Wimbledon Bet Nine Years Ago on Roger Federer Wins a Charity $157,000
Oxfam, an international charity, collected more than $157,000 in winnings as a result of Roger Federer’s record-tying seventh Wimbledon title. How? Because a gentleman by the name of Nicholas Newlife made a wager back in 2003 – the year Federer won his first Wimbledon title – that Federer would go on to win seven titles at the All England Club. When Newlife passed away in 2009, his estate and its assets were bequeathed to Oxfam, setting them up for quite the gift when Federer defeated Andy Murray Sunday.

I look forward to reading a piece on Gawker about how the charity should return the money to the bookies.

Gawker is horrible. However, I think Slate would be the first to write a column taking up that cause.

Nicholas Newlife? Are we sure that some newspaper isn’t making this up and having a little Dickensian fun with the rest of us?
