The dichotomy between the main page pic and the pic on this page is staggering.
Oh, sports? Yeah they are boring right now.

And I’m not talking just that picture either. Shes had a man face since 7th Heaven
July 11th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
kaiser – i stopped raising hell about the after-the-jump-pic a long time ago. Its obvious the trick is to get you to click the link, and we all know the next picture will be some Golden Girls impersonation.
mike – the funnest thing to do is to ask a liberal just what, exactly, the upper earners should pay. They never give you a serious example, because doing so would put a finite amount on their redistribution plans. I tried posting a retort to Mike’s stale crusty talking point but WP keeps eating it. Bottom line, in 2009 Americans paid their lowest tax rates in 30 years. Republicans need to stop whining about taxes. Right now, their nominee is an absurdly wealthy silver spoon brat whose signature accomplishments firing middle class workers and paying almost nothing in taxes. The fact that this race is a toss up is one of the stronger indictments you could ever level against our political process.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Thats what I’m talking about!!
July 11th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Interesting article, Mike. I like numbers and facts.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
yea…i mean, it looks fine and all but i have a bad feeling about it. im sure it’ll perform well, but it won’t perform as well as a g20 or i20. the color code is their adjustability…they didn’t need to let consumers adjust the club to fit worse.
those new wedges looked sick too.

I *think* it is supposed to be satirical. However, being from New England and having no understanding of life in a large Southern university, I really thought she was being serious. Until she threw the Instagram thing in there. That’s about when I started to think it was a poor attempt at satire.

well, there have been studies to look into the optimal top marginal tax rate. that is, the top rate that people will pay without starting to work less. studies have shown that it is somewhere between 70-80%.

Rob Gronkowski is such a fantastic representation of “Polish bro from Buffalo”.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
This. Close the loopholes, increase rates across the board, punish corporations who flee overseas to avoid taxes, and decrease spending anywhere and everywhere you can. State and local governments are the ones who really need to adopt this policy, because they are really hurting right now.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
i consider myself a liberal, and if you asked me that hypothetical, id suggest bumping up the estate tax to over 50% on anything over the current exemption. fuck heirs.
id also suggest taxing religious orgs, but that’s the point where my campaign would go down in smoke.

college kid’s column: “how to find the perfect husband in college”
I actually think it’s a great article. By not breaking the wall and letting the satire become too obvious it makes is fantastic. Papers used to do more of this but people aren’t smart enough to wade through the morass.
Also, time to update the staff photo. Woof.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
jessica biel is one of the top 4 hottest girls on the planet, but that pic sucks. i hate the bangs trend. it makes everyone look like an ugly piece of shit.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
Well Ping has always done exceedingly well with the color code fit system, but once you get the clubs it’s hard account for issues that may develop later. Kind of a weak argument, but you know the enthusiast player going to want to tinker instead of getting a new driver entirely. I actually prefer the “get fit right the first time” approach, but the discernible benefits of the R11s are not lost on me.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:05 AM

i traded my g15s in a few months ago for some mizunos. i had the g15s for about 10 months. i liked them at first, but they are just too chunky for my taste. and i found the distance control to be bad.

Can’t speak for the irons, but I do have a G15 driver with an Aldila Serrano stiff shaft and a G15 3 wood, and I love them.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
Hit the G15′s along with a number of other products recently, including R11′s, AP1′s and AP2′s, JPX800′s, G20′s, and a few others. Really liked the R11′s so I went with them, but they all hit well. If I can offer any advice, it’s to go get properly fitted by a FITTER, not just some guy who looks at swing speed and orders some stuff.

July 11th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
July 11th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
oh, i hear that side of the argument completely. it’s easier to tinker and adjust, sure, but how do you know if you’re making consistent contact if the clubface angle and weight distribution are being shifted around.
no doubt they’re convenient to fit and you’re not losing THAT much performance by dist weight away from the head, but whatevs…who am i to say anything.

MP – The AP lines are all-around winners. I really hope they get the time they deserve from prospective purchasers. Titleist has always done better jobs with its players equipment, but they are on to something with the AP1′s and 2′s.
spencer – i agree. for the average player, they are going to tinker with the club to address the undesireable results as opposed to getting to the root of the problem and fixing the swing. Having just gone through fitting, I really liked the 910, the Rocketballz, and the G20. Just give me a decent club that is forgiving on mis-hits and fit the shit out of my swing to optimize distance and reduce spin to a manageable level.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
history’s greatest monster…id consider looking at the nike vr pro combo. fairly easy to find used and feel fantastic. it’s a set that’d last you longer than g15′s…the better you get, the more the offset and thick topline on the g15′s is going to drive you batty.

they are making me rethink my jpx800 purchase, which is saying something because i love those irons so much.
basically, i am a golf equipment slut and am always looking on new clubs to help my game. i am at this crappy point where game improvement irons arent really helping me anymore, but i am unsure if i am good enough for forged, like ap2s or mp 59s.

