Deron Williams Signs With the Brooklyn Nets: 5 Years, $98 Million

Deron Williams will return to the Brooklyn Nets. Williams tweeted, “Made a very tough decision today….” with a link to a picture of the Brooklyn Nets new logo. According to CBS’s Ken Berger, Williams has signed a five-year deal worth around $98.75 million.
Williams will be the centerpiece of a decent nucleus in Brooklyn – Joe Johnson will be his backcourt mate, and Gerald Wallace will start at small forward. The only questions are what will happen in the frontcourt, where Brook Lopez has one spot locked up, but power forward remains a question. The Nets’ bench will be led by 2nd year guard MarShon Brooks.

That does sound like a tough decision. For some reason I read the headline as Doug Williams signing with the Nets. I was more excited by that possibility

Jebus. I’ll admit to not following the NBA, but I thought his pudgy college ass would fail in the NBA. St. Self did some good work with him.

But what about Howard? Need more Howard. How does Howard feel about this? What does this mean for Howard going to the Hawks? How does this mesh with Howard playing in Houston? Will the help Howard adjust to playing with Kobe? Has Howard demanded anything after this? How about Howards relationship with Smith? You know they played AAU together, right? Would Howard be Smiths best man if he renewed vows? There are so many unanswered questions!

Say what you will about DHo but if he ends up in NJ this year they become Miami’s biggest threat, I don’t care how many 35 year olds Boston signs. Howard carried an average roster in Orlando for years – DWill and JJ are better than anyone he’s played with.

I don’t think anybody has questioned that. The problem is just that it’s impossible. Unless Orlando decides to trade him straight up for Joe Johnson.

This is why they made Joe Johnson move when they did. Big move paid off.

So williams, johnson, wallace, and dwight will play 48 minutes per game all season? That will be necessary because the Nets will have no depth and no financial flexibility to add depth.
It will be nice for more people to see Joe Johnson flame out in big moments

If he’s signing an offer that’s probably been on the table for the past 6 months this early in the FA process, my guess is he’s been told something about the D12 trade talks. Surely Joe Johnson wasn’t enough to swing him, was it?
/lol at Dallas coming up short on the years and money per

Put it this way: Adam Morrison might be playing big minutes for this team in April of next year. If the Howard trade goes through as reported, NJ would have traded away like 70+ ppg and 8 guys who averaged at least 15 min a game for them last year.

But does Chris Broussard know this?

Ummm, 5 yr/$98.75 million is NOT a “tough decision.”
/First World problems, indeed.

They don’t have anything to trade for Howard and with 3 big money deals (Williams, Johnson and Wallace) they also don’t have the cap space for Howard.
They clearly decided that Howard wasn’t going to happen when they made the move for Johnson.
July 3rd, 2012 at 9:20 PM
That would seem un-doable at this juncture. I would say a core of Williams, Johnson, Wallace, Lopez, and Marshon Brooks could take Atlanta’s place as a perpetual 45 win team. It looks like the East is a bit of a jumble after Miami and Boston.
July 3rd, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Plus kris humphries. He’ll get you 10/10 on average. Thats all you need from him
July 3rd, 2012 at 9:37 PM
The East is Miami and then everyone else. Boston is closer to the jumble than elite in the East. Orlando and Brooklyn are probably looking for a third team to consumate the deal, but I’m sure at this point they’re ready to get rid of Howard as he is ready to get out of there. The cap is a soft one and even at that it is only going to be as restrictive as the guy who is writing the checks allows it to be. I don’t think this guy is worrying about it at this point.

Just love that Mark Cuban’s master plan has burnt to ashes. It will be fun watching him shell out big money to pair Dirk with Chris Kaman and Raymond Felton.
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:02 PM
This nucleus is still gonna suck ’cause Mark Blount 2.0 is in charge of protecting the basket.
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Oh and Tyson Chandler is somewhere laughing his ass off right now.
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:06 PM
I dont see how Howard can stay in Orlando at this point. The Magic should take what they can get for him, suck for a couple years and hope they get a HOF caliber player with the #1 overall pick for a 4th time. Keeping him around would just lead to an ugly situation. He doesnt want to be there, and the fans have turned on him.
Also, Cuban just won a ring, he’s playing with house money now. They were never going to win multiple titles in the Dirk era.
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:10 PM
If Brooklyn can’t flip Lopez for Dwight they’re still going to be awful defensively. At least the Knicks have Chandler.
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:18 PM
Oh yea, I agree that the Dallas run was a bit flukey. They won with Jet & Barea as the 2nd & 3rd scorers. Was never going to happen again. But looks pretty bleak right now.
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:47 PM
They offered the absolute max that the retarded CBA allowed them to… how is that Dallas’s fault?
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Dallas is a lottery team next year. Which is OK. You have to reload sometime.
July 3rd, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Screw this shit. Hockey fans of teams like the Wings, Pens, Hawks, Wild, Flyers, Devils, Preds have been on the edge since Sunday. Not to mention the countless other fans of other teams that have seen a flurry of activity lately.

Stars get jagr and derek roy. Suckers
July 3rd, 2012 at 11:18 PM
Don’t understand why the Stars and paying 40+ year olds 4M+ A year. I think the Roy deal was solid. Steve Ott’s a third line center.
July 3rd, 2012 at 11:27 PM
The Sabres could’ve gotten a bag of pucks and it would have been a good trade for them.
July 3rd, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Gimme a break. Not counting his last year. The 3 previous non-injury riddled seasons he was a 70+ pt player.
July 4th, 2012 at 12:38 AM
Roy’s health and attitude are huge question marks. Not the case with Ott. The Sabres still need to get more scoring, but Roy was not going to be in the long-term plans.
July 4th, 2012 at 12:42 AM
the sabres probably should have dumped roy a while back. Doesn’t mean he isn’t a solid player. Now if Parise would just sign with the kings all would be well.

You guys read too much TBL. Howard is still going to the Nets. Book it.
July 4th, 2012 at 2:13 AM
Combined with the Rangers miserable performance tonight, it’s a crappy sports day here in the DFW.
