Ever notice how the EIC doesn’t put any Asian babes in the Roundup?
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:33 AM
They make splodey movies and charge $15 bucks a ticket?

Tiger’s third win of the year…
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Is this Thursday, June 28th???? If so, more Blake Lively please.
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:38 AM
can get it.
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:39 AM
Probably was a girl in that mascot suit, way to go tough guy. Guy’s from France, anyone surprised?
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:40 AM
I know, it’s not like anyone from America or any other country would ever do something like this? Totes!

Well shit. There goes about 30 Reddit “Funny” posts a day right there.

Like a world known soccer player, for example?

Don’t worry, there are still the fake text messages and phony facebook status quips
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Roundup’s kinda weak today.
Good thing – I really need to do some work.
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Nastia Liukin is tougher than the French runner.
After seeing that old Miller Lite ad yesterday, I thought, “let’s combine them!”
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:50 AM
Can’t wait to see the spike in crime.
Kristin Kreuk has been featured a couple times…she counts. Great picture today tho.

you think you could do any better? what do you do for a living?
/EIC
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Lukin wasn’t going to make the team even if she didn’t faceplant. She just wanted to get out there one last time before she retired. Heldover is right, those girls are a lot tougher than most guys.
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:53 AM
that approach on 18…the low, running 9i from about 190 to that green with trouble behind was fucking unreal. so difficult…had to control the distance and rollout perfectly. awesome.

July 2nd, 2012 at 8:54 AM
that’s pretty shitty on many levels.
July 2nd, 2012 at 8:58 AM
It should be. And even though the new blackout rules are a good thing for fans, it really isn’t going to help.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Louisiana won’t be funding public libraries
FUCK YOU LA
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
I can’t believe she didn’t cry after doing that. I would have been bawling.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
What’s the Dakich story? Link took me elsewhere…
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
Well, let’s look at the value proposition.
Pay an exhorbitant amount of money for a season ticket license which allows you to pay a smaller, but still substantial amount of money to attend that actual game. Oh, and two of those games you are buying? They don’t even count!
Let’s top that with high fees to park and $10 beers, $8 hot dogs, etc. Not to mention the drunk, asshole fan factor.
No thanks, I’m good with watching at home.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
maybe instead of spending their money on technology and gadget accommodations in the stadiums for fans they should lower ticket prices so people can afford to go to games.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
So which way do you want it: healthcare, education, or libraries? You can’t get it all when you ration services, folks.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
Paraphrasing Ben Franklin: Any government willing to sacrifice a little education for economic security deserves neither, and will lose both.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:04 AM
If the NFL is concerned with lagging attendance, perhaps they should find a way to convince the owners that $80 just to get in the door isn’t a viable long term option.
/glares at Jerry Jones and his glitzy, lifeless toilet
//you want 50 fucking dollars to park?
///can’t wait for you to die, old man
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:04 AM
Oh man. I was watching that last night. I felt so bad for her.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:05 AM
The drunk, asshole factor is the big one here. This probably turns off a lot people, especially taking your kid to a game. Took my boy to a Ravens vs Fins game in Nov. 2010 in Baltimore. Had a guy run up to me while we were leaving, drunker than shit, yell “We kicked your ass” (induce slurring there). My boy looked at me with a quizzical look “What’s he doing Dad??”.
Nice.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:05 AM
I just can’t get into this show. Particularly any scene involving Olivia Munn. On top of the fact she’s a terrible actress, I’m just so sick of her since she’s in the roundup once a week.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:06 AM
Incredible that we have to choose…quite the society we’ve carved out for ourselves, can see why we think the rest of the world should act like us
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:06 AM
I love the NFL but turn down tickets to most Ravens games when offered. Its just a giant PITA. Shitty parking, expensive beers, asshole fans, terrible sightlines, 20-degree weather, long drunk-drive home.
I have a pretty sweet basement setup that gives me stunning picture and sound, affordable beers of my choosing, HD camera angles, and multiple game options. Why the hell would I want to go to the stadium?
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:06 AM

The first step is admitting we have a problem. America is not the greatest country in the world. But it can be.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:07 AM
Get it all? Pretty sure LA is barely providing any of those, let alone all of them.
So many ways, but mostly PS3 trophy level.

