Brook Lopez Gets 4 Years, $61 Million From the Nets, But Brooklyn Can Still Pursue Dwight Howard After January 15th
Brook Lopez will remain a Brooklyn Net.
For now.
The Nets inked Lopez to a 4-year, $61 million contract because it couldn’t come to a deal with the Magic for Dwight Howard. But all is not lost, Nets fans – you can still trade for Dwight Howard after January 15th!
That leaves a few remaining suitors for Howard this summer:
- Houston
- LA Lakers
- Atlanta
- Any other team with a clue willing to trade for a Top 5 player in the NBA
The problem: Howard hasn’t changed his stance on where he wants to go next. Why not? Don’t know. You’d have to ask him.
Houston could put together an enticing package – something like 2012 1st round picks Jeremy Lamb and Royce White, Kevin Martin’s expiring contract, the Rockets’ No. 1 pick from Toronto (in the Lowry trade; it’ll be Top 10) and hell, toss in 2011 1st round pick Marcus Morris. That’s four first round picks and future cap savings. But obviously the Rockets would first need a long term commitment from Howard, who would have to ask himself – do I want to go to a franchise that just lost a ton of talent? Howard would be surrounded by rookie Terrence Jones, wing Chandler Parsons, point guard Goran Dragic [Ed. Whoops! He's in Phoenix.], Luis Scola, Patrick Patterson and … geez, not much else. That group winning anything? Using that trade as a template, Houston would be best served to yank Jeremy Lamb out of the deal and add in another future No. 1 pick … and even then Howard might balk.
As for the Nets … this doesn’t really change my Eastern Conference rankings from last week. What might is when we hear more about Derrick Rose’s return. I might end up sliding Chicago down to 7th and bumping New York and Brooklyn up a notch:
1. Miami
2. Boston
3. Philadelphia
4. Indiana
5. Chicago (probably being too generous)
6. New York (yup, Knicks ahead of the Nets)
7. Brooklyn
8. Cleveland
9. Orlando (obviously subject to change if Dwight Howard is dealt)
10. Milwaukee (can’t wait to see a full season of Jennings and Ellis)
11. Washington
12. Atlanta (could fall further if Josh Smith or Al Horford are traded)
13. Toronto
14. Detroit
15. Charlotte

According to you, he signed with the Suns
July 11th, 2012 at 7:15 PM
i was hoping this saga of bullshit would finally come to an end…

Thanks for the quality filler of both linking to your earlier post with the rankings and also reposting the relevant content from it into this one.

Billy King, still a moron. Overpaying for an injury prone center who cant play defense. What a dumbass
July 11th, 2012 at 7:26 PM
Loling
July 11th, 2012 at 7:29 PM
from now on anytime i hear dwight howard im gonna associate him with shit, and itll make me think of the old joke of why shit is tapered at the end. it’s so your asshole doesn’t slam shut.
July 11th, 2012 at 7:33 PM
and it sucks because i liked watching him play, it’s just getting old, almost as bad as favre
July 11th, 2012 at 7:36 PM
On the world network, Bucher reported that Howard is now trying to get this year voided due to the team giving false information or something. It was difficult to understand since I zoned out a bit.
July 11th, 2012 at 7:42 PM
Dude, you should never go full retard.
July 11th, 2012 at 7:52 PM
The pistons BLOW. Howeva, they are not the second worst team in the East. They are at least better than the Raptors.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:06 PM
Pistons definitely not better than the raptors. The additions of Lowry, Fields, and Valenciunas are solid.
And dwight howard is just flat out unintelligent. Just shut your mouth, dude
July 11th, 2012 at 8:11 PM
Watching idiots in desperation is terrific. His agent should either muzzle him or he needs a new agent. Every day with a new juvenile twist just makes him look even worse.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:18 PM
Cavs will threaten for a 7-8 seed for 1/2 a year, then injuries will ravage their young thin lineup. Hopefully, the lotto will be kind and we can get another top 5 pick.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:22 PM
Milwaukee is destined for failure with a backcourt of Ellis and Jennings. Ilyasova is destined to average 18 and 14 this year scooping up all the bricks
July 11th, 2012 at 8:38 PM
Wasn’t Rose’s recovery time 8-12 months? Has anyone said anything shorter?
July 11th, 2012 at 8:40 PM
Mavericks get Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones from Indiana for Ian Mahinmi. Good job by cuban and donnie nelson
July 11th, 2012 at 8:43 PM
Also, why do people keep insisting the Knicks will be good? Didn’t we just see this last playoffs the team fits terribly together, Amare’s health is deteriorating, we have a 25 game view on Lin, and they just signed an already rapidly declining Jason Kidd to a multi-year deal?
July 11th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
Agreed, but who would you put ahead of them?
And Chicago should be higher, they’re a regular season juggernaut.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:50 PM
If anything…allowing Lopez to play until January 15th will only lower his trade value.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
Agreed, but who would you put ahead of them?
Fair, more just when players talk during the free agency process of wanting to go to the Knicks because they’re a contender and talking heads seem to agree with the thought process.
As for Chicago, hard to know how I want to react to them. Seems like a huge blow with Rose out until at least January and knee injuries take a season of playing to really be back, but yeah, we’ve already seen them win in the regular season without Rose.
July 11th, 2012 at 8:54 PM

