Bobby Valentine Can’t Quit Trolling Kevin Youkilis
Bobby Valentine could have been diplomatic, gracious and sane, but then he would not be Bobby Valentine. He saw the potential for a conflict with Kevin Youkilis and just could not resist. The Red Sox manager blamed Youkilis for “making a big issue” about him questioning his commitment to the media rather than his face.
“I wasn’t here last year. There was no friction in spring training. So I think that’s a joke. But I’ll take all that. I think the comment that I made early, he made a big issue out of and I don’t think he ever wanted to get over it.”
Valentine provided support for the notion, never confirmed, that Youkilis was the snitch for the “beer and fried chicken” story.
“Yeah, I was aware of that,” Valentine said. “I was a newcomer. I inherited that situation, didn’t cause it.”
He also attributed Youkilis’ success since leaving Boston to him not being fully on board when he was playing for the Red Sox.
“I haven’t seen him play. But he’s gotten a lot of hits,” Valentine said. “He’s played a lot of games. Seems like he’s healthier. … I’m not surprised. Matter of fact, [hitting coach Dave Magadan] said no doubt that if he went somewhere else he would play better.”
Most in-game baseball decisions are simple questions of probability. The Red Sox manager’s primary job is to keep the players happy and productive and to minimize distractions. Valentine seems to be the primary source of both the clubhouse discord and the distraction.

Do you realize how hard it would be in the NL though!? The double-switch!!

Completely agree… to paraphrase @ChrisMellen: that’s why they played so hard down the stretch for beloved manager Terry Francona last year and won the World Series.
I’m not going to defend BobbyV, but they are over .500 with a team that is basically the PawSox, and DH and Catcher the only stable positions all year. Maybe the lazy rhetoric on the manager needs to go away, and the players making $200 million should hit and pitch the ball.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Leave it to Duffy to find the lazy/easy narrative and drive it into the ground. Invariably I’m completely bored and annoyed with a Red Sox topic by the time Huff descends to write about it.
/no usage or grammar errors though, so that’s a nice improvement

From your own link:
He got one thing right.

I can see he’s already preparing his defense for his eventual departure. ‘It was already shitty when I got there, not my fault!’

OT/
Early review of TDKR – NO SPOILER
The real world threats of terrorism, political anarchy and economic instability make deep incursions into the cinematic comic book domain in The Dark Knight Rises. Big-time Hollywood filmmaking at its most massively accomplished, this last installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy makes everything in the rival Marvel universe look thoroughly silly and childish. Entirely enveloping and at times unnerving in a relevant way one would never have imagined, as a cohesive whole this ranks as the best of Nolan’s trio, even if it lacks — how could it not? — an element as unique as Heath Ledger’s immortal turn in The Dark Knight. It’s a blockbuster by any standard.

and the players primary job is to earn their paychecks by giving it 100%. if a player needs his manager to keep him happy and productive enough to do his job, that’s not a good player to have in the clubhouse.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Still pissed the Tribe didn’t ante up the reasonable asking price of shit MLB player and decent prospect for Youk. Fucking jerk offs.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
The review has some plot points, the quote above does not.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Bobby handled the situation poorly. He’s a manager that felt the need to establish his presence the day he walked in the room and there are those hesitant to change within the room that want no part of that. He’s not the only reason the team is playing bad baseball though. They’d be a better team if everyone on it did their job. Especially the guys throwing the ball to the other team.
Every pitcher who has ever thrown at the professional level?
July 16th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Should spend more time blaming Theo for all the albatross contracts on the roster…perhaps if they keep hovering around .500 the target will shift
July 16th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
but how is it as a heist film?
July 16th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
The best part of Youk’s whining when Valentine called him out is that it’s not that much different than what Youk did to Ellsbury a couple of years ago. He questioned Ellsbury desire to be with the team and whether he was even injured. It’s pretty clear that Youk wasn’t injured with the Sox except for his pride.

If they’d just nutted up for Josh Willingham, it would be moot. Then they could;ve saved the prospects.
This ticks me off, we got outbid by the Twins. A direct competitor of similar market size.

Would have been a better deal than they got from the White Sox…that was two shit players for Youk and cash, dude’s helped the lineup gel nicely and at worst it will cost them $1 to buy him out next season so in all his expense to them will be around $3M
The Summer of Kenny continues