That was a line from the Newsroom.
But really, it depends on what you want from a country. Many countries have different forms of government and social services that may hold greater appeal to some people than our current system. There are a lot of first-world countries out there now, each with different pluses and minuses. Its not that America isn’t the greatest country in the world, it’s that it’s one of a few dozen.

Mississippi and Louisiana directly competing in the RoundUp for their rightful place as worth places in America.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:16 AM
i almost think that’s far too obvious, like you’re almost expecting Jesse to kill Walt at some point…
i’m thinking that towards the end Walt does something that kills or does Kill Jesse and loses his family in the process to end up with nothing in the very end. powerless and alone.
then again, i never saw the bomb in Salamanca’s chair coming, so…

See, that is actually spelled out in the constitution as opposed to the federal management of education or health services.
I love the people who instantly run to the nihilism argument when they have nothing to really stand on themselves: “What do you wanna do then, have people rioting in the streets because there are no policemen or firefighters?!?!!?!?!? OH THE HUMANITY!!!!”
No, dumbdumb, thats not what I said. I said that maybe the reason why they can’t afford libraries and other services is because they have inflated the local and state governments into unmanageable sizes??
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
A state law that takes effect Sunday requires all of a clinic’s abortion providers to be certified OB/GYN’s, and all of them must have privileges at a local hospital.
seems legit.
I heard on NPR that all of them are board certified OB/GYNs, and one has hospital privileges, but the other 2 are being denied privileges everywhere they apply because they perform abortions. Not legit.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
So which way do you want it: healthcare, education, or libraries? You can’t get it all when you ration services, folks.
You are definitely their target demographic. Yeah, let’s continue the corporate welfare but shit on the libraries. Well, piss on themselves if the citizens allow this to happen. The LA Gov. sounds like the Romney candidate for Sec. of Education.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:20 AM

Haliburton will pay for them. and the makers of the standardized tests will pay for our schools. our hospitals will be privatized as bank and healthcare partnerships to cover your ills and offer great adjustable rate financing offers for your visits to cover those high costs.

July 2nd, 2012 at 9:21 AM
So which way do you want it: healthcare, education, or libraries?
Incredible that we have to choose
Incredible that some people get all of them and don’t pay a dime into the system. And you see it at every level of the economic spectrum.
I know I’m lobbing a grenade in here, but ….
I’m likely one of the few here that like the idea of drug testing for welfare (starts today in some states). The simple reason I like it is that exact behavior is keeping them from getting a job in the first place. I know, for the largest home improvement retailer in the world, nearly 50% of all applicants are denied b/c they fail the drug test. I’m not sure I understand why a retailer’s pay is evaluated more stringently than public money.
And yes, I know that these new drug testing rules will eventually be struck down in some higher court.

The pretzel man is horrible; however, kudos for him on this take though.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:24 AM
Still blaming the hurricane for a wholly corrupt states problems? You do know that the state was a cesspool of corruption before the storm, right? The problem with the storm is it probably killed too many good/innocent people and not enough crooks and bad guys.

I would love Hank to figure it out by seeing Walt wear the heisenberg hat at a party and taking him down that way.
also, walt’s cancer coming back would be poetic.

I dont even know how to respond to that. Should I chant SEC or something?

July 2nd, 2012 at 9:27 AM
no problem with this whatsoever.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:27 AM
I think Walt’s lung cancer returns. He was coughing toward the end of season 4 and I don’t believe we heard his results of that follow-up exam he had. You know, the one in which he told that other guy to essentially man the fuck up.
Also, Breaking Bad season 4 will win the Emmy for Best Drama this year. Not Mad Men for its fifth season, which was very good but not epic like BB S4.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
It’s been what, six months since season finale? You seriously expect people to NOT talk about a show just because you haven’t watched it?