I had an idea about the Bourne movies. There was a minor stir when Damon opted out of the franchise and then they just moved ahead with Renner. But I had a thought, what if that was a smokescreen and Damon was somehow filmed and showed up at the end to put it motion the next film where it’s Jason Bourne and Renner’s Aaron Cross going off on people?

July 11th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
You’re essentially talking about “economic communism” here.
no, you’re not. you’re talking about designing a tax system that maximizes revenue, so that we can pay for our society. roads, schools, police, and yes, things like healthcare and social security. People want all of those things.

Damon only opted out of this film, he has expressed interest in being in subsequent ones.
I would not be surprised if he showed up at the end in a cameo since the trailers indicate this happens almost at the exact same time as the previous Bourne movie.

MP – The AP2′s are harrrrrrrrrrrrd to beat. They felt outstanding, but i haven’t played much in the last 5-6 years, so I am putting off players irons until i get back to a consistent handicap and game that fits them again.
Spencer – the MP59′s are an awesome club. Of all the clubs we used to sell, the MP line would have customers buying those sets 2 or 3 times over.

njensen…i haven’t seen you swing, not sure what you shoot or how often you play or any of that, but id buy a used set in good condition in a heartbeat for cheaper than the burners. it’s not that they’re bad or anything, you just gotta know what gaps to fill and they have strong lofts where you’d be better off going with weaker lofted irons and replacing the longs with hybrids. you’d need a gap wedge…it creates gaps where you don’t want em in your bag.
re: flex…not going to get technical, but the faster you swing, the stiffer flex you want. if you swing slower and smoother, go with regular…faster and more aggresive, go with stiff.
but get fitted no matter what.

Rich people do not create jobs
Not true! They create:
- valets for their Mercedes, Lexus and Range Rovers
- bartenders and waiters/waitresses for their clubs and restaurants
- maids to take clean up after them
- gardeners to tend to their yards
- au-pairs (NOTE: ONLY hot European 20 year-olds allowed)
See! Jobs created! (NOTE: These jobs are minimum-wage and do not have health/retirement benefits)

fixed for my gaming vice, but the point is spot-on. I feel it’s one of the only sports where you can actually see your progression happen. Sure, you get faster, shoot the ball better, catch and throw better, etc in other sports, but golf is an immediate and noticeable skills game.
jensen – gosh, not sure how to help there. hit them if you can, buy one club on ebay of each if you can’t?

I’m always amazed at how people fall for the Democrats class warfare tactics and all this fairness nonsense. Who own companies and employ the middle class? Rich people. What happens when you raise taxes on the rich? Do they just shrug their shoulders and say Oh well? No they downsize and lay people off or put off plans of expanding the business. Result- you end up screwing the very middle class you claim to care about. But the Democrats are smart enough to know how jealous, petty and stupid people are and they keep falling for it.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
I’m more talking about the laughable trope that is the rich don’t pay their “fair share”. I mean, it’s the bedrock argument used by the most powerful person in the world to push his class warfare rhetoric into dividing the country. And it’s complete & utter bullshit.
Group A: 1% of the country that pays 22% of federal taxes.
Group B: 20% of the country that pays 3/10th of a single percent of federal taxes.
And the way it plays out, with the President of the United States, and in the media, is that it’s Group B that is tired and angry that Group A isn’t doing “enough”.
I’m just asking someone to make sense of that canard.

I will never, never, never understand why the Republicans insist on redistributing wealth upward at the expense of virtually everyone else in the country.
To the point about the wealthy paying 70% of taxes, I reply with this. It basically says that – brace yourselves here – poor people don’t pay taxes because they don’t make enough money. Not rocket science.
And for some historical perspective, I offer this. The rich are doing just fine and by historical standards, fantastic even.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
hit the whole 710 line and put the 712 ap2 and cb thru their paces…only hit the mb 7i. the ap2′s felt fantastic but i felt they performed b+ compared to the nike pro combo a and i liked the cb’s, but titleist irons have always felt “hard” to me, even on pure contact. less so in the cb’s, but def in the mb’s.
it’s all subjective tho…ive seen a lot of meh reviews re: the 909 line of woods and hybrids, but that line is my favorite ive ever played. the hybrid and driver are phenomenal. huge fan of titleist woods, wedges, putters and balls…but irons i give the edge to mizuno and nike.

