Steve Nash Will End Up With the Raptors Because Toronto Grossly Overpaid Landry Fields
Steve Nash, you’re about to go home to Canada. The Toronto Raptors just offered Landry Fields of the Knicks 3 years and $20 million according to ESPN’s Marc Stein. Yes, the same Landry Fields who dates this attractive model and had a solid rookie season in New York, but struggled in his sophomore year (blame it on Melo!), shooting just 25 percent on 3-pointers and 56 percent from the line (he was at 39 and 76, respectively, the year prior).
Why would Toronto do such a thing, considering they’re best player is on the wing (DeMar DeRozan), and they just drafted a wing (Terrence Ross)?
Easy – to keep the Knicks away from Steve Nash, whom the Raptors desperately covet. Even though it was a longshot that New York could land Nash, there was one glimmer of hope – a sign-and-trade with Phoenix for Landry Fields. There’s almost no shot of that now. Savvy move, Bryan Colangelo! Go all-in for Nash – the Knicks probably weren’t going to pull off the sign and trade, anyway, so who cares about $56 million? – so the 39-year-old point guard can have a swan song in Canada.
Smells like 32-50 to me.
[* As a few reporters have tweeted - even if Fields signs the offer sheet from Toronto, it can't go into effect until July 11th. If the Suns wanted to do a sign and trade with the Knicks for Fields ... that could still happen.]

Parise, Suter, Nash, Semin, Ryan, Yandle, Carle and Luongo.

Is this true? If you match an offer for an RFA, versus signing him yourself, can you still trade him, or do you have to wait until December, or whenever that deadline is.
It may be a dumb move basketball-wise, but I do enjoy the all-in “fuck you, NY” move by Toronto.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:25 PM
I don’t know why Colangelo insists on ruining the last few years of Nash’s career.
Steve, sign with the Mavs and call it a day.
Also, the Raptors have the stud from Europe (Jonas Valcjkhdlckjshclkhsdlkhc)…I’m expecting an 8th seed.

The suspense is killing Vlad.

To be fair, Nash on the Knicks would be pretty crazy. Its like the 2005 Suns, expect with Melo replacing Joe Johnson. As long as the offense is free flowing (and not heavily based on isos), the Knicks can win.
However, why would someone voluntarily want to be coached by Potato Head Woodson?
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:28 PM
If Toronto is “grossly” overpaying, what would you consider a fair offer, and why?
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:29 PM
I thought that the Knicks were still after Jeremy Lin. Why have him and then pay beacoup bucks for Nash?
Better yet, why bring Nash when you still have Melo on your roster? Wouldn’t it be better to try and save up some cap space and go after Blake or Ibaka or Harden next summer?

Check this out.

The Suns hated fields so this is all stupid. Now shumpert is a different story

This is crazy talk. DeRozan is awful. He’s a wildly inconsistent shooter with no handle and no feel for the game. Bargnani & Calderon aren’t star players but they’re significantly better than DeRozan.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:30 PM
I would love to see an increase in NBA GM’s making “fuck you” moves, particularly the “overpaying a restricted free agent because you know they have to match” move. Not sure if Portland was playing that one with Hibbert, but I like it.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Jeremy Lin should come to Toronto. Fan interest would be through the roof.

That’d be the smart option. Sign with Dallas and try to get that ring.

Classic MLSE, overpay an old player to raise the profile of the team but not win. Classic, I wonder what would happen if all New York teams were run futilely by at&t, I am guessing you guys would fuck shit up.

/ Bill Simmons’d
And yes, Derozan is nowhere close to being the early-00s Vince Carter clone he was supposed to be.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:32 PM
it’s not about that. this is simply a block move so the Knicks can’t get him.
i saw a reporter tweet that Fields will make $9 mil(ish) in his final year in Toronto.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Dallas with Deron, Dirk, and Nash would be a good team. I’m not sure they can beat the Thunder without one more decent player in the mix. Jason Terry is likely gone.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:34 PM
Hey Jason… double check that, but you should update the post to correct Beck et al tweeting about the sign and trade.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:34 PM
Blake Griffin just signed an extension…unless you were talking about Steve Blake.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:35 PM
What are the rules as far as either Toronto rescinding the offer, or Fields deciding not to sign it? That seems the only way NYK could sign and trade him, and that’s really tough if Fields has already agreed/signed anything.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Considering we once paid 12 million/year for Antonio Davis, this is a steal.
/ not really
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Then why not replace “grossly overpaid” with “made an offer” in the title?
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Okay… Beck says that it doesn’t matter. Fields can decide to not sign apparently, and Toronto is off the hook.
Seems shady, but still the only way he can be signed and traded.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Blake Griffin just signed an extension…unless you were talking about Steve Blake.
yes! Steve Blake!
/no. My bad. Hoopsworld didn’t update their 2013 FA class.
Dallas with Deron, Dirk, and Nash would be a good team. I’m not sure they can beat the Thunder without one more decent player in the mix. Jason Terry is likely gone.
Maybe Steve Blake??
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Why is this important? You want the contract to be as backloaded as possible. That’s just common sense.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:40 PM
could have gone with “made an offer” but elected for “grossly overpaid.” probably could have gone with 10 other phrases, too.
“wasted money on”
“offered Landry Fields Montreal and Quebec”
etc
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:40 PM
I don’t get it with all the Landry Fields is dating some hot girl stuff on here. He’s not that famous, she’s not even a little famous, and she’s not that hot. She’s about what I expect to see on the arm of a pro athlete. What is the fascination?
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Better yet, why bring Nash when you still have Melo on your roster? Wouldn’t it be better to try and save up some cap space and go after Blake or Ibaka or Harden next summer?
Knicks are screwed with cap space. They are practically capped out for 2013 with Chandler/Amare/Melo and cap holds for draft picks. They still need to flesh out like 5-6 more spots with a MLE and a ton of minimum wage guys.
Just wait til the Super Tax kicks in next year. Holy Shit. There are going to be a # of teams making moves way worse than this. Some guys are going to be given away.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:41 PM
The Suns would let Nash just walk then pay fields a dime
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Hypothetical question: What could the Lakers expect to get in a trade for Kobe Bryant (considering his contract)?
YYSA, the floor is yours…
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I’m pretty sure that would only be if the Knicks signed him based on Bird rights and Landry being a 2nd rounder. If he agrees with the Raptors, it would be spread out evenly over the length of the contract. This is precisely why Morey was a genius with how he offered Asik.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:46 PM
ha. Of course, Toronto is in neither of those provinces…
Has anyone ever heard of an agreement made with an RFA, then backed out on by the team/player? Is that common?
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:46 PM
What teams are poised/planning to capitalize?
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
I believe those are a package deal like Sanchez and Scotty McKnight.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Amnesty is the best the Lakers could do
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Could you explain that? I didn’t hear details on the Asik signing, other than complaints from ignorant callers on sports talk shows.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:48 PM
ha. Of course, Toronto is in neither of those provinces…
Only one is a province…
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:48 PM
He’d have to waive his no-trade clause first. I don’t think he’d do that unless the Lakers resigned Smush and Chris Mihm.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:49 PM
And since that tweet, Beck has backpedaled and hedged like crazy.

