Al Farouq Aminu, All Grown Up? Nigeria Stuns Lithuania in Olympic Qualifying
Al-Farouq Aminu, a skilled forward from Wake Forest, was the 8th pick in the 2010 NBA draft. After one season, he was dealt to the Hornets in the Chris Paul trade, and didn’t contribute much on one of the worst teams in the NBA.
This season, Aminu will probably get his chance. Between a healthy Eric Gordon (the Hornets should match Phoenix’s offer sheet), and acclaimed rookies Austin Rivers and Anthony Davis, Aminu should quietly be able to recede into a specialist role that fits him best: Transition/garbage points at the offensive end and a hound on the defensive end.
Aminu, who turns 22 in September, could be a breakout NBA player this winter. Did we see a hint of it when Aminu scored 16 points and collected nine rebounds in a major upset of Lithuania in an Olympic qualifying game? Nigeria is still no lock to play in the Olympics – next up: Greece, which beat Nigeria recently – but between the Hornets’ moves and his international experience, perhaps this is the summer that Aminu proves he’s ready to be an NBA starter. New Orleans traded away Trevor Ariza, and Aminu is the only small forward currently on the roster.
If you couldn’t tell, I’m bullish on the Hornets. I’ll predict strong seasons from Ayon, Aminu and Xavier Henry (the latter off the bench) and 35 wins, which should be good for 11th in the West. With the right lottery pick in 2013 – I’d focus on defense (perhaps Mason Plumlee?), since Gordon and Rivers will be taking plenty of shots – I think they’ll be in the discussion for the playoffs in 2013-2014.

Judging by that article, Derrick Obasohan is the better player.

I’ll predict strong seasons from Ayon, Aminu and Xavier Henry
you’re predicting a strong season from a dude that hasn’t done anything in the league, and had one strong game that is played under a different set of rules than the NBA. please tell me there’s more to your rationale.

also judging by that article…Sarunas Jasikevicius.
/no commentary, that’s just an incredibly fun name to say.

draw your own conclusions.

Not sure if ‘stuns’ is the right word if no one cares/would confidently bet on either side.
For instance:
Lesotho upsets Corsica in international luge competition.
Kiribati shocks Suriname in Dreamcast Power Stone tourney.
Mali stuns Tajikistan in goat skull punting.

Lowry to the Raptors. Who does Houston have left as a PG?
July 5th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Courtney Fortson and Scott Machado, unless I’m forgetting someone.

They’ll have to tack on another $10 million to Lin’s offer.

Hakeem Olajuwon isn’t walking through that door

The spread was Lithuania -6. So, it was a definite upset…but probably not a “stun.”
The spin on Aminu as the “star” of this game made me roll over laughing in my chair. Obasahon (who?), Tony Shinn (what?) and the shitty Ike Diogu played just as well.
July 5th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
They know what a steal they got with Machado. I bet he starts the majority of their games next year. I am still scratching my head trying to figure out why he went undrafted.

Not until we get the name “Jazz” back.
/ Burn in hell, Sam Battistone
You also picked England to win Euro 2012. Just sayin’.
July 5th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Remember when Ike Diogu was going to be a solid big man one day cause he had 20 rebounds in a game? Remember when Jamaal Tinsley had 23 assists in one game as a rookie? Remember when Tony Delk scored 53 points?
No?
I’m willing to bet that this guy won’t be shit next year, and the year after that.
/ one game performances mean nothing

Only country besides the US to have multiple #1 overall NBA picks? yup Nigeria (Okafor could’ve made it 3). The proportion of Nigerian born athletes in American sports is quite surprisingly impressive. The country bleeds athletes…and crude oil.
/resident Nigerian
//bleeds regularly
July 5th, 2012 at 5:02 PM
So, you’re willing to bet that this guy won’t amount to much because Diogu had a 20 rebound game, Tinsley had a 23 assist game and Delk scored 53 points? Seems logical.

Aminu is the only small forward currently on the roster.
Darius Miller would say something but he needs to get on a Greyhound bus to come see you.
July 5th, 2012 at 5:15 PM
Thats right… also Denver Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri was born and raised in Nigeria.

Typical Nigeria
July 5th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
J-Mac said that he expects Aminu to be a breakout player next year specifically because he dropped 16 and 9 in an upset. My point was, there’s no reason to expect a player to have a breakout season based on one game in an obscure international match played under different rules. If international success translated to NBA success, Sarunas Jasikevicius (word to Spence) would have been a star by now.

Al-Farouq Aminu
With a name like that makes you wonder if they checked him for IED’s before he walked into the stadium.