to push his class warfare rhetoric into dividing the country
I’m politically open-minded but the GOP declared war on the middle class here in the Midwest. Ohio/Wisc are two places to start. This nation has been politically polarized long before this and will remain so long after.
The last election, every city went for the Dems and ever urban area went GOP. College towns in rutal areas when Dem. It is simply a fight for those suburban areas that tread between.
Everything else is a money grab. Stop with this “he divided the nation” bullshit. You’re better than that.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
this is my dream set.
here’s the way i see it though…say you get a brand new set of titleist mb’s or nike vr blades or whatever. you get project x’s and multicompounds and you’re looking at $1,100 for a set of irons thrown together with relatively lax factory tolerances meaning you neec the swingweight/loft/lie adjusted for an additional expense.
you get miura’s, it’s COMPLETELY fit and customized for you to EXACT SPECIFIC tolerances from the highest grade steel made by a master craftsman for $1,200.
if you’re dropping that kind of money on new irons, miura’s are a very sound investment.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:11 AM

the president’s argument and your argument lack the one thing that would make it worth debating: context.
of course the bottom 20% don’t pay as much in taxes, they have almost no income to tax.
I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that you’re just egging on the debate for fun and not just repeating GOP talking points b/c you really believe this nonsense.

/dangles bag of cash in front of Miura

July 11th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
It’s funny that the richest are always screaming bloody murder about welfare, medicare, etc. Yet they are the ones who are bigger aggreate users of government services.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
Who own companies and employ the middle class? Rich people.
And here I thought the middle class employed themselves by starting their own small businesses.
I’m just asking someone to make sense of that canard.
That 20% that pays 3/10th of a single-percent is the people below the poverty line which, in today’s America, can include the fabled “welfare moms with the 8-kids by 6 different baby daddies” as well as the “drain on our society illegal immigrants” but it can also include retired US veterans, senior citizens, people with physical/mental health conditions, recently-graduated students without jobs, people whose businesses and jobs went under, etc.
There has never nor will there ever be a fair and equal distribution between the rich and the poor. The poor will always outnumber the rich — that’s why they’re the rich.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
This is literally untrue.
So the average .01% make 23 million. The average 90% make 29,000.
23 million guy pays a Romney-esque 15% at 3.4 million.
29,000 at 15% pays $4350
It takes 781 average people to pay the rich guys share. Way more if the 23 million was paying the proper rate of 35%.
Rich people are paying more because they are really really fucking rich. Middle class are playing less because their wages have been stagnant since the mofucing 70′s while CEO pay has risen 400%.
/probably got the math wrong

Deshi! Deshi! Basara Basara!!
It’s funny that the richest are always screaming bloody murder about welfare, medicare, etc. Yet they are the ones who are bigger aggreate users of government services.
That’s because when a rich guy gets a stadium built for him for free, it’s not “welfare.”
The NFL has gotten lots and lots of government subsidy throughout its history. No one blames them for being a “welfare” industry.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
i also love the quaid/ogrady vid because it’s a great example of the difference between a good amateur and a pro. at the top (0:07) they’re in identical spots, but when they transition into the ball, ogrady stays under the plane, while you can see quaid start the “over the top” move.
it’s subtle, but when you compare them side to side, even quaid’s miniscule over the top is evident next to ogrady’s perfect transition.
interesting.

I’m not asking why the rich are paying more.
I’m asking why the argument from POTUS and the DNC is that they aren’t paying their “fair share”.
In other words, since the word has been devalued of all meaning: what is fair?
July 11th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
So I guess the three small businesses I have worked for who did EXACTLY that are full of shit? got it.
Sorry to hear that dude, but you got laid off because enough people weren’t buying what they were selling. tax rates sensitivity in that case is a sympton, not the disease.
Jist for those not reading link, the top earners could withstand a 83% tax rate.
that is an 83% top marginal tax rate, not 83% overall.

July 11th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
I’m just asking someone to make sense of that canard.
I linked to it. A top rate of anything less than 83% (I’ve heard numbers slightly lower as well, between 70-80%) does not cause people to work less because it isn’t worth it.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Mike, are you actually asking why politicians are behaving like politicians? Is this some sort of riddle?
July 11th, 2012 at 10:26 AM

I’m asking why the argument from POTUS and the DNC is that they aren’t paying their “fair share”.
In other words, since the word has been devalued of all meaning: what is fair?
i’m guessing that the rich couldn;t be rich unless they took advantage of our laws as well as depended on the less wealthy to buy things. if you are dependent on comsumers, most of whom are not as wealthy as you, for your wealth, helping them is ‘fair’

July 11th, 2012 at 10:27 AM

Fair is the amount for the country to pay for everything it wants and needs, but not so much that it causes people to decide to work (and produce) less utility than they currently do.

golf. it is one of the few things that is 100% legitimately, unprejudicedly fair.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
My thoughts exactly.
Politicians are going to be politicians. The GOP says it wants to “repeal and replace” the health care law but they actually have no replacement plan (and haven’t offered one since 2009 in the midst of the health care debate). Why? Because keeping the health care debate out front is good for getting conservatives riled up, which is good for the GOP. That’s politics.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
why do you keep arguing the wealthy pay 70% and the bottom 20% pay less than 1% of tax rates? it’s an argument that panders to the base of the party you follow, that’s why the president makes his argument when his opponent has off shore bank accounts, worked at Bain capital firing people (yes, and hiring people, i know), and has hundreds of millions of dollars to his name.
what is fair? in terms of taxes? in terms of society? employment? the american dream?

