NBA Free Agency Tracker: Three Days in, Brooklyn and Boston Have Improved
Free agency is less than four days old, Dwight Howard hasn’t been traded, Steve Nash is still on the market (but supposedly deciding between Toronto and Dallas), and nobody has thrown big bucks at JaVale McGee. But plenty has happened. Let’s recap, shall we?
Kevin Garnett – Staying with Boston (3 years, $34 million)
Gerald Wallace – Staying with the Nets (4 years, $40 million)
Joe Johnson – Traded to Brooklyn for Farmar, Petro, Morrow, Stevenson, Jordan Williams, draft pick
Marvin Johnson traded to Utah for Devin Harris
Landry Fields – Going to Toronto (3-years, $19 million), effective July 11
Deron Williams – Staying with the Nets (5-years, $98 million)
Jason Terry – Signing with the Celtics (3-years, $15.6 million)
The early - very early – guess on how this shakes up each conference:
- Boston, which just weeks ago was thought to be rebuilding, should nip at the Heels of Miami all season and then in the postseason. That’s with or without Ray Allen and Jeff Green.
- New Jersey Brooklyn vaulted to anywhere from the 4th to the 8th seed in the East. They’ve got a dynamic backcourt, a nice swing player in Gerald Wallace, but frontcourt issues.
- Atlanta has been gutted, and is targeting the 2013 free agent class, which might be led by Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. Or neither of them.
* Left Omer Asik off the list. The Rockets offered him 3-years, $25 million, but it is unclear what the Bulls will do (match or let him go).
** Left Roy Hibbert off the list. The Blazers offered him 4-years, $58 million, but it is unclear what the Pacers will do (match or let him go).
*** Left Eric Gordon off the list. The Suns offered him 4-years, $58 million, but the Hornets are expected to match it. Chris Broussard will inevitably break that news, since he owns the Eric Gordon beat.

Marvin “magic” Johnson
If Bosh was healthy, Miami would’ve dismissed them in 5 games.

Was reading on SI that it would be nearly impossible for Brookjersey to get Dwight now. The hard cap is at 74 mil.
“Howard is set to earn $19.5 million next season. Combine that amount with the money earmarked for Williams, Johnson, Wallace and Teletovic, and you end up at $70.5 million for five players.”

Oh really? And what if Avery Bradley was healthy? Celts beat down the Heat twice with Bradley and Bosh playing. Didn’t have him at all for the series. Don’t buy the Bosh crap at all.

I know. The loss of the great Avery Bradley meant the Celtics had to settle for having Ray Allen in the starting lineup. In my mind the Celtics missed a second year defensive player in their lineup more than the Heat missed having one of the top 20 players in the NBA in theirs. I’m not buying the Bosh crap either, but I bet your boy KG is.

Hopefully Eric Gordon wants to be the man like Joe Johnson once did

Brooklyn is marginally improved at best…the addition of Joe Johnson gets them into the playoffs? — maybe. They gutted their roster, and re-signing Gerald Wallace was hilarious, as it very well might keep them from getting DHo.
In my mind, Brooklyn is no better off than they were before.

You’re nuts. Last year, Wallace and Lopez combined to play in 21 games for the Nets. Simply having them for a full season would mark improvement. Then they added one of the best 2-guards in the league not to mention Mirza Teletovic and Reggie Evans. But, you’re right….no better because they lost Jordan Farmar and Johan Petro

They instantly have one of the best backcourts in the NBA, one of the best wing defenders in the NBA, and a viable big man. They’re much better than last year.

Looks like this Shumpert for Nash trade will go down. Bahh I’m conflicted!
July 4th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
I’m not conflicted, I’m pissed if its true. Same old Knicks.
July 4th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Yeah, no.
July 4th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Yea I’m hoping they keep Shump out of it. But even if they did, Nash will make them a 55 win team. That’s worth it, I think?
July 4th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
The only way it would be worth it if you’re running D’Antoni’s offense for 1 year, but even at that, not at the expense of trading a young guard for a 40 year old PG who’s best years have been played in a system you just got rid of. I saw movie play out 20 years ago when they traded Rod Strickland for Maurice Cheeks and it wasn’t a good one. But outside of that, if your 2 point guards are going to be Nash and Lin, you’re going to need a 2 guard who can D up 1′s because they can’t.
July 4th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
The downgrade defensively from Shumpert to Nash is huge.
July 4th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Ha ha ha ha ha ha no chance in hell
July 4th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
we’ll be the most entertaining 35 win team in the NBA

**** Left OJ Mayo off the list.

thats who I want the Knicks to sign if possible. Memphis will miss him.
July 4th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
You’ve watched him play. If a team lets him play to his strengths, he is an asset. I think he would be a good 7th guy on most rosters.
But, if you want him defending a healthy Derrick Rose, DWade, Chris Paul or Kobe, you’re asking a lot.
The Grizz will miss him, but I think they expect Wroten to eventually fill that role of combo guard off the bench. The Grizz should have kept Grevis Vasquez for that role, IMHO.
July 4th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Ok…they are better off, simply based on being healthy. But I believe the improvement is marginal, and they are going to have zero depth. I’ll take the under on 42 wins.
July 4th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Nash’s best bet for a title (out of the teams interested in him) is the Lakers. But he is not interested in playing for them.
/ damnit, Steve

If you believe the improvements to be “marginal”, why set the bar at 42 wins for a team whose translated number of wins in a 82 game season last year would have been 27?

Man, thats asking alot of anyone. He’s an adequate defender who brings effort. But he does bring leadership, scoring ability, a high IQ and good court vision. I think Memphis eventually hurt themsevles by minimizing those assets focusing (and imo overrating) too much on Tony Allen’s defense.

He wants a max deal. Doesn’t care from whom. If Hornets match (which they will), then it’s up to the teams to come up with a S&T package. Unfortunately, Phoenix has little the Hornets want — no need for Morris or Lopez with Davis here and Kendall Marshall and Austin Rivers would make the most comically woeful defensive backcourt in modern NBA history.
