Nick Young Signs 1-year Deal with Philadelphia. Are the 76ers the 3rd Best Team in the East?
Nick Young, the trigger-happy wing from USC who was a key figure in the Clippers’ first round playoff victory over the Grizzlies, has signed a 1-year deal with the 76ers. Young, who spent five seasons with the Wizards, just turned 27 and is an erratic, but talented scorer. In his best season in Washington, he shot 44 percent from the field and 38 percent from deep, and averaged 17.4 ppg. The downside? Washington won 23 games.
Doug Collins is building a beast in Philadelphia. He’s collecting as many long, talented wing players as he can. Might a zone be in Philly’s future? Good luck trying to get through a thicket of gangly 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-9 arms on your way to the basket, Messrs. LeBron, Rondo and Rose. Remember, this is a 76ers’ team that took Boston to a 7th game in the 2nd round of the playoffs before collapsing late in the 4th quarter. (And yes, I know – if Derrick Rose plays in the 1st round, the 76ers aren’t winning that series.)
The 76ers decided to amnesty Elton Brand today, and they signed Spencer Hawes to a 2-year, $13 million deal, and I like the look of Philly’s nucleus:
C: Spencer Hawes, Lavoy Allen
PF: Thaddeus Young, Nikola Vucevic, Arnett Moultrie (R)
SF: Andre Iguodala, Moe Harkless
SG: Evan Turner, Nick Young, Jodie Meeks
PG: Jrue Holiday
It appears as if they’re letting their top scorer, reserve Lou Williams, walk. Williams was arguably their most clutch player, and shot 36 percent on 3-pointers. That role probably shifts to Holiday or Turner now. Depending on the progress of Harkless, I wouldn’t be surprised if they dealt Iguodala at the trade deadline if Philly was not in the position I think it’ll be in (3rd place in the East behind Miami and Boston, and yes, just ahead of Indiana).
Why so bullish on Philly?
Unlike Chicago and Miami, who can truly only rely on Rose/LeBron/Wade to score when it matters, Philly has Iguodala, Turner and the rapidly emerging Holiday. Plus, I think Harkless will be much better, much sooner than everyone is anticipating (ceiling? James Worthy?). An end-game lineup of Holiday, Turner, Nick Young, Iguodala and Hawes can get points from many places.
If the Pacers let Hibbert go, and Brooklyn doesn’t get Dwight Howard, Philly will be my No. 3 pick in the East. Here’s how I see the conference shaping up, with free agency not complete (and here’s the West, if you missed it):
1. Miami
2. Boston
3. Philadelphia
4. Indiana
5. Chicago (probably being too generous)
6. New York (yup, Knicks ahead of the Nets)
7. Brooklyn
8. Cleveland
9. Orlando (obviously subject to change if Dwight Howard is dealt)
10. Milwaukee (can’t wait to see a full season of Jennings and Ellis)
11. Washington
12. Atlanta (could fall further if Josh Smith or Al Horford are traded)
13. Toronto
14. Detroit
15. Charlotte

One of these days you’ll be right about the Hawks. Today is not that day.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
What?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
I don’t really think Thad Young is a PF. He’s more of a SF.
I still think the Sixers are dealing Iggy sooner rather than later. Dealing Iggy means that Turner will have the ball more often, which, I think, is the only way he’s going to develop.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Satire?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
This is… umm. What?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
A ceiling of one of the best players to ever play the game.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
So…you are bullish on the Sixers because, unlike the teams that have finished 1-2 the previous 2 seasons, the Sixers do not have a go-to scorer. That is fantastic logic.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Isn’t Rose expected to be back and healthy next year? They had the best record in the East last year with him missing most of the games. Why would they drop all the way to 5th??
July 6th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
It’s also interesting that you are so high on the Sixers after they failed to re-sign their star closer.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Philly is a strangely put together roster. They can’t get to the line, can’t shoot, and can’t post up. But besides that, yea, “beast.”
July 6th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
The Phillies replace Lou Williams with a very similar player. Call it a wash.
They lose Brand, and those rookies will suck. (Most rookies suck.)
