Jim Harbaugh Called Randy Moss the San Francisco 49ers’ Best Receiver
Rich Gannon was on Sirius XM Radio yesterday talking about the 49ers and Jim Harbaugh. Among the nuggets was that Harbaugh praised Randy Moss’ work throughout the offseason, and called him “our best receiver right now.”
We have no reason to doubt Harbaugh on this, who also probably referred Alex Smith as “the best quarterback in the league” and someone he never tried to replace. That is high praise, though, considering the team already has Michael Crabtree, who stretched the field last year with 12.1 yards per reception. The team also added Mario Manningham from the Giants and rookie A.J. Jenkins in the first round of the draft.
Randy Moss, of course, signed a one-year deal with the 49ers this offseason, trying to come back after retiring a year ago. He is a sure Hall of Famer and it would be laughable not to say he was the clear best receiver in that group a couple of years ago. Last offseason, I wrote how Moss could be a very short term gamble, but not anyone to count on long term. Of the best receivers through age 33, only Jerry Rice had a 1,000 yard season after age 35. Terrell Owens, James Lofton, and Henry Ellard all did it for the last time at the same age Randy is this year. Here’s a list of everyone that had a thousand yard receiving season at age 35 or older; Moss will try to become the 12th.
Moss is two years removed from playing, and three years removed from a good season. He’s a mercurial talent, so nothing would surprise me, but I’ll need to see it to believe it in 2012. He still might be the best receiver in San Francisco, but will he be even close to the old Randy Moss?

Still really glad Harbaugh didn’t take the Michigan job.

Amen. Although the hatred would be through the roof. But, to be honest, Meathead is doing a nice job resurrecting what RichRod tore down.
The rivalry is alive and well.

Unless he did some sort of Jerry Rice offseason training regimen during his time away from the game, I’m going to say he’s going just be part of the mix in their receiving corps, but not the dynamic Randy Moss everyone remembers from the Vikings days.

When is the ASG ratings post? Waiting for Yarkwor.. er, the Tour de France post?

At the time I was pretty disappointed, but in retrospect I think any success he had at Michigan would have had everyone speculating and wondering when he was going to bolt for an NFL job.

i don’t think you can even expect Moss from 2008 and 2009.
i also don’t think that if you want a productive Moss you don’t say “he’s maybe third best we have”, you say “he’s the best receiver on the team” and keep him happy. so i take this with a grain of salt.

I might take a flyer late on Moss in fantasy. Can’t hurt.

Did Harbaugh go to the Bobby Valentine school of coaching? This is great for Crabtree.

Objection. Hearsay.

It surprises me just how much media members can’t handle Jim Harbaugh pumping up his players. First the Crabtree hands thing, the Alex Smith Pro Bowl stuff earlier…what exactly are coaches supposed to say?

From what I can gather, the pride of East Ban, West By God Virginia, has to date not tried to run over any security officers or bitch-slapped any airline attendants while on active duty with the Niners. That essentially makes him Citizen of the Year.

Sorry, my bad. Make that Rand, West By God Virginia.

I can easily see the worst player in the league taking Moss in like the end of the 4th round and then Moss going wild and it somehow helps the worst dude make the playoffs. There’s always some guy who defies the odds and rewards a non-value based draft choice.

Don’t piss them ‘Eers off. They’re already gonna do enough damage to the Big 12 without you Jayhawks riling ‘em up.

Harbaugh effusively praising a player, perhaps to the point of insincerity? I’m shocked. Next thing you know he’ll claim Brian Jennings is one of the better long-snappers on the team.

I had somebody take the Icon in the 1st round last year. We all laughed at him and then he ended up in the playoffs. Fuck that guy

This is sarcasm, right?