I only love this signing because it prevented the Trailblazers from throwing the max at him.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:04 PM
Chicago is a regular season juggernaut but they will be without rose til at least february
July 11th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
Miami, Boston, Indiana, Chicago, and then throw in any other barely average 4 teams
July 11th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
Love the get by the Mavs for Collison. Can be an energy player at times for big D.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:12 PM
Love the get by the Mavs for Collison.
Yeah, Collison isn’t that bad of a consolation prize for the Mavs. Really like his game.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
Cleveland is not making the playoffs.
July 11th, 2012 at 9:27 PM
You know your conference is pathetic when the Sixers are ranked 3rd.

SIxers are a 6 seed at best.

You live in Philly too? Let’s tussle.

bout an hour south…and that’s still too close for me. philly is the fucking trash of major U.S. cities
July 11th, 2012 at 10:10 PM
How does an Atlanta team with Al Horford, Josh Smith, and Jeff Teague not compete for an 8th seed in the East? Horford and Smith have been their best two players for the last couple of years.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:18 PM
you don’t come here often do you? We don’t hang here for logic
July 11th, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Horford, Smith and Teague? Who on that team can make a shot?
Are they the new Big 3 I don’t know about?
Maybe Lou Williams helps them battle for the 8th spot.
Not sure you realize just how much Joe Johnson mattered to that team. Marvin Williams was their 2nd best shooter who played big minutes (unless you count Willie Green)
July 11th, 2012 at 10:23 PM
yeah, site going strong for 6+ years now without logic.

Lou Williams is trash. His only move is dribbling at the 3 point line for 20 seconds then chucking an off balance shot at the buzzer.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:31 PM
This is awesome and is definitely getting saved.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
Well definitely without an editor. See:Goran Dragic.

