Ernie Els Wins The British Open, as Adam Scott Bogeys Last Four Holes
Adam Scott looked like he was cruising to the Claret Jug as Sunday progressed. Tiger Woods fell off with a triple bogey at the sixth hole, and never could mount a charge. Brandt Snedeker (74) and Graeme McDowell (75) had bad final rounds. Only Ernie Els, among those with a realistic chance entering the day, was staying within anywhere approaching striking distance.
Even then, though, it was a longshot. Through 10 holes, college basketball stats wizard Ken Pomeroy had Scott at 90% and Els at 4%. After 11, it was 90% and 3%. Through 13 (for Scott), it was 92% and 8%, with no one else given a chance.
After Scott’s birdie on fourteen, Pomeroy declared him the winner: “It’s over”. Els had two holes remaining, Scott had 4 left, with a 4 stroke lead.
A bogey by Scott left the door open, and then Els made a key putt on 18th to get to 7 under. Scott bogeyed again, and then disaster struck when Scott hit his second shot on #17 into the deep grass around the green. He could not get up and down, and went to #18 tied. The disaster continued on 18, with the tee shot finding a fairway bunker. He had to punch out sideways, and get up and down. His iron shot was true, but his putt just missed.
Ernie Els, British Open Champion. The run of first time winners ends in improbable and dramatic fashion.

Strikes me as the type of tournament where everyone remembers who lost more than who won (mitigated by Els being as famous as he is). It’d take some effort to remember who won the years Rocca and Van de Velde lost.
Good for Scott handling it as he did. He and Snedeker will eventually have some very emotional breakthrough major wins in the future.

“Ernie Els … I guess he could pull it off”

I could have sworn since Steve Williams was his caddie, Adam Scott was guaranteed victory since Williams has “won” 14 majors previously.
Man I hate that narrative.
/good for Big Ern

always good to see the big easy in the winner’s circle – congrats to him.
nothing’s changed with adam scott, his putter, and his ability to choke with class.
mcdowell’s 3-wood on 11 was a humbling moment. not sure what the hell that was about.
tiger is still the best player in the world.

Mad props to TBL, who boldly predicted that one could “guess” that Els might have a shot at winning. Bold, man, bold.

Nice picture of Easy E. He looks like some retard that just got something taken away from him.

Damn, I even let Adam borrow my son’s putter.

Never stop trolling, TBL. Never stop.

Ernie played well in the final round and waited for someone to collapse. This type of thing isn’t uncommon in the British Open. The biggest collapse that I remember was Jean Van de Velde’s at the 1999 British Open. Needing a double bogey on the 18th hole to win the Open, he shot a triple Bogey and then lost in the playoff.

Ha. I left work and played golf with my dad after Scott birdied 14. I had the stereo on but I heard he blew it right as I pulled into the course. Gag.

I’m not sure what’s more pronounced. DeNiro’s disdain for Sly, or his appreciation of that mid-day sammich.
