Sports Figures Born On The Fourth Of July
Which athletes lived out an Oliver Stone movie, and like Ron Kovic, were actually born on the Fourth of July? Here are some of the most notable.
- Tennis star and current purveyor of Wimbledon interviews Pam Shriver was born on the fourth of July.
- In baseball, you have former third baseman Vinny Castilla, utility man Jose Oquendo, and Chuck Tanner, who later became the manager of the “We Are Family” Pittsburgh Pirates who won the World Series in 1979. The most famous, of course, is former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
- For the NBA, you have a famous set of twins, Horace Grant and Harvey Grant.
- Several NFL players, including DT La’Roi Glover, Hall of Fame running back Floyd Little, former star cornerback Erich Barnes, Jets Super Bowl hero Emerson Boozer, and current defensive end Will Smith were born on the Fourth of July. Oh, and of course, Todd Marinovich. [Edit to Add: Al Davis, the man who drafted Marinovich, was also of course born on the 4th of July].
- In hockey, Mike Knuble of the Washington Capitals was born on July 4th.
- Former Olympic gold medalist swimmer Sylvia Ruuska, diving gold medalist Mark Lenzi, and Layne Beaubien of the 2008 Silver Medal winning U.S. Men’s Water Polo team.

Lol. Somewhere today, Marv Marinovich is sitting in a darkened room, slowly drinking from a bottle of Southern Comfort, watching old games on the NFL Network. His wife knows better than to disturb him on this day. Every muffled firework repeat is like a shot to his chest, as he stares at a picture of Todd in his high school uniform. He takes another long swig, and all he can think of is what might have been.
