing down the statue of Joe Paterno does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky’s horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State Community. We believe the only way to help the victims is to uncover the full truth. The Freeh report, though it has been accepted by the media as the definitive conclusion on the Sandusky scandal, is the equivalent of an indictment — a charging document written by a prosecutor — and an incomplete and unofficial one at that.
To those who truly want to know the truth about Sandusky, it should matter that Joe Paterno has never had a hearing; that his legal counsel has never been able to interview key witnesses, all of whom are represented by lawyers and therefore unavailable; that there has never been an opportunity to review critical evidence which has not been made public; that selective evidence and the opinion of Mr Freeh is treated as the equivalent of a fair trial. Despite this obviously flawed and one-sided presentation, the University believes it must acquiesce and accept that Joe Paterno has been given a fair and complete hearing. We think the better course would have been for the University to take a strong stand in support of due process so that the complete truth can be uncovered.
It is not the University’s responsibility to defend or protect Joe Paterno. But they at least should have acknowledged that important legal cases are still pending and that the record on Joe Paterno, the Board and other key players is far from complete.

I guess they have to say this stuff but I really wish the family would just go away already….what more could they possibly need to see before acknowledging that JoePa was involved in the cover up. I understand they need time to accept and process this new image of their father – just wish they would do so quietly.

Me too. Defending his legacy in the face of the facts seems odd and naive.

Sounds like the Paterno family is a scumbag lawyer.

And to add, I’m not sure they should really be speaking for the victims, although their self-serving statements ooze victimization. I’m guessing that most of the actual victims don’t give a rats ass at this moment about what they and their former patriarch think and feel right about now.

Well, and they miss the point that he did have a hearing, with a Grand Jury, and he lied.

Geee, I wonder why JoePa died so quickly after this story broke. Dear Paterno family, just be glad your daddy left you a lot of money and quit trying to defend his indefensible actions. The one thing I’ll never understand though is why they continued to allow Sanduski on campus. I can see where they would fire him after the locker room incident and keep it quiet, but why allow him back and let him use your facilities to keep stalking kids? He had something on JoePa or Penn State. If he didn’t, he would have “retired” and never retuned to campus.

If i’m a victim, it’s a small consolation, but a consolation nonetheless.

Dear Paterno family,
Be lucky the old man’s name is still on the library.
Sincerely,
A whole lot of people

The Paterno family needs to STFU.

Dear Paterno family:
How dear you interfere with us drawing our own conclusions and collective narratives by defending your husband, father, and friend. Communal outrage feels so good no matter how uninformed.
Sincerely

Dear Paterno Family,
We would like to thank your father. Because of your father and his desire to coverup the pedophile, the entire Penn State football program will be shut down and will now be behind the likes of Indiana, Minnesota and Purdue for the next 10 years.
Sincerely,
Indiana, Minnesota and Purdue

I’ve never remotely tried to defend Joe or any of the others’ action, but statements like this are moronic. The hearing was regarding Sandusky’s actions, no JoePa’s. At a Grand Jury hearing you answer (ideally truthfully) what’s asked of you – it’s not a public forum for you to espouse whatever facts/opinions you feel are relevant. The family’s statement is that Joe has not had due process, not Jerry.
/Yes – it does seem conclusive that Joe lied to the Grand Jury
//Yes – the family (though I understand their intentions) needs to STFU
/facepalm

As far as I’m concerned they can have their own narrative, but every statement has them aligning their views with the victims. Feel free to defend JoePa, but my guess is that JoePa’s reputation isn’t the mother’s of those boys first concern. Their personal “investigation” has nothing to do with helping the victims and they need to stop acting as if it does.

What does JoePa need due process for? He’s dead. He’s not going to be prosecuted. The statue thing is just a PR move, it’s not like he has to be found guilty in a court of law for it to be taken down. It would take an impressive amount of counter-evidence to sway public opinion at this point.