No way they leap from an 8 seed to a 3.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Coach Mac loves Omer Asik.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
i hope to god the cavs aren’t #8. i’d rather see them at like #12
July 6th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Anyone else think if the Bucks can get Elton Brand that they would be pretty good? Nope? Didn’t think so.
/fear
July 6th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Scalia wasn’t it like two days later that he said Williams wasn’t the star closer they needed?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
They should just trade for Al-Farouq Aminu and be the best team in the league.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Philly being 3rd is misleading since the gap between #1 Miami and everyone else is big.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Ceiling? 95-96 Bulls?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Somebody has gotta put a stop to this……
July 6th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I’m so upset I can’t comment on the Biz Buzz of the Nets and Knicks.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I’m enjoying your recent trend of just throwing out last seasons results. Lamar Odom…Jamal Crawford…Nick Young
July 6th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Did Chicago do something this off-season where they traded their entire roster or something? If they remain healthy, there’s a good chance they’ll be #1 in the East.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
JMac sure loves to knee-jerk to every FA signing. if you think Nick Young is a plus to a team over a full season, you don’t actually watch basketball. if Doug Collins can get Nick Young to play defense and not be a selfish asshole on the court, he should get a freaking Nobel Prize.
Philly could be a 3 seed only due to the lack of viable teams in the Eastern conference
July 6th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
July 6th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
what was the Knicks record versus the Celtics, Sixers, and Pacers last year?
//Knicks will be 2nd Seed this year.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
I forgot about Chicago.
3 Seed.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
I wish I had.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
know why? Chicago cares too much about the regular season. teams like Miami and Boston care about the playoffs and championships. They don’t care if someone else gets the top seed. Chicago could get the #1 seed every year with Rose but it won’t mean jack shit because they won’t have enough to win a championship.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
The Cavs at #8, though.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
it’s always good to have hope even if it’s wishful thinking.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Did Chicago do something this off-season where they traded their entire roster or something? If they remain healthy, there’s a good chance they’ll be #1 in the East.
Bulls WITH healthy Rose: yes.
Bulls WITHOUT healthy Rose: no. As we just saw this past postseason.
They should just trade for Al-Farouq Aminu and be the best team in the league.
We can take Iguodala back to make that happen.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
is Indiana going to match Portland’s offer for Hibbert?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
No, Philly is following the Nuggets model, a model that won’t work. Yes, its fun to think that chemistry and good basketball will produce results…but it won’t. Philly will be the 7th seed, Milwaukee is out. The NBA is about whoever they want to win, and Philly is not it. Miami, Boston, Brooklyn, Knicks (they have to let Melo play in the Finals at least once).
July 6th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
While I agree with that (I’m surprised they havent retooled thier roster even a bit), I was addressing someone saying that the gap between Miami and everyone else in the East is going to be huge. There’s a chance Miami won’t even be the top seed.
/ not that it matters in the playoffs
July 6th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
You must have a lot of faith in Jason Kidd.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Knicks (they have to let Melo play in the Finals at least once).
Why?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, Boston, San Antonio, and Detroit all disagree with this. Knicks won’t win anything with this roster because they have no chemistry and they don’t play good or smart basketball
July 6th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
That’s what July is for.
/plus its for KG getting another month older
July 6th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
I think you can say the gap is huge because you’re talking about the overall quality of the team. Miami is still better than the other teams even if they don’t get the top seed in the conference. It’s about pacing yourself for the playoffs.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
oops, there goes Amare with another injury! Oh no, jason kidd’s leg fell off!
July 6th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
I think Lebron winning a ring this year, and D-Wade, Kobe, etc already having won one will hopefully light a fire under Melo and make him consider playing more team oriented ball. The Knicks have a pretty good roster assembled with high character guys, let’s see if Melo can lead the way.
He ain’t gettin any younger.
/ Broussard-speak’d
July 6th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
more faith in the second half of the season once Woodson took over and having a full offseason and training camp for Amar’e and Chandler to play together.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
I was addressing someone saying that the gap between Miami and everyone else in the East is going to be huge. There’s a chance Miami won’t even be the top seed.
Seeding is useless. Chicago had the #1 seed and they didn’t reach the 2nd round. San Antonio was the #1 seed and they lost to #2.
