British Open 2012: Can Lee Westwood, Luke Donald or Sergio Garcia Make It 10 Straight First Time Major Winners?
The British Open at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s tees off Thursday morning across the Pond. That course has always favored creative shot makers, with Seve Ballesteros winning two of his Opens there, and Gary Player also winning there. In what seems like an eternity ago, David Duval won the last Open Championship played at Royal Lytham back in 2001 when he was on top of the golf world.
Meanwhile, we’ve now seen nine straight first time Major winners. There’s a pretty good chance that it will get to 10. According to the odds released by RJ Bell of pre game.com, half of the top ten favorites for The Open have never won a Major. Tiger Woods is the favorite at 8:1, ahead of Rory McIlroy. Among those who have never won, Lee Westwood (12:1), Luke Donald (15:1), Justin Rose (25:1), Sergio Garcia (30:1), and Francesco Molinari (30:1) are given the best odds.
I’ll be boring and predict that Tiger Woods wins the British Open, thus setting off a whole slew of Tiger Woods articles next week. Among those looking for their first, I’ll take Luke Donald as the one who will extend it to ten straight first-timers.

So does this and another post (JMac asking for suggestions for his golf pool) mean that there will be at least one post during the last 2 days?

You are lucky there was any post about this. I recommend you find a golf blog.

really tough finishing stretch here. string of first time winners karma, course that’ll require power steering with the irons and being seve’s playground…there’s a lotta reasons to like sergio here.

sergio’s best shot at a major is a british because he’s a decent putter on slow greens. im not necessarily surprised he’s one of the favorites but id probably take lee westwood for all the same reasons before him just because he’s finished in the top 10 in 8 of the past 14 majors and has come so close it’s mindblowing he doesn’t actually have one. he’s in just ridiculous form.

Nope, not at all. Just hopeful after the continued neglect and finally now a couple of golf posts. Posted under another name mainly on NBA posts before.

You need to be a phenomenal iron player on a stage like this. Shape shots either way. Get lucky with the bounces.

No pun intended but holy shit! Lol! I didn’t even read any of that article, just saw the picture. I had to go back and read it. That’s fucking gross.

If somebody fed that to me and told me afterwards what it was, to say there would be murder involved would be an accurate statement.

i shot 82 on saturday and was +2 thru 13 before hitting a drive by a tree and greedily trying to hit thru a tiny ass window, hit a tree flush and shot back 80 yards. took a triple, followed up with a double and limped in.
80 on sunday at a donald ross course. was -2 on the par 5′s and birdied 18 with a huge drive, cool ass 3/4 60* to 15-20 feet and buried the putt.
GETTING THERE.

I did like 3 on US Open weekend. I set our weekend schedules so I would be working on both shifts this weekend, after being on vacation last. Probably won’t have a daily summary post, but yes, I’ll be watching and will post something if there is notable shot, someone missing cut or taking lead, etc.

good article.
never heard of this book before, but i had been approaching practice and playing the same way. nice to have a little validation to the process.

I need to start playing more. My brother used to play in college and always told me if I played more I could be pretty good, seeing how well I did for someone that rarely plays. Shit just frustrates the hell out of me.
July 18th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
it’s tough to learn, no doubt, but once you get a few keys down and repeat them enough to trust they’ll work, it’s outrageously rewarding.
July 18th, 2012 at 9:56 PM
This is actually a decent Zach course. He played well last week (but he always plays well close to home). His game is irons and putters… If the weather is good, I like his chances. But, he is not a creator, so if the weather comes hard, forget this pick!

Maybe this is why my game never improves but there’s a par 3 course around here I like going to. I look at it like this. No matter how bad you fuck up at a par 3 course, how bad did you really fuck up?
July 18th, 2012 at 10:17 PM
oh, when i first started? i REALLY fucked up this par 3 course on the reg.
July 18th, 2012 at 10:25 PM
I just mean it’s not like some of the huge par 5′s my brother will take me to that just erode any confidence I have in my golf game. It’s not going to take me 7 or 8 shots to

saw em and love the look of the 64′s…bet they get slaughtered by the mp59′s in sales tho.
reminds me of the mp62′s which i fuckin loved.