Wizards make the playoffs as 8 seed next year, and are promptly swept by the Heat.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:00 PM
Easily the worst contract in NBA history.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:01 PM
Wizards make the playoffs
I wouldn’t bet on that
July 11th, 2012 at 11:02 PM
Easily the worst contract in NBA history.
Former Sixer Elton Brand thanks you.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
I don’t know what “we” saw, but what I saw was a squad that caught fire after a coaching change and in the playoffs wound up losing their starting point and shooting guards after losing the other starting point guard the month before. The Knicks are better than Philly and Indy and as far as Boston, while Amar’e health is “rapidly deteiorating” at the age of 30 what is the status of Garnett’s and Pierce’s health at 36 and 35? The Knicks will be contending in the East.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
They are not a big three but Al Horford was an All-NBA Player in 2010-2011 and was injured in 2011-2012. Smoove was snubbed from an all star spot this year (and two years ago too). Teague probably isn’t a top 10 PG but he can get to the basket and score. Johnson will be a huge loss, they got John Jenkins from Vandy (who destroyed Kentucky) who may be able to provide some scoring and add in Lou Williams. I’m not saying they are a contender but damn if they can’t compete for a playoff spot in the terrible East.
The Wizards making the playoffs? You’re obsessed with John Wall. Cleveland has a chance just because Kyrie Irving is so damn good. Orlando is a crap shoot. And Milwaukee is a very big unknown.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:15 PM
July 11th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
Contending for what? Another first round loss? Last year you kept going on about how they were gonna make a deep playoff run, the year before you all but guaranteed they were gonna take out Boston in the first round. How did those series work out for them?
July 11th, 2012 at 11:17 PM
Personally, I’d drop the Jordannaires down to 16th or 17th in the East, somewhere behind Duke and UNC.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
None of the guys you named on Boston have microfracture surgery in their past or health so bad their contract was uninsured. That’s the status of the Boston guys vs. Amare.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:21 PM
Darell relies on his eye test and eye test only. And his eye test is fucking terrible.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:27 PM
I really don’t know what microfracture knee surgery has to do with the back, which is the reason for Stoudemire missing games this past regular season. And if I recall correctly, Garnett is coming off major issues with his knees.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:29 PM
1. Miami
Pretty much coulda stopped right there. I was surprised how the Ray Allen deal went down, but that should tide them over when Wade misses time. I thought worst case they’d win only 50 due to injuries, not sure that even slows them now.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:29 PM
so you’re saying they won’t make a run because I said they would beat Boston last year or is this a cute little attempt to throw a shot at me? At least I’ll know if I ever want to look back at any of my previous posts, I’ll have you around as my personal, walking archives. Thanks for that.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:30 PM
Sorry, we were looking for Fire Extinguisher.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Nada, i actually was a copy editor in college. Enjoyed the gig
July 11th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
The Hawks won’t be contenders as long as they’re relying on Josh Smith to be their primary or second scorer. He falls too much in love with his jump shot anytime he hits one and become erratic. They’re going to miss Joe Johnson.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Lay off, J-Mac. Everyone’s been using that line for years and it has nothing (well, mostly) to do with you.
/drink another jaeger bomb
July 11th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
y’all are some thuuugs
July 11th, 2012 at 11:38 PM
They’ll miss 4th quarter Joe Johnson but won’t miss quarters 1-3 JJ. The battle for spots 6-8 is going to be horrendously ugly
July 11th, 2012 at 11:38 PM
With that said, I don’t disagree with Chicago dropping some with D-Rose definitely not 100%
July 11th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Scripty, miami will lose their fair share due to boredom and injuries but will be ready for the playofs
July 11th, 2012 at 11:40 PM
what does it matter where chicago finishes? for that matter, no one but the heat matters in the ec
July 11th, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Yeah;
July 11th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
do the Bulls beat the Heat this year if Rose doesn’t get injured?
July 11th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
I see them chasing history for some reason.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
No way
July 11th, 2012 at 11:45 PM
the injury and them losing the series all happened so fast but it’s amazing how much that changed the complexion of the 2012 season, assuming someone says the Bulls might have won.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:46 PM
With the way lebron was playing, nobody on the bulls could have stopped him..and we see how easily Rose was stopped by James
July 11th, 2012 at 11:49 PM
feels like the Bulls would have challenged them more than Boston did, and it was 3-2 Celtics with a home game before the Heat advanced. but the NBA is not really in my wheelhouse.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:54 PM
the bulls couldn’t beat the sixers w/o rose. you need more than one star
July 11th, 2012 at 11:56 PM
vez, if you’re in the mood for giving advice, i need immediate help before we go rural…how to deal with living with the in-laws for three more weeks without going absolutely crazy.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:58 PM
I don’t see a history chase for a few reasons. #1 – Spo. #2 West Conf. #3 Despite adding Ray Allen, an injury to LBJ or Bosh would immediately cause a few losses (I don’t think Rashard will do much but concede him helping is not impossible). Further, those two will have Olympics mileage. #4 They can have some imperfections despite their fine team.
I think a stab at 70 more likely next year. I think this whole year will take something out of the Heat at times.
In reality, I don’t think a run at 70 is likely. When the Bulls did that, the league was watered down IMO and MJ had that one-in-a-lifetime laser focus on the court b/c his life was a media circus everywhere else.
July 11th, 2012 at 11:58 PM
sadly rollo, you’ve found the ONE thing i’m no expert at. good luck.
maybe take out your frustration with drink
July 11th, 2012 at 11:59 PM
have they inferred a run at 72? or is this media wanking?
/not redundant
July 12th, 2012 at 12:03 AM
I’m very cautious about UA shoes, but those spine shoes look enticing for running shoes. Still can’t beat the Free’s.
