it’s also that the truth is not easy to explain…sure, we could portray an objective view of afghanistan but would be accused of claiming superiority over them. nevermind that they still stone women falsely accused of adultery by a male who was guilty of abusing her…they have feelings too.

The Kingdom. I seem to remember TBL raving about it.

Syrianna, The Kingdom, Hurt Locker, Green Zone, Body of Lies, none of them particularly successful in release.

Part of it the complexities of the issues. Part of it is that we’re just too damn close to the event. Movies like The Hurt Locker work because they’re small parts of a bigger event.

Look at it this way: it took at least 10-15 years before we started getting the good-to-great WW2 movies (Patton, Bridge on the River Kwai, Tora! Tora! Tora!, Midway, The Dirty Dozen, etc). It took another 10-15 years to get the good-to-great Vietnam War movies (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Full Metal Jacket).

So wait till about 2027 or so and we’ll get the great movies from this time period.

Kaiser, This Week in God was one of the best segments.
Colbert getting his own show ruined everything.

That and Jon has made some horrendous hires when it comes to correspondents. Mandvi, Munn, Cenac, Madrigal etc. Just cringe-worthy. Either their delivery is off, or they are simply not funny. John Oliver was the last good hire.

good movie as a companion piece to the book, definitely recommend both for anyone interested.

Speaking of OT, I’ve been watching a lot of old Daily Show clips lately. So many awesome field reports from great correspondents like Colbert, Carrell, and Helms. Even guys like Bakkedahl had lot of funny reports. And they weren’t all of political variety. It’s one thing I miss with new direction that Daily Show took once the guys like Carrell and Colbert left the show. It’s become 100% politics related. They’ve pushed correspondents to the back burner and made it mostly about Jon’s monologue and interviews. It’s not a strong criticism as I still watch the show. But I miss the old Daily Show where they mixed in heavy political stuff with silly things like the sketches below.