Just as an example, you can be assured that in his second term Obama will retain or bring in new people from the same Wall Street, Goldman Sachs, NYSE crowd.
The rich will be just fine. No need to worry.

Enough so as to protect their own self interest. The economy as is stands now in untenable with shrinking middle class and growing consumer debt. Cause of this is stagnate wages and the evaporation/lack of a social safety net (heath care debt, student debt). Historically 75 to 80 was the best for GDP but I would start at 39.6 with higher capital gains tax and less loopholes. A strong class of consumers is in everyone’s interest.
It should be fluid, lowering taxes in times prosperity and raising taxes during recessions for stimulus programs.

No. That is the maximum amount you have calculated that allows you to steal from high-earning people in order to fund your utopian welfare state.
You have all failed the supposed riddle. Fair is an equal federal income tax hit across every single person in the country. Say, 20%. Across the board. Everyone.
Period.

In baseball a sacrifice doesn’t even count against your average. That’s why baseball’s better than life – it’s fair.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
That’s actually the opposite of what should be done, but your intention is good. In times of prosperity, you raise marginal tax rates and can lower your spending since demand from the other three parts of GDP will take over. In recession, you lower taxes and raise spending to help make up for lack of demand from consumer, investment and net exports.

Ah, shit! What happens now?
July 11th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
20% of 20,000 = 4,000
20% of 2 million = 400k.
The 16,000 the 20k worker has left will leave them in a much worse position than the $1.6 million the 2 million worker earns. Flat taxes will never work and can’t. This libertarian utopia that you and others want will never work.

The funny thing is, by today’s GOP standards, Mike NYC would be considered an intellectual conservative.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Way too easy to cheat first of all and secondly you would have so much crumbling infrastructure the whole country would look like Detroit. 90% of the country would pay $1400 more in taxes and buy less whereby the 01% can’t buy enough to churn output. Mass unemployment. Eventually a shiftless layabout such as myself would scale the walls of your palatial estate and decapitate you.

Mike, I’m going to let you behind the curtain a little bit. I’m not doing this to brag. I’m the 1%. My fiancee and I earn well over $300K/year. That isn’t “fuck you” money, but by any measure makes me very well off. I work in finance. I’m asking/begging that I get taxed more.
I don’t view it as stealing from me. It is an investment. If there is better infrastructure, I think the cost of goods and services will be less. If we teach children better, there will be more smart kids innovating and producing and growing the economy. I think this is in my best interest.

July 11th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
mike, you didn’t like my ‘what’s fair’ answer? let me riddle you:
could rich people be rich without the non-rich? if so, then yes, they should hoard all their wealth. if they rely on the vast majority to buy things, use their services, then paying more taxes seems like the price to pay if nothing else to help the poor/middle class to not go under and continue to be able to pay for things/services
please respond, someone, before i think i have the answer to everything.

General Tagge: Any attack made by the Rebels against this station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they’ve obtained. This station is now the ultimate power in the universe.
Stewie (Darth Vader): That is fantastic. Terrific work. So no weaknesses at all?
General Tagge: N… no.
Stewie (Darth Vader): You, uh, you hesitated there. Is there something I should know?
General Tagge: No, it’s virtually indestructible, like 99.99%.
Stewie (Darth Vader): Uh, okay, wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t ask what’s the 0.01?
General Tagge: Well, I mean, there’s this little hole. It was kind of an aesthetic choice by the architect. And if you shoot a laser into this hole, the station blows up.
Stewie (Darth Vader): Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! That sounds like a pretty big design flaw, then.
General Tagge: No, no, the hole’s only two meters across.
Mayor Adam West (Grand Moff Tarkin): Well, that’s no bigger than a womp rat.
General Tagge: Exactly. And even to get within range of it, you have to skim along this whole trench. It’s not a big deal.
Stewie (Darth Vader): Can’t we board it up or, you know, put some plywood over it or something?
General Tagge: Well, that would look terrible. I mean, we gotta think about resale.
Stewie (Darth Vader): Resale? What are you talking about? …..
All right, so were’ going to plug up that hole?
Imperial Officer: Yeah, we can get it done tomorrow if price is no object.
Stewie (Darth Vader): Ehhhh…
Imperial Officer: We’ll get estimates.
Stewie (Darth Vader): Get estimates, yeah, yeah.
