Banner Flying Over the Penn State Campus: “Take Down the Statue or We Will”
All, Penn State Scandal July 17th. 2012, 11:35am
Penn State says it has no plans to take down the Joe Paterno statue. Wonder if this banner will get the school to change its mind? I bet Bobby Bowden was involved in this stunt! Your call, Penn State.

they should just take the head. more symbolic than just taking down the statue and erasing it from existence.
maybe replace the head with that of “pedo bear”, to really make this something we can all learn from.

Just cover the statue in children’s tighty-whiteys.

After reading Deadspin’s most recent post and then reading this post I can only come to one conclusion…
Somebody will die.
/Still not as bad as dog fighting.

Don’t negotiate with terrorists. That banner looks poorly made.

As somebody else said…the naming of the library is a bigger issue.
I’d assume it’s changing before the start of the new school year.

Sad

Handcuff a statue of Sandusky in bath towel to the wrist of JoPa statue
July 17th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
That would be me.
But I suppose that all the outrage centering on a statue and not a building that Paterno helped raise 13 million to create and has done a shitload of good in terms of PSU’s academic reputation could HARDLY be seen as a metaphor for people not looking into the real issues because they’re distracted by a, literal, figurehead.
Not at all.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Can’t we just put a bronze sign around his neck that reads “Diddler Supporter”? That should cover all the bases.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
knew you’d love it, Spencer. Sidenote: Entering British Open pool. Need your input. Not necessarily at the top – but in the middle. Gimmie some middle-tier names who will do well. We may need to take this to gchat.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
As far as I’m concerned, the statues future should be up to PSU, BOT, Alumni etc. Maybe they could auction it off!
July 17th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Mr. Gorbacev, tear down that statue.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
TBL – sending you a link in gchat you may also find relevant
Spencer – gchat name? Mine (and subsequent email) is “benjaminahudson”

Paterno was a guy who did not put individual names on the back of jerseys. Why would he/should he want a statue of himself if no one person is bigger than the team in the first place?
At the end of the day, it’s just a statue.

Meanwhile, all the statues of confederate generals, guys who fought for the right to own slaves and KKK members, sit comfortably. Knowing they aint ever coming down
July 17th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
i don’t know why, but for some reason the thought of the statue being torn down reminded me of the Statue Park/Graveyard in N64′s GoldenEye
July 17th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
cant gchat at work.
middle tier is always tough to predict here. depending on your definition of middle tier, guys id look at are either strong iron players with a low-ish flight or experience euro tour guys.
thomas bjorn, john senden, jonathan byrd, robert rock and paul lawrie.
like francesco molinari and mcdowell too.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Replace the Paterno statue with a Kerry Collins falling down drunk statue.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Mind. Blown.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Nick Saban’s statue would step over Joe Pa’s torn down statue.
/This is why you don’t build a statue of someone when they’re alive
//Saban is in NAMBLA
July 17th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Replace the statue with a usable outdoor shower. With an endless supply of soap.
July 17th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Reminds me of Saddam….Hussein.
I think on balance we can all agree though that Paterno is a greater monster than Saddam was.

Definitely, this.

My suggestion was to melt it down into thousands of little bronze cubes to be sold to raise money. But that would still immortalize him and his relationship to the whole awful event.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
nice, i like your hyperbole.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
That banner looks poorly made.
I’m not pilot, but if I had to choose between sign craftsmanship and expensive plane fuel, I’m going with the shitty quality sign.
/Gravity is a bitch.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Both statues will be pulled down in carefully orchestrated PR moves.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I like Miguel Angel Jiminez…he always seems to do fairly well at the Open and he fits middle tier.
I think Paul Lawrie gets a Top 10 (he is my darkhorse winner) this week.
I also like Davis Love 3 for some reason. He fits the trend of an older golfer popping up on the board at the Open.

So, has our crack investigative journalism staff here at TBL determined who the “we” in the banner is???
July 17th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
i think they should take the dead whale approach.
fill it with too much dynamite and take out all the people protesting it being torn down while making a great youtube video.
this will also satisfy those who don’t want the statue torn down as shrapnel will be deposited all over the PSU campus so JoePA will always be there.

July 17th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Replace it with a Notre Dame-style Grotto and call it something beautiful, like Ironia Eminata.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
biggest fallacy in golf…jiminez hasn’t top 10′d at the open since 2001. coincidentally enough, we’re back at lytham this year…so maybe it’s a decent pic.
he’ll always be remembered as the guy who won van de velde’s open, but he’s been VERY solid the past two years.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
it’ll learn ‘em.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:12 PM

WE ARE…NOT PENN STATE!!!
July 17th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
MAJ has a couple of Top 15′s and Top 30′s over the last few years at the Open. nothing stellar, but not too shabby.
For some reason I got Adam Scott winning this thing…continues the trend of 1st time major winners.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Someone with enough money to afford flying that banner, which likely rules out anyone living in most of the counties surrounding State College.

nogaf since its the south.

not shabby, no…just doesn’t live up to his reputation.
i could see it…he’s such a good ballstriker.
in my pick em league, i took tiger. like sergio, kuchar, rickie fowler and, surprisingly enough, phil. if phil can flight the ball like he did at pebble this year, watch out.

Are all statues around the world of guys with clean records? I’m not saying he’s not guilty and his legacy isn’t tarnished. But why tear down the statue. It causes emotion – for some people its good emotion, for some people it’s anger. That’s what a statue (aka… art) should do. Right?
July 17th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
i dont know and i don’t care…all i know is if wojtek the soldier bear doesn’t have a fucking statue, HEADS WILL ROLL.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
My opinion was to take it down… but Dan Patrick (yesterday’s show) made a great case to keep it up.
July 17th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Jiminez has been in awful form lately.

It amuses me to no end that every once in a while, the weed-loving residents of Arcata, Calif., rouse themselves to demand that the statue of the imperialist William McKinley be torn down in nearby McKinleyville.
July 17th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Different times, though parts of that war are are still being fought (see, NAACP boycotting South Carolina). Not all statues need to be of saints, but turning a blind eye to kiddie diddling has been frowned upon since ancient greece.
Plus, you need the passage of time to evaulate a man’s life.
