College Football Top 25 for 2012: Virginia Tech Hokies, 24th
Virginia Tech Hokies (2011: 11-3 (7-2), Sugar Bowl: Lost to Michigan 23-20)
Four-Year Trend: 2008 (10-4), 2009 (10-3), 2010 (11-3), 2011 (11-3)
Notable Player: QB Logan Thomas. He has a big-time arm and at an athletic 6’6″ 260 lbs is a threat in the run game. He showed brilliant flashes as a sophomore in 2011. As a junior, he will have to make plays. The Hokies lose all four guards and tackles, two starting wide receivers and first-round running back David Wilson from last year’s team.
Top Newcomers: Joel Caleb (S), J.C. Coleman (RB), Deon Clarke (LB), Ken Ekanem (DE), Jarontay Jones (DE)
Circle This Game: Virginia Tech at Clemson [Oct. 20] Virginia Tech lost twice in the ACC last season, both times to Clemson. The Hokies will want revenge and a strong start to the three-game stretch that will define their season.
Why We Like Them: Consistency. Frank Beamer’s Hokies are coming off their eighth-straight 10-win season and their 13th in the last 17 years. This is rooted in defense. Bud Foster has been an assistant for Beamer since 1987* and defensive coordinator since 1995. He routinely churns out excellent defenses and returns nine starters. The Hokies struggled at times last year, but, healthy and focused, they were their normal aggressive selves against Michigan in the Sugar Bowl.
Best-Case Scenario: The Hokies beat Georgia Tech in the opener, ride their soft schedule into late October and win two out of three in their tough three-game stretch – at Clemson, at Miami and Florida State at home – to finish 11-1 and play for the ACC Title.
Worst-Case Scenario: The defense is not elite. The offense sputters due to attrition. The Hokies proceed decently against a soft opening schedule but fade down the stretch to finish 7-5.
Lean and Mean: Frank Beamer has lost 32 pounds since spring practice ended. He started a workout regimin and dropped to a starch and sugar free 2,000 calorie per day diet. He’s down to his playing weight from the 1960s. Hope those half-zip Nike jackets come in “smedium.”

This is an 11 win team that loses in a bowl game. Wait, that happens every year.
I would have guessed top 15.

I love lamp.

God, I hope we somehow beat the Hokies AT Lane Stadium. That would be so deliciously satisfying.

This site’s JMU bias coming through once again. Yellow journalism.

Their game last year was such a disaster.

Video at the bottom was a sad reminder I won’t be seeing anymore Jacory floaty balls anymore.

As Lisk explained earlier. Our rankings are on team strength not how we think they will do with their schedule. VaTech (a) loses a ton of offense (b) finished 27th in SRS last year and (c) the best team they beat in 2011 was Miami.
July 19th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Yes, yes it was. (Sigh.)
In other news, with ‘Cuse and Pitt coming into the conference, what will the shakeup be with the divisions? Will they just stick ‘Cuse in the Atlantic and Pitt in the Coastal? I tried to work up a North/South set up but having four NC teams in the middle of the conference geographically makes that really hard to do.

A Korean?
Vietnamese.
July 19th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
And that’s why they win 10 games every year. That vaunted VTech offense.
July 19th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
While that’s pretty bad, it’s still not as bad as Liverpool’s new third jersey. Tribal tattoo inspired.
July 19th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
hey mole…you know what was a great idea? getting out of work early to watch the british open*.
*coupled with series of suggested eyebrow raises and “take the 2nd word in ‘ping pong’ and instead of a p put a b and then put rips at the end and yea that’s what im getting at”
July 19th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
anyone see the new VT helmet? cant remember who they are wearing it against.
Afghanistan?
July 19th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
You really should put that disclaimer at the top of every team.
Still disagree though as (a) the ACC is garbage and VT has a good mobile QB and comptent running game (b) too many stats (c) didn’t they beat everyone else on the schedule, save Clemson?
July 19th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
So…what are the odds that Logan Thomas goes #1 if VT makes a BCS bowl?
July 19th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Wow, possibilities are endless.

I’m very jealous. The seven dollars in my bank account is keeping me from doing the same until tomorrow.
But I’ve got tickets to the Pittsburgh Blues Festival this weekend and Canned Heat is headlining Saturday night, so yeah, going to be a good good time.
July 19th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
… the kid was Korean, how did that fly over heads like so many stray bullets?
July 19th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Spencer, do you work third shift? I’m trying to think of how getting out early from work would be beneficial when coverage started at 4:30 am ET this morning. Rather, going to work late would seem to be the better option.
July 19th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I even missed it, which is sad since I know someone who was actually wounded that horrible, horrible day.
July 19th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Still can’t believe they lost to Michigan despite out gaining them 2 to 1. Has to be one of the most overrated programs of the past decade.
/SPECIAL TEAMS, YEEEEEAH!

dvr bro. i got like eight hours of coverage to catch up on.

so dies sergio…it’s all good tho, like 28 of my 46 favorite golfers are within five strokes it seems.
July 19th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Only they’ve kind of abandoned that philosopy a bit. The game has changed. Teams are using a three man shield to prevent the blocked punt at all costs. Also, roughing the kicker is more commonly called.

i thought we had a moratorium that frank beamer was to be referred to only as “ol’ meltyface?”
