Maybe he’s got a really expensive house? And I’m not sure exactly how much money Zuck’s got “on hand.” Isn’t most of his money tied up in investments and business?

buffs: agree or disagree with this piece on millennials and old movies?
So because millenials (woof, term) like the immediacy of social media to discuss entertainment, they cannot appreciate old movies? That is a statement on the people not the films. Also, those people are young. Who expects young people to get into old movies? Old songs? Old books? People don’t get into old things. Never have. Never will. Seems like that writer is trying to say old movies are dead. Pretty dumb idea.

The mortgage makes sense. The rate will probably be below inflation so he is getting paid to borrow money. If the house goes up in value, he still receives all the upside while only putting (probably) 20-25% down and the millions he didn’t put into the home by being a cash buyer he can use to put in a different asset class that he thinks may return more than a home.

Roeth – I read that article last weekend on CNN. while it is very one-sided (in her favor), her superiors from previous jobs and current job are on record as saying she’s great at her jobs. your link seems a little like students doing what they do best during college: railing against “the man”.

But would you say among the best of 2011?
My movie watching is not as up-to-date as it was pre-parenthood, but the 2011 class was weak sauce. Drive had a good vibe and I couldn’t find a movie to compare it to. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy & The Hunter are the two I really want to see still, and a few others I’d like to see. We just activated a Netflix gift so we have some movies available to us the next three months I hope to keep getting some more in.

I find this line of thinking amusingly misguided. of course, it’s conventional wisdom that if you can get a loan for a lower rate than you can securely invest the same amount of money, then you’re stupid to not take it. but that rule applies to us minions trying to climb up the wealth ladder. the fallacy in applying this thinking to a guy like Zuckerberg is forgetting the greatest luxury of being that rich: you don’t have to deal with the minutea bullshit of taking a mortgage out so you can own a home and then balance that low rate out by investing the same amount of money to earn a few percentage points in interest. dude can buy the home with cash and not have to pay some money manager to write his monthly mortgage checks and keep track of whether his offsetting investment that’s only going to add somewhere around an extra 0.01% (estimate!) to his net worth is still making more than that adjustable rate mortgage he took out just because he got a low rate.

It’s a good thing he isn’t a member of the media because he would have written a scathing piece discussing the bad run he’s had recently. His site is a mess. He erroneously claimed Mark Cuban deleted a tweet. He attribtued Morey’s cap-genius to being desperate for Lin, despite him using the exact same maneuver 16 days earlier. miz – its about liquidity. note that this is a refinance; not a new origination. he may very well need to do this because of the cash he has (or doesn’t have) on hand. Moreover, it’s not like his money manager is going to get rich off of handling an auto-draft loan payment. He literally will do nothing with this, and the bank will send Zuckerberg his 1099INT form around tax time and he will then give it to his army of CPA’s.

The fetishizing of home ownership after WWII is one of the worst things to ever happen to this country and is a direct cause of the economic crisis we’re in right now. not really fired up about it. just opinionated on that line of thinking about taking out loans when you have the means to not have to take them out. I didn’t click the link, but I’m guessing the house in question is $7million, no? pretending it is, let’s run the numbers: $7 million at 1% over 30 years is an approximately $22,500/month mortgage payment (assuming no down payment and nor mortgage insurance since he’s “low risk”). over the life of the loan, he pays out slightly more than $1.1 million in interest. if he invests the same $7 million at 3% (we’ll go conservative), then he’ll have $17 million after 30 years. so, over 30 years, he made monthly mortgage payments and had to monitor the adjusting mortgage rate against his investment to make sure it never gets over 3% cause then he would be needlessly losing money. congratulations, Mark, you’ve made almost $9 million at best. compared to your net worth, the amount of money you just made is equivalent percentage-wise to what a normal person makes by leaving money in a checking account.
the point is this guy likely isn’t worried about penching pennies. of course, he can do whatever the hell he wants with his money…it’s his money. but why subject himself to the headache of a mortgage when he can literally (not literally) dig the the money to pay off the full principle out of his couch cushions?

re comments 1, 37, and 74: ultimately, this is just a personal opinion. I think the greatest luxury of wealth is not having to deal with the bullshit headache of trying to make a couple of percentage points of money by participating in an exercise like balancing a mortgage rate against a potential low-risk investment. it’s GREAT advice for the middle class and lower upper class. but, to me, at some point you’ve made enough money to not have to think about that anymore.
July 17th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Agreed. The downside to this is when we have government telling us that everyone should own homes and forces banks to make it worth their while. Some people just don’t need to own their home, just like some people don’t need to go college, or need to own a car, etc etc. However, if you can reasonably afford to do those things then knock yourself out. Just don’t get overextended to the point where the bank recoups their losses by passing those costs on to the other members/customers of the bank.
July 17th, 2012 at 9:46 AM

I think the key term there is “government mandated”. Eventually, the technological advances in dish detergent and light bulbs become the norm. But when government mandates something before the price levels off or before a business is in a position to spend capital on it, it’s more harm than good. A clean planet will not matter much to most people if unemployment stays where it is or God forbid, rises.

Exactly. The mere fact that we have to “trick” the system speaks volumes to the lack of concern for the readers’ ability to interact with each other.

Spencer – after I posted that i realized it wasn’t an OBO, so I probably can’t talk the guy down. I don’t mind the “made for” shafts out there, because after my fitting it was pretty obvious the benefits of a boutique shaft (or at least an enthusiast model) would show little benefit to me (i.e. gotta fix my form first, then worry about the minutiae of shaft specs).

some made for shafts are fine…and id include the made for kai’li in there too.
youd always get SOME benefit from a shaft with a bend profile that fits your swing…thing is, sometimes a made for will fit fine and there are a lot of cheaper options with the same bend profile as a premium shaft.

Fuck this moron, six of dumb fucks writing about benign accepted cultural practices through the pretense of “facebook changed everything.”
Also recycling movies has everything to do with movie economics and nothing to do with narcissism.
What made me laugh about that piece is that he name checks Scorcese and Coppola, forgetting that those two were part of a whole movement in the early 70s that rejected traditional Hollywood for a harder and grittier take on movies — which many of the critics and filmmakers of the time disliked.

Tested Vokeys, Callaways and Nikes. Hard to get an actual feel for them in a simulator, but I’ve carried a Cleveland CG15 as my GW for about a year and a half and love the way I can control it. Really liked the Vokeys, but the 588s and my experience with my CG15 won out. Had 6 GIRs yesterday which is probably a record for me. Too bad I couldn’t hit a putt to save my life.

yea, familiarity is a big key. i used to have this nike sv 56* that was my first real wedge that i hit great and never really adjusted too well to the vokeys. i think there’s some credence to a golfer finding a certain brand fits their game better…if youre confident, it’ll probably perform.

Well TBL feigned not knowing the problem last thursday. we bitched and moaned about it for over an hour, and then he tepidly asks what the problem is. We tell him, he says he’ll get on it, and here it is 5 days later and the same problems exist, without so much as a peep from him on why thats the case (nor responding to our legitimate trolling of him to “fix his site”). Also, remember a few months back when he mentioned the idea of overhauling the comment section? I don’t remember the exact details (or if they were ever given out, which I doubt they would be), but it was alluded to that there would be some changes coming to them.
I’m not saying TBL/USA Today can’t do whatever they want to. It’s just sad that its not been addressed/fixed or even owned up to (assuming the change was calculated and not merely a mistake).
