Joe Paterno Statue Will Come Down This Weekend According to NFL Network’s Kimberly Jones[ UPDATE]
The Joe Paterno statue will fall. According to the NFL Network’s Kimberly Jones, the Joe Paterno statue will be taken down this weekend. It’s been less than a week since Penn State said they had no plans to take down the statue.
The artist who sculpted the statue of JoePa recently said that Penn State should wait before making a final decision on the fate of the statue.
“I think we should all wait on it. Put a cover on it,” Angelo Di Maria said. “Let’s see how everyone feels in six months … or a year.”
Somehow, I don’t think that would have been in the best interest of the statue. The few students who showed up to protect the statue from the people who paid for a banner to fly over campus threatening the statue’s safety must be crushed. If you’re curious why someone on the NFL beat would have this story first, Jones previously covered Penn State football for the Centre Daily Times.
Am told that Penn State plans to take down the Paterno statue this weekend.

[UPDATE: A Penn State board member says there has been no such vote about taking down the statue.]

I noticed that Michael Jackson’s image is on Pepsi cans these days. Where’s the outrage at Pepsi to remove his image from their product?
July 20th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
the outrage at pepsi is directed at pepsi’s actual product.

Fulham has a MJ statue outside their stadium.

Doubtful statue comes down this weekend, and doubtful it ever comes down.

Check out this quote from someone on a Scout.com Penn State forum “Fight On State”
Tear it down for God’s sake….. and then add the ‘Greatest College Football Coach Ever’ to Mount Rushmore. If any of you out there think Joe Paterno covered up child abuse knowingly then shame on you! Think about it.
Really???? wow.

Eh, it’s not like that statue has been there years and years (it wasn’t there during my undergrad years). As an alum, I’m fine with getting rid of it…I always felt a little creeped out by it anyway.
Wondering what they will do with the library that bears his name, however. That is a much bigger issue to me.

Because…why?

Works for me. Bit of closure, time to move on. Library stays. Its still Patee Library, the Paterno part is just the extension.

Ok, so we are gonna need a tank, rope and an American flag. Someone call Craig James.

The Inquirer had an interesting article on the whole statue thing.

SHUT IT DOWN
July 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Owner was good friends with him. Owner is also the father of the guy Princess Diana was fucking when she died. Interesting dude.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Not an alumn, but I don’t really have a problem with the library if it was a donation from the Paterno family. That’s a gift to benefit the university and it’s students

Oh yeah, something Fayed, right? I thought Fulham was partly owned by Paul McCartney.

TEAR DOWN THE LIBRARY

That statue it going on EBAY and the proceeds should go to implementation of a Pedastry Patrol whose cost overruns will later be blamed on illegal immigrants.

Glad to hear it. What are the chances there are a few idiot students who try to obstruct the workers tasked with removing the statue?

Wonder how Coop feels about this?

The Inquirer piece had an interesting take on the things bearing Paterno’s name:
I think that quote justifies keeping his name on the library. If anything, it’s a reminder of what happens when someone’s got that much power in any organization.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
i wanna buy it and then put it right down the hall from my bathroom with a diaper on it.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
It was a donation made by Joe & Sue Paterno.

And for the record before I forget, I would like to sincerely thank Nick Saban for pumping the breaks on the crazy train. He’s right, blowing shit up doesn’t serve any good. Let us earn trust back, let us make things right, and like it or not football is part of that process. You alright in my book.

Coworker talked to her brother who lives in Aurora.. apparantly about 10 years ago at that same theater, someone left Aids infected needles in some seats and people sat on them. Just burn that place down.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Surely not because of the Roundup pic.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
SHUT IT DOWN!
July 20th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
If anything, it’s a reminder of what happens when someone’s got that much power in any organization.
They didn’t name the Library extension after the Paterno’s because he was the football coach or his “power”. They did it because the lead fundraising and personally donated a lot of money. Just like every building on every college campus.
I don’t care about the statue, but I think this further shows the craven nature of the BoT if they do this less than a week after saying they want time to think through decisions like that.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
The vote is in, YES on 24!
July 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
CNN calls Aurora a “suburb”. It’s a lot rougher than outsiders realize. My daughter lived there for a while. You definitely need to watch your back there, day or night.
July 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
man, that was a poorly written comment. misspellings, poor grammar.
July 20th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
I know that, however, after this statue business is done, like it or not, next up for discussion will be what to do about the name on the library. I think it’s naive to think that people (i.e.–the BOT) won’t inquire about that.

I think Macca’s an Everton fan. That’s where he grew up.
Oh, and thank you, British Open, for making me late to work this morning. My boss was not happy.

Tear-Down-Paternomania! It’s coming to your town soon!
July 20th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Did you notice my tweet about that a couple days ago? It really makes me mad that Jackson gets a pass from so many people.
July 20th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
And the library? Gone… sealed off, brick-by-brick. We’ll have us a little book barbecue in the yard. They’ll see the flames for miles. We’ll dance around it like wild Injuns! You understand me? Catching my drift?… Or am I being obtuse?
July 20th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
So we get a post about the statue coming down because of a hot tip on twitter. an hour later, we get a report directly conflicting the twitter person. sounds about right.
