Goran Dragic Signs With the Phoenix Suns For 4-years, $34 million (and They Got Michael Beasley, Too)
Goran Dragic, the 26-year-old point guard from Slovenia who has spent the last four seasons with Phoenix and Houston, signed a 4-year, $34 million contract with the Suns. Dragic has been a career backup so far – he’s started just 36 games in four years, with 28 coming last season due to Kyle Lowry’s injury – but he’ll be the starter in Phoenix, taking over for Steve Nash, who is now with the Lakers.
(Question 1 for Phoenix Suns fans: I like Dragic a lot, and have raved about him for a few years on this site. But why would you draft point guard Kendall Marshall last week in the lottery if you’re going to make him a backup for the duration of his rookie contract?)
The Suns, in desperate need for offense – Josh Childress never returned to being the player he was in Atlanta after playing two years in Greece – also added enigmatic small forward Michael Beasley for 3-years and $18 million. Beasley, the No. 2 pick in the 2008 draft, will join his third team in five years. He’s a volume shooter who likely will lead the Suns in scoring.
(Question 2 for Phoenix Suns fans: If you could turn back time one week and talk with the Suns’ front office, and they said their top free agent target was Dragic – a player the previous front office had traded away – who would you have wanted them to draft instead of Marshall? If you’re thinking small forward – Moe Harkless? – would he have been able to save you money on Beasley, a maddening talent with a penchant for knuckleheaded behavior?)
I don’t anticipate the Suns being a playoff team in 2012-2013, or even a playoff contender. Early guess: 26-56. There’s still a gaping hole at shooting guard, and they’ve got a surfeit of power forwards (Frye, Morris, Warrick). The good news is that they’ll have a Top 10 pick in the 2013 draft, and also an additional first rounder each of the next two years from the Lakers (probably picks in the late 20s).

The Laker picks are in 2013 and 2015, due to the Stepian Rule.

Scripty you’re a still an asshole. Just a prescient one.

Super Cool Beas. Phoenix making some okay moves, but nothing drastic. The West is only going to be between Spurs/Lakers/OKC.
Speaking of which, I really think the Lakers need to trade Bynum for Howard. Now is the time.

And you’d say..if I could reach the stars, I’d give em all to you…..

And enough of Howard not signing an extension. Who gives a shit? They will still have Kobe and Nash on the books. Howard’s a dumbass, but he’s also an attention whore, so a little bit of winning in the LA limelight and he’s going to be coming back and signing and extension.
Hell, if Deron Williams resigned with Brooklyn of all teams, Howard will be inclined to sign with LA which can a) offer him more money than other teams and b) will fill his attention-whorish ways.

I’ll take that over 39-43 or something around there. As for SG if they can work the Gordon deal great. If not they can roll with what they got and go after Gordon next year or James Harden. I’d prefer Harden.
As for drafting Marshall thats fine. They need a backup for the time and after Dragics year 3 they can make a decision on Marshall. The Suns once drafted a canadian while having KJ and Jason Kidd.

Whoever trades for Dwight probably has a 80% chance of resigning him. Even Houston. He might turn down a few million, but not ~$30.
July 5th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Paying Eric Gordon max player money is a horrible idea.
July 5th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
If the Lakers get Howard, the Kobe/Nash/Howard trio sounds pretty damn phenominal.

Dragons deal was 4yr/30 with a 1 million dollar kicker every time he makes the all star game. I think that is a pretty good signing. I feared last night when I heard they were going to lock him up that they were going to give him some crazy 4/40 deal. I like having Beasley I just wish the Suns would have worked on trading for him before the all star break.

Morey is fucked.
July 5th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
They’d still have Gasol too. The deal is likely Bynum/World Peace for Howard/Hedo (or J-Rich).
July 5th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Raptors are fucked.
/ at least we have Landry Fields?

It’d have to be something like Pau and Bynum for Dwight, Hedu and another 4-5mill contract… (T-Rich?).
July 5th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
If Lakers can assemble a crew to take down the Heat, I am all for it…
July 5th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
I don’t think Nash would want to play with Jason Richardson.
July 5th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Sources say:
Source: Lakers are prepared to offer the Andrew Bynum and Metta World Peace to the Magic for Dwight Howard provided Howard signs extension… I’m told the Magic will include Jason Richardson in any deal for Dwight Howard.

just baby daddy drama.

July 5th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
The Suns also were in a position where they had to sign somebody to get over the salary floor. I don’t see either of these deals as being all that egregious. Also, Dragic can play some 2 and Dudley is serviceable.
Please read this so you stop saying stuff like this….it’s even from a Knicks blog

Oh could have been. I don’t remember. They were both traded pretty quickly. Perhaps it was a toss up.

I mean the kid could be Nash’s but I don’t think that would make him feel any better about a teammate that fucked his wife.

Too difficult to tell. Take the hat off kid.

only issue/unknown is how d-ho plays in important games with a real contender. never seen him in that situation, but i don’t pay attention to the nba unless i’m gambling

Hedo and Dwight it is.

Dwight’s only qualms with the Lakers is that he doesn’t want to be seen as a carbon copy of Shaq (too late buddy), and cause Kobe told him that he’d be the third option or something.
/ suck it up
July 5th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
has anyone ever said ‘suck it down?’

Did I miss the meeting where Kendall Marshall was proclaimed a sure fire starting NBA point guard so that when you draft him you’re not allowed to sign okay PGs to okay deals?
JMac appears to believe that Kendall Marshall and Dragic can’t coexist on the same team. Does he know Westbrook and Harden are both coexisting quite well on the same team and each better than the combined abilities of Dragic and Marshall. Every team needs at least 2 average to above average PGs.
The whole bit about going back in time makes no sense… situations evolve as time goes on. If you went back in time does it mean you have information as to Nash not returning via a sign-and-trade to the lakers for a bucket of picks?
Also the Beasley pick is pretty much as cheap as it gets for player of his caliber given the baggage.
I can’t figure out the purpose of this post. There’s just not much to be critical of here.

I hope the Suns run like hell. They may have a losing record, but at least be entertaining.
