President Obama Has Two Different Handshakes, One for White Guy Assistant and Another for Kevin Durant
President Obama was at the US Men’s basketball Olympic warmup game against Brazil earlier this week, where he gave a pep talk in the locker room. He also met with the team and players and demonstrated his handshake versatility.
We’ve got the cordial handshake with the obligatory nod/one hand in pocket by the assistant. Then, we have the “my man” grab and shoulder bump with Kevin Durant.

Thats how black people shake hands.

he’s only half black

Why are you lashing out?

Politician’s mantra:
Say the things and do the things that please the people you are currently interacting with. Screw everyone else until it’s their turn.
All politicians suck. All.

Very presidential.

i’m not anti-obama at all. there’s just a lot wrong with this. first, you are the president, act like it. second, without knowing if he has met Durant before, this looks like “oooh it’s a black NBA star so i’m gonna act cool and greet him completely different from the coach standing next to him” to show how down I am.
I work in a pretty diverse setting and know a lot of black guys that get annoyed when people do this type of thing instead of just shaking their hand like a professional.

People will get riled up about anything.
Obama and most of these guys have played pickup before at the White House. I find nothing wrong with what he did. He didn’t give Anthony Davis one of those. Whoever he was friendly with got the half hug handshake thing and the others just a handshake. What’s wrong with that?

he’s only half black
Does that make him only half a president?

Maybe they get annoyed when you do it.

First, this was on reddit like 2 days ago. Second, he is nothing if not a president based in expediency, so of course he is going to present a certain face to a certain demographic.

Now I’m disappointed Monta Ellis wasn’t on this team.

Carl = Black
Lenny = White

I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that they do a five-step handshake or the Fresh Prince/Jazzy Jeff shake because they are black.

Aren’t you black Rollo, or is that not you in your avatar? Or is that not you in the avatar AND are you not black?
/I am of the vanilla variety
July 21st, 2012 at 4:58 PM
I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that Obama or anyone else is unprofessional because he gave a little dap hug, but that didn’t stop you from pulling a hamstring in making that leap.
July 21st, 2012 at 4:58 PM
My point of that is saying I don’t think race matters when it comes to a handshake. I’ve got black friends that do a regular shake, white friends that do the “black handshake” and vice versa. No biggie to me either way.

Exactly.