62′s were smokin hot. Saw the Anser driver in-hand’s as well and not that impressed with it. I’m sure it will be a fine product, and i do like the flat black crown, but other than that i find it lacking.

golf porn for a few of you, my first set of good clubs were MP-14 back in the day. played MP-62 in college till they discontinued them (early 2003-ish). Been an AP2 guy the last few years, I like them but they are hell to break in.

Not very likely but an Adam Scott-Tiger group would be fun.

Is this where we come to talk about different brands of basketballs and basketball shoes?
July 19th, 2012 at 8:17 AM
Sure what are your game shoes.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:25 AM
Sure is, glad you could make it! What kind of shoes do you play with? Me, I personally like game improvement shoes because my game is inconsistent. Hopefully when I get the kinks worked out of my shot I can transition over to the players shoes. They don’t offer as much forgiveness on bad shots, but when you do shoot that perfect shot, man do they feel great! I also like to play with a 4 piece ball. More forgiving, and I can usually shoot longer with it. However, its forgiving enough around the rim where I don’t mind the amount of spin it creates when it leaves my hand.

A 64 and a 65? I thought john deere was last week
July 19th, 2012 at 8:43 AM
Els may shoot 67…arent open courses supposed to be difficult? I see weather is calm tho
July 19th, 2012 at 8:43 AM
A 64 and a 65? I thought john deere was last week
The Open is cool. They just set the course up and let the scores be whatever they will be. But the same set-up can yield a 64 today and an 84 tomorrow if the weather gets bad.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
The course has no defense today.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Even after all of these years, nothing is better to ball in than a pair of Air Force Ones

Script do courses in sketchy weather areas factor weather into their par rating?
July 19th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
now, i dont wanna toot my own horn or anything, but i believe i was touting paul lawrie as a dark horse.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Zach Johnson is playing pretty solid right now.
Don’t you guys worry, this course won’t go away quietly. It’s the first day, and a 3rd of the field hasn’t even teed off yet. Pace yourselves, fellas.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:48 AM
my uncle is a total hippie who owns a restaurant/catering place and was catering an event at this urban fashion place that lebron was hosting way back when. they paid the staff well and gave them all a couple pairs of air force ones when they were the shit. hippie uncle hated shoes like that, but wore em for work because they were so comfortable.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:52 AM
glad I didn’t lay any money on Rose.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Wind picks up in the pm
July 19th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Par is totally up to the course owner or whomever is setting up the course for touney play.
Course rating is supposedly average over numerous rounds of play in allweather, so weather is a factor here.
Slope rating is done by the USGA.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Spence same course question to you…#66

I am a bit unfamilar with the rating process. A course that is inflexible to weather conditions would be shit though. A true course’s measure should be valid in all conditions. Links design is a bit unique though.
Also, courses built <1950's will always be askew. Building a course with each hole to "par" is a modern idea. Therefore, you can get an old course with a 465 yard par 4 and a 300 yard par 4. The first architects didn't worry that a hole would yield birdie vast sums while another would produce bogies. They'd route holes based on the land and old ball flight ideas. Years later, with course maintenance costs and design costs skyrocketing, that old idea seems great and I'd love to see more of it.
July 19th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
Lawrie has been playing top 25 golf in the world for a bit and he’s a Scot. I like that he re-built his game from the depths and is a world class golfer, probably with a better game than when he won his first major. Somebody to root for….
July 19th, 2012 at 8:59 AM
An important thing to remember about par ratings – they’re just ratings. Theres a reason the engrave the total stroke count on the trophy and not the par standing you shot. I forget which Masters it was (Zach in 2007?), but the winning total was +1. That was the first time in like 50 some years that the winner shot over par. Not sure where I am going with this, but wait until these early guys go out in the afternoon tomorrow.
July 19th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
Zach Johnson’s Masters win was one of the most compelling ever. It was the worst weather at Augusta I’ve seen in my lifetime.
I just hope the weather is reasonably impactful for both sides of the draw. I hate to see half the field get blinded out off the bat.
