Dwight Howard Won’t Sign an Extension Anywhere, His Agent Says. So Nobody Will Trade For Him, Right?
Dwight Howard’s agent, attempting to stop the latest Howard-to-the-Lakers “report” before it spiraled out of control, told ESPN’s Ric Bucher:
“Dwight’s position has remained unchanged since the end of this past season,” said Dan Fegan of LaGardere Unlimited. “He fully intends to explore free agency at the end of next season, regardless of what team trades for him, including Brooklyn.”
Read: Howard could get traded anywhere, but he’s not signing an extension with anyone. He’s going to become a free agent next July. Excellent! No more silly rumors about Brooklyn (January 15th, now irrelevant!) or the Lakers, and there’s plenty of time for GMs to do what Atlanta’s Danny Ferry did – gut the roster so the opportunity of acquiring Howard presents itself. Oh, and here’s the extension side of things:
The longest Howard could sign an extension, according to ESPN Insider’s Larry Coon, would be two years if he signed with Orlando and was traded, or three years if he signed after being traded.
If he waits until his current deal expires, Howard would be eligible to sign a new five-year deal for as much as $108 million.
Chicago, are you paying attention? One has to wonder if perhaps Oklahoma City comes up short again next season, perhaps it ponders getting in the mix (Harden & Ibaka for Howard?). [Ed. Actually, with the new CBA rules, that may not work next summer.] I’d say the big winners right now are Atlanta and Houston, two teams with a) cap space next year and b) young talent or picks Orlando may want.
I’m sure the statement from Howard’s agent will completely put all the Dwight Howard trade rumors to a grinding halt. Yes, definitely.

Not a bad move. ORL still is better off trading him, but this drives down his value to the point where the team that gets him wont have to give up too much. I dont see how Orlando can keep him around the whole year.
July 20th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Doesn’t answer the big question: why the hell would I gut my team to sign him?
He wants to go to a place where he can contend AND get paid the most money AND he can have the run of the place. Championship contenders (or those teams close to it) have a structure in place and often lack the cap space to get him. Teams that gut themselves to land him aren’t going to be ready-made contenders. And no smart GM would be thinking “Gee, I’m sure I’M the one to make Howard behave” after all his shit in Orlando.

listen, dwight…where do you want to go? we will get you there any way we can…it’s possible. but you need to make up your fucking mind instead of acting like a spoiled fucking toddler, ok?

is this shit worse than lebron’s…yes or no?
July 20th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
They way he’s acting right now, this petulant fucking asshole is worse than LBJ. At least LBJ raised about $6 million for a charity from his stupid Decision show.
July 20th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Without a fucking doubt.
July 20th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
I just this to be over. People need to mercilessly boo this buffoon at every arena next season, including his home arena. He’s a fucking clown.
None of this would be happening if he had just opted to be a FA like a sane fucking person would in that situation. What a piece of shit. Orlando is fucking themselves over by not trading for him ASAP. The longer he festers, the bigger the damper this all puts on their season.
The Lakers aren’t going to wait forever – they have Bynum and though he’s not Dwight, he’s still pretty fucking good. Fuck this clown and his goofy ass smile. He’s a people pleaser, not a competitor.
July 20th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
So you remove any dwindling trade options you had left, meaning you’re going to spend the year on a .500 team getting booed at home. Excellent work.
And this is way worse than LeBron. For all the hype, LeBron really didn’t drive most of it. Dwight is doing everything he can to get people to pay attention.
July 20th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
i mean, obviously they’re trying…dwight’s making it difficult as fuck for em tho. tho i heard the lakers would still pull the trigger even if dwight didn’t extend.

Much worse than Lebron. Lebron made one big stupid Decision. Dwight has been a petulant child for, like, two years now.
That aside, isn’t Dallas positioning itself to again be a contender for a major FA next offseason?
July 20th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Also Lebron is one of the best to play the game, Dwight is a bitch.

The way Dwight’s acting, I’d call somebody a fucking idiot for bringing him to a midnight screening of a movie.

They’ve armed themselves, they know how to ride and now they can talk. Colbert was right: bears are the #1 threat America faces.

Lebron was at least swift and merciless with it. He did what he had to do and left the fans scrambling to piece it together. This idiot has made it a fucking saga.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
You guys are forgetting one very significant thing. All it takes is one barbara walteresque soft light interview with ESPN to change the public perception. Once this whole debacle is done, he will sit down with Stephen A. Smiff where softballs will be tossed to him. He can talk in a hushed tone about how he “regrets” how things went down in Orlando. Considering we have a large section of the population always looking to provide backlash to the backlash, he’ll hook line and sinker a large group of people to his side.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
I don’t think an interview would really help here. Everybody that actually follows basketball is sick of this clown. Casual fans don’t really care about him either way, he’s not as important as Lebron.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Actually I dont think that many offers are coming in. Now, Dwight is an extreme bitch. Undeniable. I think a lot of the traction has been ORL putting shit out there to improve the market.
ORL made the error of trying to get too much and not they aint got shit. To think they weren’t in for a total rebuild was asinine.

Probably true.
Also, I’m not sure not signing an extension should preclude a team for dealing for him. Trading for him now gives the team that is getting him a full year to sell Howard (through his reps) on their merits of their particular franchise. The notion that he won’t sign an extension also gives the team trying to acquire him added leverage during negotiation.
I admit this is not likely, but it’s certainly possible under the right circumstances.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
I think Howard has added “coach killer” to his resume, whereas I don’t think Lebron has fielded that particular criticism.
July 20th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
I could see why they would want a super haul considering the Suns were able to flip their 38 year old PG that they didn’t want back for two firsts and two seconds. If I was Orlando I would wait until you get closer to the deadline now. Some team will think they have a chance at a title with the addition of Dwight and pony up.

The sports reporter who got killed last night could have also almost been killed in a shooting that happened in a Toronto mall last summer. Crazy how she wrote about it here, and then ended up dying in another random unpredictable act of murder.

This is not news at all. There was no way he was signing the extension no matter where he got traded to. He’d be giving up way too much money.
