Justin Upton on Getting Booed at Home: “I Don’t Care What Fans Think of Me”
Justin Upton is the 3rd highest paid player on the Arizona Diamondbacks, and at times, one of the most dynamic outfielders in the National League West. But Arizona fans, for whatever reason, can’t stop booing him. Upton reached his breaking point on July 4th:
“To be honest with you, I don’t care anything what the fans think of me,” Upton said. “My teammates, my coaches, they know I come here and I bust it every single day. I try to do everything I can to help this team. My teammates have my back and whatever the fans want to think, they can think. They can call me lazy. I have heard that in the outfield. They can call me washed up. Whatever they want to call me but at the end of the day I am thankful for every opportunity to come out on a baseball field and I will try my hardest every day.”
Upton, 24, had a torrid June (.333 average) but is off to an awful start in July (1-for-18, five strikeouts). But the Arizona Republic wonders, where are the boo birds for Chris Young, his outfield mate? Young is the team’s 2nd highest paid player and significantly worse at the plate this year than Upton (.206 to Upton’s .263) and can’t get on base (.299 to Upton’s .346). It’s probably because Upton was the No. 1 pick in 2005 and considered a future star, right? Young went in the 16th round of the 2001 draft (to the White Sox).

I’m sure fans print out their team’s contracts page from Cot’s Contracts before they head to the ballpark and then base their booing on the information contained therein.
Or fans are just stupid.
So Carlos Lee went to the Marlins. The Astros are still absorbing most of his remaining contract, but I’m told that we made out like bandits in getting Dominguez and Rasmussen.
We were going to pay Lee anyway, so I’m just happy that Luhnow got something in return for it.

Dominguez needs to learn how to hit. Hitting .236 in AAA is not good.

Yes and youngs career .240 or so average. Hopefully he is getting moved. I’ll take Parra in center.

Hey D-Backs, we will gladly trade BJ for Justin.

So would I, but they need to sell assets. Time to rebuild.

Does he at least offset that with some degree of power? For a corner infielder, I’d certainly hope so.

might be the fact that for a guy who hit 31 home runs last season he’s hit 7 dingers so far when he had nearly double that last season at this time.
most likely it’s just drunk idiotic fans.

I think the fans got it wrong. As much as Young looks like a ballplayer, Upton has the better upside. Young reminds me of Casey Blake – he has the look, but at the end of the year, whattaya got?
July 5th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Nope. No power. He’s an amazing defender though.

Maybe when Correa is ready for the majors, put him at third and move Dominguez to short? But if Dominguez is already at AAA….
Like I said, we were going to pay all or most of Lee’s salary anyway. We could have finished the season with him and gotten nothing out of it aside from a few more home runs, or we could have turned it into younger players. I like this move.

Hmmm, you could back that up by not taking their money, then, diljack.
July 5th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
I am pretty sure the D-Backs are still paying Mark Grace, Jay Bell, The Big Unit, Schilling and others deferred money from the late 90′s teams…
