RA Dickey Will Not Start the All-Star Game. Matt Cain Will.
RA Dickey, baseball’s best pitching story through the first half of the season, will not start the All-Star game. That honor will go to San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain.
Dickey is having an incredible season – the 37-year-old knuckleballer is 12-1 with a 2.40 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and opposing hitters are batting just .203 against him. This is dominance: 123 strikeouts vs. 26 walks say.
Cain’s having a strong season, too – 9-3, 2.62 ERA, and he tossed a perfect game, too.

So Tony LaRussa didn’t go with the simple, common sense move that wouldn’t give him a chance to look brilliant? I’m shocked.
July 9th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Huh? What am I missing?
July 9th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Going with the starter who’s having a great season AND threw a perfect game this year?! What was he thinking?!
July 9th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
he doesnt start the asg because his pitching face scares children
July 9th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Tony larussa shouldnt be managing the game anyways. Just another idiotic move by bud selig to stroke his buddies
July 9th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
any idea if larussa gets paid for this?
July 9th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
The managers of the previous World Series teams get the ASG, don’t think Bud invented that rule
LaRussa is however deserving of scorn for his shitting on Queto and Greinke using an explanation that might violate the CBA
July 9th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Almost as egregious as Weaver not getting the start for the AL. That being said I’m of the
opinion, there’s nothing stupider then getting upset over who does and doesnt start the All-Star Game.

five cases of Yukon Jack.

Hea beating him in every category except perfect games. The man is 37 and out of the league. Give him the damn ball.

July 9th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
And *was out of the league
July 9th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
He looks like a little person in that photo.
July 9th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
A city of 8 million scorned!
July 9th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Sure, but it’s always worthwhile to call Tony LaRussa an asshole.
July 9th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
The decision is solely due to the existence of that Dickey photo. Can’t fault La Russa on this one.
July 9th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Truth.
Maybe they want Dickey in later in the game with Ruiz? Not like the NL doesn’t have an insane roster of arms…Cain, Stras, Dickey, Kershaw, Gio, Hamels, Kimbrell, Chapman, Hanrahan, Papeldouche.

i just threw up in my morning glass of rawson’s creek

The early March bitching over who is and isn’t the 68th best college basketball team is much worse.
July 9th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
In fairness La Russa was probably drinking when he made this decision

for this and comment 4, you get all my ;
July 9th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
that face is far too aggressive for a knuckleball
July 9th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
No, but he did make it so the ASG in baseball ‘matters’. Since it does, LaRussa shouldn’t be managing the game
July 9th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Is it just me, or does this Cat look like Paul Giamatti complaining about a shitty Merlot?

For TBL:

Guess we’ll have to draw our own conclusions.
BTW Cleet, thanks for that link on twitter on Saturday, was awesome
July 9th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
For TBL:
to be fair cleet, many folks were waiting/hoping for braun to fall through his ass
July 9th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
I get that TLR is an asshole and people don’t like him, but this is just completely false. Read the CBA again – the rule only applies if the player has already been placed on the team. There are no CBA rules in place for who the manager can select.
July 9th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
This seems like a perfectly good spot to give a shout out to the King of No Pants squad, which is currently a cool 28.5 games up on the 2nd place team in the unofficial TBL fantasy league.
To Matt Cain, MadBum, CC, Ernesto, Cap’n Jete, Miggy, Ethier, Yadier, Trout, and the rest: Well done on a solid first half of ball. Keep it up boys…
July 9th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Are you chewing gum?!
July 9th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
You always start with the knuckleballer, and follow up with fastballer. Standard baseball logic (I thought).
Larussa’s a massive jackass … but he does have rings.
July 9th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Your welcome, I was going through an old post I did for an old tumblr site about video game music and remembered you referenced that CVII last week.
True, but few did it with such certainty and arrogance as our fearless leader.
July 9th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
continue to tell everyone to get fucked LaRussa, even in retirement. hilarious.
July 9th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Ah, so he’s just ignorant on how the rule works…weird for someone who wants you to know how smart he is, I’m still gonna guess there was pettiness involved
July 9th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
sigh
July 9th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
there is concern Posey is not capable of catching him…

Fuck Queto and Phillips. That is all.
/Jason LaRue’s head
July 9th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
so then posey is a shitty catcher? ok…
July 9th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
clearly, he is no Josh Thole, who should then be on the squad for his glove alone?
July 9th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
I would pitch Dickey between two hard throwers.
Keep the other team off balance for a while.
July 9th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
so then posey is a shitty catcher? ok…
not at all, just not used to that pitch
