Mark Cuban vs. Bill Simmons Over the Ancient, Lottery-Bound Mavericks

Bill Simmons on the Mavericks acquiring Elton Brand and Chris Kaman to replace … well, Dallas is essentially starting over: “I wasn’t crazy about Elton Brand and Chris Kaman playing together in 2006 when they were still good.”
Mark Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks owner, responded thusly: “They (sic) next smart personnel comment you mae (sic) will be your first.” [Cuban has since deleted the tweet. Ed. Actually, he has not. You just can't see them if you have twitter to set "no replies."]
Why so defensive Mark? Your franchise has been gutted, and you replaced old guys like Kidd and Terry with … slightly younger (but still old) guys like Brand and Kaman. Dallas is headed to the 2013 lottery.

Kaman is better than anything they had at center last year.
July 16th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
The rare PF/C backcourt combination, bold move.
That picture of Cuban is horrifying.

Brand (33) and Kaman (30) both came on 1-year deals whereas Kidd (39) and Terry (34) were both signed to 3-year deals. They made the right call to try and chase DWill and Dwight…when that failed it seems to me they did a decent job of patching together a pretty competitive team (also adding Collison) without handcuffing them long-term.

Can Bobby V. just shut the fuck up please. Team takes 2 of 3 and discusses the Youk bullshit. Why? Why? WHY!? Its over with.

Obviously Deron choosing Brooklyn makes the offseason a relative failure for Dallas, but since getting that bad news, they’ve had a great offseason.
They’ll make the playoffs. It’s not like Kidd gave them anything last year. He only played 48 games. Collison is a HUGE upgrade.
Kudos on the server upgrade. Really paying off.
July 16th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Not to mention he’s on the last year of a rookie contract and they added Jones who, again, is in the last year of a contract.

CJ, Bobby V blames Youk
July 16th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
fuck Youk.
July 16th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Why is that a fact? They had a championship team and let go of their second best player to chase FAs. I completely get it when the Rockets want to chase after Dwight, because what else do they have to lose except a .500 record and a low lottery pick. But DAL had a hell of a lot to lose with a team coming off of a championship and proof that they could beat their best rivals in a 7 game series, and then lost by giving up.

is cubes like jerrah, meddling with personnel, or does he just sign the checks and do curls?
July 16th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
He still thinks he works for ESPN. Unbelievable douchebag.
July 16th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Agreed, that Mavericks title team is probably one of the weakest title winning teams ever. Seems so far away at this point.
July 16th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Why so defensive Mark? everything ok at home?
fixed.

Yep, it’s still not old.
July 16th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Since Billy Wagner is retired, can we re-nickname the server “Frank Frank”?
July 16th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
And the Phoenix Rockets into the playoffs!
July 16th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
i think they’re both douchebags
July 16th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Possibly. Some team has to be the weakest. The weakest team still won a title.

chicago is in the middle of old home week. youk to beantown, ozzie to chicago
look up today’s joe cowley article on ozzie if you care. there was a palm bean post story involving onie guillen recently as well. idiocy knows no borders
July 16th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Yeah but I mean did anyone really think they were primed to genuinely contend for the title the next year? They got theirs at the end of the window.