July 2nd, 2012 at 9:30 AM
what was tiger trying to do when he hits a 8/9 iron 190 yesterday? more spin than what he would usually hit, which i guess would be a 6?
it really wasn’t a true 190 yards. he talked about it after the round. it’s only 160 to the front and that hole is significantly down hill, which means players have to hit a lofted/high spin approach to that pin location if they don’t want to be long/wet.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:31 AM
Ah, Junior always showing up for the meals but no other scenes.

July 2nd, 2012 at 9:31 AM
No, just let me know when the public school system gets so good that all of the elected officials send their kids to them. Or, let me know that when given the choice of where to go (i.e. vouchers), the parents still choose the public schools based on merit and curriculum.

Well, if they want my tax dollars, I would love to know if they are, in fact, committing a crime. Seems like a small price to pay to get free monies.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Terrible idea. For one, it’s selective based on class and likely unconsitutional. Second, it costs much more money than it saves. Third, if you want welfare stipulations (as I do), tie them to education or community service. Want welfare? Get in a GED program and graduate in three years or your out. Same with community college education. We should be trying to get people off welfare not just handing out the money, but drug testing isn’t a means to that end.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
I’m likely one of the few here that like the idea of drug testing for welfare (starts today in some states)
Also, I think the study found it wasteful, only a fraction (like 3% were on something), and the judge ruled in unconstitutional.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
Has there ever been a well-written kid character in one of these critically acclaimed drama series? Wire? Yes. But I really can’t think of anything else.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
I understand where you’re coming from, but I kind of disagree. For the most part, the public schools in this country are a reflection of the country itself. You get what you put in. The reason most high income earners choose private schools is mostly because of the networking and name prestige that comes with it, which lessens the amount of actual work you have to do in the classroom and after you graduate.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Sally Draper and most of Meadow Soprano’s run were good
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:36 AM
Butters – I don’t need state drug testing to “save money”. Thats not a financial decission for me. But since you seem to be implying it, sure, I will support a spending measure like that (that has a net loss; i.e. expense to taxpayers) as opposed to other, more nefarious spending measures.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:37 AM
That article was atrocious. Everyone is missing the giant story here in yet another effort to pour gasoline on paterno’s grave. The fucking president of the university signed off on a coverup and no one cares because Paterno’s name was mentioned without context in an email.
Wetzel writes that Paterno really didn’t have any superiors and controlled the college from the beginning (completely false), then five grafs later said he could have instituted a cover up because he was worried about being fired after a 5-7 season. Who’s gonna fire him, WetzeL, if he doesn’t have any superiors? Its incredible to see the sports media utterly embarrass themselves over and over again with this story.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:37 AM
So you’re against wasteful government spending until it affects poor people…you’re like a walking Republican stereotype

if you want welfare stipulations (as I do), tie them to education or community service. Want welfare? Get in a GED program and graduate in three years or your out.
I like the idea in principal. A lot. I’m mean I think its fantastic, really.
At the same time I find it laughably unattainable. Ultimately, I think you’d find out who’s motivated to be a good citizen and who’s not.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Yeah, that always ends well.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:38 AM

Well this was fun
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Sally Draper developed a lot (no pun) this season, but Kiernan Shipka is not a good enough actress for that show. Her scenes plod along. And it’s not purposely done for that awkward teenager stuff of the character. Her acting is just not good.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I kind of disagree. For the most part, the public schools in this country are a reflection of the country itself. You get what you put in.
Well said. This is one of the MAJOR reasons why colleges are disproportionately better than KG – high school (I speak to the education system as a collective, not comparing college to HS). Plus the amount of funding colleges receive from private and public industry is mind boggling.

