Saw a comment about this on another site that was pretty funny. The guy said the statue was so life-like, because it just stood there silent.

I just interpret the Freeh report a little differently and place less blame (not no blame) on Paterno than the others.

Spanier has the most culpability in my eyes – the others are in a 3-way tie for 2nd.

As for the library – name it after his wife or something. She doesn’t appear to have any culpability in this so it can still ‘honor’ the good the Paterno family did for Penn State without smacking some in the face by having JOE up there.

It is “just” the Paterno Library now (always has been). “Joe” doesn’t appear on the building.

Over the next several years, etc., wait for everything to come out. If, at the end of the day, Paterno is as culpable as the Freeh report claims – well, the statue has already been removed. Further, at that point if some nut really wants it why not auction it off with the proceeds going to the Sandusky victims or some sort of sexual abuse charity? Or, just to present the flip side, if some other evidence comes out that may(highly, highly, highly, highly unlikely) exonerate Paterno the statue would still exist (not melted down, etc.) and can always be put back.

Paterno was by far the most important figure in Penn State history for the last 50 years, you can’t just pretend he never existed. As to the trustee’s quote above, the statue can represent both the good and bad that he did. Put a plaque on it explaining his contributions and his failings. Removing the halo from the mural is a no-brainer though.