I want Pedroia to blow him up after the season. His affecction for attention is beyond tiring.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
No, I didn’t expect them to contend, especially after Tyson got such a large FA offer. Didn’t expect them to try to match.
Anyway, some teams win a title then contend for a few years after before finally breaking down (Celtics). Some teams contend for a few years, then win a title, before finally breaking down. Mavs had a nice run from ’03-’11. Now they’re trying to remain respectable while they re-tool for the next cycle.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
For a moment, I was able to italicize and block quote. But, back to mid-90′s looking site. Anyone else have that problem?
July 16th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Dallas wasn’t great last year, not sure why losing any of the players they let go is that big of a deal:
Out: Kidd, Terry, Mahinmi, Haywood
In: Collison, Kaman, Brand, Dahntay Jones
Terry’s obvoiusly the best of that bunch, but he is 34. You’d probably say that the next three best players are all coming in (Collison, Kaman and Brand).
They’re also linked to OJ Mayo? If they could pull that off, they’d have:
PG: Collison
SG: Mayo (or another FA, have to think they aren’t done yet)
SF: Marion
PF Nowitzki
C: Kaman
Bench: Beuabois, Jones, Brand, Cunningham, Brandan Wright.
Not title contenders, but better than last year’s team IMO. (And younger.) Definitely better than the fucking Hornets.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Yeah it makes sense to do what they’re doing at this point.
Anyone who gives a three year deal to Kidd is an idi…. OOPS.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
dirk will age well…if they get howard, that’d be a good fit. they could be back fairly quickly.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Why can’t I post comments?
July 16th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Of course that one works.
Anyway, Rusty essentially echoed what I’ve been trying to post. Signing Chandler to 4/47 would have been insane and just postponed any re-tooling that would have been necessary at some point anyway.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Also, jthussler nailed it. They really are improved over last year and with loads of financial flexibility going forward.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
I’ll echo what a few others have said…Dallas didn’t have a great offseason…but they improved. They are making the playoffs next year, period. This sudden need to refer to them as lottery-bound in every single reference is baseless. Dirk alone can carry that team to 45 wins.
Title contender? Absolutely not. 6th, 7th, or 8th in the West? Absolute lock.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Keep in mind, since my quick scanning didn’t say anything about it… Kaman is getting $8M (1 yr) and Brand is getting $2.1. I’m not a big fan of either right now, but especially Brand at $2.1 seems cheap.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
This right here. Probably the most important thing.
Mayo would be a good signing for them. He’s a pretty undervalued player right now. Surprised he hasn’t drawn as much interest.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Keeping in mind they acquired Brand (2.1) and Collison (2.3) for the about same cost as what they S&T’d Mahinmi (4×4).
July 16th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I don’t know how undervalued he is. He is looking for money north of 10 million. I think the Suns probably offered him something similar to Dragic.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Which Collison?
July 16th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
I was convinced that he was going to end up in Indy, and he still might. But the silly Gerald Green signing may preclude it.
Opinions on Pacers’ offseason so far? I’ve seen everything from “love it, A+” to “F”. I think it’s a solid B. Collison & Augustin are a wash, they added depth on the frontline, and they opened up playing time for Stephenson in a “it’s now or never for you, bro” move.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Out: Kidd (39), Terry (34), Mahinmi (25), Haywood (32) = 32.5 average
In: Collison (24), Kaman (30), Brand (33), Dahntay Jones (31) = 29.5 average
So they get a collective 12 years younger. Don’t let facts get in the way of your narrative, Jason.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
I’m sorry but is there a mandate that the Mavs be eternal championship-contenders? They had their run and now they’re on the downswing and will start the process.
I mean, it’s not like they’re the Lakers…or the Knicks.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
That’s my question… if he’s as good as he was in NO, he’s a steal. Otherwise, maybe not.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
I would presume you’re not taking the draft into consideration.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
If they tried to keep the championship team together as long as possible, in 2013/14 they would have:
Dirk (35): 22M (expiring)
Haywood (33): 9M (w/ 2 more years)
Terry (35): 5M (w/ 1 more year)
Kidd (40): 3M (w/ 1 more year)
Barea (29): 4.7M (w/ 1 more year)
Chandler (30): 14M (w/ 1 more year)
Marion (35): 9M
Butler (33): 8M
That’s almost 75M in 2013/14 season (not including re-signing Roddy and others) and one old-ass team. As it stands, they have Dirk and Marion, both expiring.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Plumlee made 1st team All-Summer League!!!
/rolls eyes
/but still…he played very well
July 16th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
It’s a no-brainer.
Kidd and Mahinmi for $7+ million combined or Brand and Collison for a little over $4 million. The latter tandem is both better and cheaper. Stupid to think otherwise.
July 16th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I mean I’m a Duke fan, lived in Indianapolis at one point, am white, and I still think that’s one of the worst first round picks ever.
