British Open Leaderboard: Adam Scott Might Win His First Major; Tiger Woods Probably Won’t Rally to Victory
* This will probably be the 10th straight major that ends with a 1st-time winner. Adam Scott the leader by four shots, has never won a Major. Neither has Brandt Snedeker, who is tied for 2nd place.
* Graeme McDowell, who was terrific Saturday and is tied with Snedeker four shots back, has won a Major. The US Open in 2010.
* Tiger Woods is five shots back, but has never come-from-behind after 54 holes to win a major. His Major-less drought is likely to continue.
* For our South African readers who love Ernie Els … sure, I guess he could pull it off. He’s won the US Open twice and the British Open once (2002), but is six shots off the pace.
* Since you’re curious, the largest comeback ever to win a Major was by Paul Lawrie, who famously rallied at the 1999 British Open to defeat Jean van de Velde (and Justin Leonard) in a playoff. Here’s some video of the collapse at Carnoustie:

damn. tiger did himself zero point zero favors there. fuck

It’d be nice to see Scott validated by a victory but he needs to prove it. McDowell is a stone cold killer and has the back nine to chase down Scott. A playoff would favor GMac considerably IMO.
I’d love to slag Woods and say “the first rule of bunker play is to get out of the bunker” but he’s the guy that makes sick shots like at Memorial. If he thought he could get out you have to defer.

The monotony of the six par 4′s at the end are a good set up for Scott. He can establish some continuity.

4 strokes, 9 to go.
July 22nd, 2012 at 11:40 AM
There’s going to be a lot of 25 handicaps this afternoon telling Tiger what he should have done.
July 22nd, 2012 at 11:44 AM
I just hope if he coasts to an ‘easy’ win, that doesn’t come back to him as a negative from the talking heads who say he can’t win a close major with lots of pressure. He struck the ball amazing for 63 holes to earn the right to lag 20 foot birdie putts on the back 9 Sunday.
July 22nd, 2012 at 11:47 AM
I’m more amazing you don’t see penalties on those bunkers with the ball ricocheting off the face of the bunker either back on their person, or off their club (Maggert style).
July 22nd, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Yeah that’s the hole point is to take everybody to the woodshed so you don’t have to grind it out. That’s dominating. Have people crumble trying to make up huge deficits. God knows Tiger has about 1/2 his majors earned that way.
July 22nd, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Again on the topic of pressure, Scott will have been either first or 2nd almost the entire tournmanet. That’s tough. Not a true wire-to-wire victory but that’s two late weekend tee times and plenty of baggage.

All along I thought it was silly for Tiger to try to chase down Scott… he had to chase down second place and put a number up. Before the triple, I figure -8 was the goal. Getting to -7 would be a small miracle, and I think he still has to aim for that number rather than playing reckless and chasing Scott at -9.

If he wins, Scott will have won on five continents, 5 tours, will have won a major, a WGC, a TPC at Sawgrass and a Tour Championship among 15 pga/euro wins. He’ll have a best finish of 1 at the Open, a 2 at Augusta and a 3rd at PGA (and 12th at US Open).
By the age of 32.

Big Ern.
July 22nd, 2012 at 12:16 PM
You have Scott, Ernie, Tiger, and Oosty in the top 5 among others (tied). That’s some of the best ball strikers which is what you want validated in an Open championship. Add in GMAC who is a high stakes player. Props to R&A and Lytham.

Nice putt by Els there for par. He’s had a great tourney, and just couldn’t buy a putt. Nice to see him rising to the top today.

Van de Velde thinks Scott will walk this in.

Ernie (finally) with the putt!

How many straight comments do I need for this to become the active thread again, or do I just wait for the playoff post???
Scott in trouble on 17, up 1.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Golf is boring.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Then entering this thread solely to post that comment was surely a great use of your time.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Big Ern baby! Adam Scott can go eat a dick.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Let’s go Big Ern. Need Scott to finish off the Van De Velde tribute on 18.
/team ban the long putter
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Adam Scott makes the putt if his putter is 12 feet long.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Scott absolutely dead in the bunker on 18. Will need up and down from the fairway (150 yds or so) just to stay in the playoff.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Wasn’t Ernie using one for a while? It’d be amazing for Els to win, basically making one putt the entire tourney, on the 72nd hole. What a turn of events… after his drive on 17, it looked like Scott was fine, no nerves.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
hope he blows it. i don’t have time to sit through a playoff.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Yeah – Ern used the belly putter for a while. He’s playing with the standard putter this week.
Seriously – R&A/USGA need to get on this shit and ban the longer putters for everything but the senior tours/events.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:16 PM
I hope he stiffs the approach

Hard to putt with both hands around your own throat.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:23 PM
5, 5, 5, 5. ouch!
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Wow. I turned it on like 45 minutes ago just as SVP was saying “looks like it’s just a matter of time for Scott”. Brutal.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
can we get a “guess the sanctions” post?
wondering what others are thinking as we get ready for tomorrow’s announcement.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
FUCK. I can’t believe I turned this shit off an hour ago. Wow. Can someone give me a quick rundown of how badly Scott choked this away?
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:35 PM
4 straight bogeys to end the day
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Something I was reading (I’ll see if I can find it) said that even though it most likely won’t be the “death penalty”, it could actually be worse.
My guess would be no bowls for an extended period of time (5+ years) and a MASSIVE reduction in scholarships (to the point that it would essentially cripple recruiting). I have no idea how many scholarships are granted for football, but let’s a reduction of at least half, if not more.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Oh, and eat a dick, Lester. Fucking home run on the first pitch he throws.
The Braves inquired about him. The Sox better fucking talk to them.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Here’s the link to the story that mentioned about the “death penalty” maybe being preferable.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:50 PM
definitely a combination of those two. i’m wondering if the NCAA would have the balls to say “no TV for 3-5 years” too.
i’m just wondering if i’m really going to say “WOW!” after the announcement. cause that’s the level of punishment it’s being reported as.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:54 PM
he and beckett keep getting shelled in the first inning. No movement on their pitches. Extremely predictable and infuriating
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Jays put on a clinic in that inning. I’ll be shocked if Lester makes it past the third.
July 22nd, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Didn’t think about the TV thing. Good point. I think if they reduce the amount of scholarships enough, that could give a “WOW!” factor, as that would have a huge long-term effect. PSU would (hopefully) be buried at the bottom of the Big 10 for a while.
July 22nd, 2012 at 2:09 PM
if it’s going to be something that’s “worse than the death penalty”, it would have to not only drop them to the bottom of the big 10, i’d think it would have to drop them to almost anonymity:
no tv for 3 years
no home games for 2 years
who’d want to play for them under this scenario?