July 3rd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
If by best you mean better than Andrea Bargnani, that would be accurate. If by best you mean actually useful for winning NBA games, then no. Not even close.
If the Raptors do nothing else but replace DeRozen with Fields, they will have improved 5-6 games. Fields, even with last year’s poor shooting, was the 4th best SG in the league by WP48.
Calderon and Ed Davis were the only regular Raptors who contributed to wins last year anyway.
July 3rd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
How very French.
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:01 PM
What teams are poised/planning to capitalize?
Teams with big cap room will win (NO, PORT, CLE, maybe a CHAR); Teams with no cap room will have to sit it out and lose on the giveaways; Some teams might just accept cap hell and pay the high taxes. I think that’s the Nets plan; Boston possibly.
A team like the Lakers are intriguing. I think given the new LA media tv rights deal, they’ll sit tight and pay some tax. (I dont think Old Man Buss wants this but they’ll be able to do so). The Odom deal – IMO, was partly to begin doling off some payroll prior to this year do avoid an even worse sell off of assets for this future tax.
Tax levels from 2013–14
Amount over cap Standard tax Repeat offender tax
$5 million or less $1.50 $2.50
$5 million to $10 million $1.75 $2.75
$10 million to $15 million $2.50 $3.50
$15 million to $25 million $3.25 $4.25
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:02 PM
That’s okay, I once mixed up Montana with Idaho.
Talking to an American at a swim up bar in Mexico, said his son went to college in Missouri, I said “Mizzou Tigers?” he nodded. He asked me where I’m from, I told him Toronto and he asked “what country is that in?”
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:02 PM
I’d like to see the Cavs make a smart offer to Novak. I think he’s there for the taking.
The word is CLE is sitting it out, prepared to just take their lumps with young roster and get another lotto pick, and try to take on more picks and some dead salaries this trading deadline.
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
And I would like Phoenix and their cap room over all those teams.
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Fairly complex and this article does a great job of breaking it all down. Basically, Rocket offered 3/$25M. B/c he is a RFA w/ 2 or less years in the league, teams can only offer the mid-level exception (~$5M) for tyhe first 2 seasons of any offer. But, teams can offer a 3rd year for any amount up to the max. However, other teams can spread the cap hit out evenly over the course of the contract (~$8M/year) whereas the Bulls would have a cap hit of ~$15M the final year (5M+5M+15M=25M). In this same season, Boozer is set for $16.8M and Noah $13.5M and Rose $17.8M (not including Taj’s soon to be renegotiated deal).

yeah YYSA I was doing a breakdown of cap room, got about 1/2 way thru, then decided to wait for this spree to complete. The only reason I was on top of PORT’s was b/c of some CLE-PORT trade scuttlebutt at the draft
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Thanks Scalia. I wasn’t aware of that. I assumed Rockets would be taking huge cap hit in year 3.

2. In Mexico
3. I know American schools
4. I speak english without an accent
5. I’m not from America
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:12 PM
If there are a few NBA teams willing to handle the Super Tax, you will see a MLB-ish future in terms of salary disparity in the NBA.
The new deal will make it somewhat tougher to get to a high cap, the best way will remain hitting on your own player development and extending. Dumping picks to unload salary is a double loser. That’s why the Nets offer for D-Ho is odd. 4 picks? They must feel they can find talent on minimum deals.
July 3rd, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Sacramento, which doesnt even have cap issues – and has a terrible roster, sold off a 2nd round pick they could have taken a Euro with and stashed. Embarrassing.
July 3rd, 2012 at 11:01 PM
Who cares? I’m being serious. Who the hell really cares about this? A great, yet aging point guard headed to a team nobody watches. And why does there seem to be more headlines about the NBA now compared to two weeks ago? It’s time to look elsewhere for headlines … I’m begging for more Wimbledon coverage, not because I care much about tennis, but I need a palate cleanser following so many updates about Nash, Dwight Howard, Joe Johnson and every other player going to every other team that’s still going to be looking up at the Heat next June.
July 3rd, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Should go elsewhere if you want actual sports coverage