I was speaking about the gap between the teams. Right now, as it stands, Miami is the clear #1 team in the EC. If you tell me that Boston with Jason Terry replacing Ray Allen or Philly with its abundance of slashers/scorers or Chicago sans Derrick Rose or New York with Jason Kidd taking over for the Linsane One is anywhere near Miami, I will disagree with that.

ha ha ha
July 6th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
What! you mean Rondo finally stabbed Danny Ainge? He’ll be out a few games. Is that Paul Pierce in the wheelchair for real this time?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Artest’s brother tweeted that there’s an 88% chance that Dwight is a Laker by tuesday. I’m assuming MWP was the player the Lakers notified was going to be traded.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
This. You can work yourself into a frenzy about every FA signing if you are adequately motivated. JMac appears to be really motivated this offseason since its appears every signing alters the landscape of the NBA.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
only if Ainge gives Jeff Green 4 yr/$40 mil as rumored…i would support that stabbing
July 6th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
JMac circa 1976
July 6th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Lakers sure love to get them some big men who quit when the pressure gets to be too much
July 6th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
I agree with you on the talent gap between Miami and everyone else (they are almost a lock to return to the Finals), but I meant in terms of seeding.
Again, it doesn’t matter, but Miami could end up #2.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
I agree with you on the talent gap between Miami and everyone else (they are almost a lock to return to the Finals), but I meant in terms of seeding.

Could definitely happen. After back-to-back Finals appearances plus Team USA commitments for LeBron, they could start off slowly and concede the top seed to a team like Boston or Chicago or Philly.
only if Ainge gives Jeff Green 4 yr/$40 mil as rumored…i would support that stabbing
watch it happen (the contract, not the stabbing). The SF market for the next few years is mediocre at best, with Batum the top guy and Green amongst the top 5.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
God my head hurt just from reading the headline, did the actual article explain why Nick Young is actually good?
July 6th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
I’m no snake in the grass
/leaves quickly
July 6th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
I can see them starting off slowly, or being so motivated by their first championship, making a run at greatness and 70 wins. Especially with the guy they have in place as President and GM.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
I will give you the ownership to TVF (to kill it off if you want) if the Pistons finish 14th in the conference.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I knew he was starting to get bored with the slow summer when he got excited by a 16 and 9 stat line in international competition.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Another classic from Jason “If I say Nick Young is great enough times it will actually happen” McIntyre.
This is a clown post, bro.
July 6th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
God my head hurt just from reading the headline, did the actual article explain why Nick Young is actually good?
Yes, see below.
I don’t know how we didn’t see it before.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Nick Young, Clippers Savior.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
I actually think if the Dwight trade goes through, the Lakers should trade Gasol to Atlanta (who expressed interest in him) for Josh Smith (who wants out).
Instantly makes them younger, and fits even better with how Nash plays.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Josh Smith (who wants out).
Then the Hawks would fall even farther
July 6th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Where would you predict they finish?
July 6th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Nick Young sucks.
/ but he has a mean ‘fro
July 6th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
They made the ECF last season and the only reason they weren’t there again this year was Rose blew out his knee…this is a horribly overplayed talking point
July 6th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Glad to see the race war between Der Kaiser and BFR Highest WAR Ever did not spill over onto any other posts.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
his fro ain’t shit
/josh childress
July 6th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Shonn Greene sucks too.
/ He just sucks, no fro
July 6th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
where was that?
July 6th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Josh Childress ain’t shit.
/ everybody
July 6th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
8-10. This was a team that played .500 ball after an atrocious start, which was partly due to having a new coach, and zero time to work with him until that extremely abbreviated training camp. not saying they are about to turn the corner, but they are not horrendous.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
I just realized almost all of LA’s main rotation guys (Matt Barnes, Devin Ebanks, Jordan Hill, Troy Murphy, Ramon Sessions) are free agents.
That leaves us with our starting 5 and…nobody else except for young guys that suck. Interested to see what the Lakers do to develop a bench.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Oh and Steve Blake.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
@karma: Steve Blake, an old guy that sucks 9 out of 10 games.
July 6th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
In the Erin Andrews post, I believe.
July 6th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
what race war?
July 6th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
Just a joking reference to that spat in which the phrase “race card” was invoked.