does Batman die though?
July 16th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
SC has a pretty good take. He’s had some shitty times this year, like everyone else. Also had a few good moves that paid off, and saw through the ridiculous Bard thing. I just wouldn’t expect Duffy to realize or care.
On the other hand… why is everything with the Red Sox national news? Why does everyone care? Does anyone not a Red Sox fan actually give a shit either way?
July 16th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
He’s only really responsible for Crawford (which is a bad deal) and Beckett. Don’t think many of us would have seen Josh Beckett turning into a 4th starter in the American League at age 32 but here we are. If Cherington isn’t shopping that name, he should be wearing a diaper and a cone on his head.
Buchholz could be a shitty deal in a couple of years if he continues to allow a baserunner and a half an inning the next few years. Bobby Jenks can be thrown in I suppose but that one they bought out.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
/looks over at lard ass Lackey
//sighs
July 16th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
John Lackey is sad that no one remembers him anymore
July 16th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
He’s been decent a lot of times this year, and there’s no replacement. I don’t think there’s much of a market for overpaid former top-of-the-rotation starters. If he’s a 4th that’s fine, but it’s idiotic to think you could get anything back for him, and even more idiotic to think he is at all replaceable with that the Red Sox have now, or could trade him for.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Oh, and Matsuzaka. But unless you’re the Mariners, chances are you’ve gambled and lost on a Japanese player in the last 15 years as a MLB general manager.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
does Batman die though?
The review says it’s Nolan’s homage to Hitchcock and Batman is killed off in the first 10 minutes.
July 16th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
It was a great deal. Will always be a great deal. You can’t judge everything in retrospect, you don’t have that knowledge going in. Beckett was questionable, but in Buch they locked up a young starter with plus stuff long-term. I mean he broke his fucking back, give him a few months to get into the swing of things again.
/looked good last start
July 16th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
what were they going to do, let Beckett walk?
he’s going to have a good 2013. he alternates every year.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
In the National League there is. Pick up some of that ticket and I bet the Sox could get a decent return from a team like Los Angeles. I think Beckett is another player that could see a revival if shipped out of Boston.
Sometimes you just have to accept the seller mindset. Especially when there’s a big market for starting pitching this deadline. If Ryan Dempster is yielding a top 100 prospect return, Josh Beckett (who is still under control for 2 more years) certainly can too.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Didn’t they almost deal Chris Perez for Trumbo before the season started? Or was that just a rumor?
July 16th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Beckett is still a decent pitcher. He’s not old-Beckett, but he’s not John Lackey, and settled in really nicely yesterday (he tends to do that). Not sure why everyone wants him run out of town, when he’s often been the best pitcher in that rotation this year. So he’s overpaid… he’s not a liability. Crawford and Lackey are (mostly because of the roster crunch, and blocking competent-healthy players)
July 16th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Probably not. But this isn’t an assault on the Red Sox as a franchise. It’s an objective look at how the player is performing compared to the amount he’s being compensated for. That’s all. Beckett’s deal right now looks pretty crappy.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
it’s revealed at the end that Batman was actually a crossdressing lunatic who murdered his mother and the first two movies were a dream.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
SC sounds convinced that the Sox can’t get a wild card berth. I don’t think they should be sellers at this point.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Random one for you gents (and 2? ladies) – anyone ever have a research firm contact you to do consulting work on an hourly fee basis? No idea if it’s legit or not and I’m worried it’s a scam of some kind.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Buchholz’s deal will be a great deal if by 2016 and 2017 he’s got #2 starter numbers because that’s when those very affordable team options kick in. That’s 4 and 5 years from now so it’s entirely possibly. It’s why I put the qualifier “could” in front of it being a shitty deal.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Doubtful, what do they have to give, Federowicz back?
I would like them to be selective sellers, and yes Beckett (not a ridiculous contract, decent pitcher) is one of those guys. But they have to sell while contending, and the Red Sox never get those good prospects back. I don’t know if it’s because they only trade guys they have to, so there is no market (see: Youkilis, Kevin and Ramirez, Manny). I just don’t think there’s a market for Beckett in a sure-thing prospect. The worst thing is that the Red Sox really need to trade for guys who don’t have to be on the 40 man roster. November is going to hit them really hard this year otherwise (Carpenter back soon, Lackey off DL, etc).
July 16th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
If you can’t win the division, I don’t think you should be a buyer. The Red Sox are highly unlikely win the American League East. Buying should be reserved for teams that aren’t looking at a 1 game shot to get a 5 game series to advance to a 7 game series at which point they are still a 7 game series away from winning a championship.
If the Red Sox could find someone to take $31.5M in commitments in 2013 and 2014 for a decent return, I think they should do that.

July 16th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
I disagree. He’s not in the top 5 for underperformers, even relative to contract. Lackey, CC, Ellsbury DiceK Bailey all injured. Bard fell off a cliff. Youkilis was so bad they went to Middlebrooks. Adrian has no power. Beckett isn’t an ace, but he’s a reliable innings-eater at this point, I’ll take it.

Oil and gas production in West Texas?
July 16th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Didn’t they almost deal Chris Perez for Trumbo before the season started? Or was that just a rumor?
I never heard that. I think they tried to get that old guy from the Angels on the cheap. The guy I’d deal is Chiss. First, I think he’s flawed. 2nd, the end game could be keeping him and Asdrubal at 3B/SS.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Let’s brainstorm then. Who are the top starting pitchers that are available and where would we put their likelihood in being dealt. Here’s a few names to start with:
Hamels, Greinke, Garza, Dempster, Shields, W. Rodriguez.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
I wouldn’t bet that Beckett will get claimed on waivers this year. I’m not sure Beckett and $10M (meaning he’s a normally-paid #3 starter) gets you a good prospect.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
That’s true. Which would allow Boston to wait up to an additional month to possibly move him. I’m just saying that Cherington should shop his name around. There’s plenty of teams with budget looking for starting pitching. When you trade for prospects, it’s never a sure thing. The Sox would still be relieving themselves of a fairly large financial commitment to a player that may not be an integral part to them winning in the future.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Have I mentioned I think the additional wildcard is fucking stupid? Because the additional wildcard is fucking stupid.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Then why wouldn’t they claim him? The only reason to not claim a player is because you think you might get stuck with him and his salary. If a team wouldn’t pay the salary for free why would they trade a prospect for it? And if Sox had to add $$$ in, then what is the point… just keep your guy instead of paying as much to replace him.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Then trade him before the deadline like I suggested. The Red Sox are fringe contenders for the 2012 World Series. The front office would be wise to start accepting that reality and build for the future. If I was them, I’d trade Josh Beckett to relieve some financial stress with the the chance that I could get a prospect or two of value in return.
I understand that many Red Sox fans do not agree with this and I’m fine with that.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Completely agree. Pissed he broke his wrist. I think they really could have used him to garner some interest in trades.
And I was the one drumming the Trumbo for Perez deal. It was out there, but not from really credible sources. Looks silly now, but the Angels were a mess in the back of the pen until Frieri showed up to the save their season.
July 16th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