I lean left on a lot of things and believe welfare is a crucial safety net for a lot of people. It’s easy to use a few examples to demonize the entire program, though, which is why its unpopular in times of fiscal calamity.
But I do recognize that there’s a lot of waste. The goals should be to limit welfare for those who truly need it AND to create social mobility in order to get these people off welfare. I’m not sure how to do that other than implementing educational requirements. Yeah, it’s not perfect and would be tough to scale, but it feels better than the current setup.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:44 AM
They all do. Shit, the best kid actor on that entire show might be Jack Gleeson (Joffrey).
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
You are missing one MAJOR inconvenient truth: no one said that they have to participate. The violation you are referring to, which I presume is a violation of the 4th amendment, protects against an involuntary invasion of privacy. Well, once you carry yourself on down to the welfare office, you are officially submitting to their rules.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Depends on what you are asking the kid to do.
Anytime a series has a demand for a kid to be a whiny kid as part of a story, people bitch the kid can’t act.
I’d say the kid that played AJ Soprano was probably the worst actor from any of these critically acclaimed series. He was just the worst.
The kids from “The Wire” also probably benefitted from not being put in that position, where they were the overprivileged, snot nosed kid that nobody likes. I’m not saying they weren’t good actors (Season 4 is probably my favorite of the Wire….those kids were tremendous), but I think they also benefited from playing parts that were much better written than some of the parts that other kids are asked to play on these kinds of series.

+47 (yet those same 47% pay payroll, social security, medicare, state, local taxes, but don’t pay federal taxes because their AGI is too low and they advantage of the EIC tax credits)
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:46 AM
If you have a GED and CC diploma, there’s no real reason you should be on full welfare. Obviously there will be mechanisms in place to cover extenuating circumstances, but as a generalization I don’t believe someone with an associates degree should ever need welfare.
July 2nd, 2012 at 9:47 AM
I do like the idea of incentivizing welfare, but as you mentioned it seems tough to scale. You mentioned GED or community service as an example, but lots of folks on welfare might not have the physical or even mental capabilities to do these things. Can we create a “task” for the really fat people? Or the borderline mentally handicapped? Honest question.

First, we mine all useful fuels and minerals from South Dakota. Next, we erect a giant wall around South Dakota. Then, we dump all the people we don’t like, into South Dakota. Resident Dakotans would be allowed to have at these idiots, or move to North Dakota. We rename it South Dachauta.

As someone who legitimately has a tax burden every year (i.e. I don’t get money back), I get frustrated by the people who feign tax burdens only to get a couple grand back every year, and then be the loudest and meanest when it comes to taxes. I mean sure, your heart is in the right place, i.e. you want even MORE free money back every year, but seriously, if you don’t have a tax burden in April then you don’t pay taxes in the true sense of the word.
/yes, i know there are sales taxes, but everyone pays those.

July 2nd, 2012 at 9:52 AM
I’m not sure. Like I said, I think you need to carve out a rather large list of exemptions which will no doubt be manipulated by those looking for nothing more than a handout (lazy people work so hard to preserve their laziness). If you have a debilitating condition obviously you’d be exempt. But a lot of people on welfare — a whole lot — are fully capable citizens who can certainly perform community service, volunteer work or sit in a GED class.
Again, certainly not perfect but I’d like to at least try.

It’s pretty straightforward actually. Every year as long as you file your taxes you will see what your true federal tax rate is, after a year of paying and then all the year-end deductions and credits.

Won my match 92-94. I largely kept out of trouble and just avoided big #’s as best I could. Great time despite the heat yesterday.

When i was on welfare for a year and a half, i had to go to a work program a few days a week. I worked with a couple guys who never really looked for work and spent most of their time watching movies and playing video games. I got pissed because those guys were capable of finding work and they were doing nothing to get a job. I have limited options where i can work but at least i was applying to several jobs a week and doing my best to get off welfare. I totally agree that there are people on welfare who could get off it but just dont care to put forth the effort

The stark reality is that for most things, the government does everything they can to turn people down for assistance if they have even the slightest crack of a reason. Butters – i got ahead of myself on the tax post and didn’t go back and proof-read what I had written, but my argument is basically this: if at the end of the day you pay more than you get, then you have a tax burden. If you get more than you pay, then you don’t. Tax burdens and what your tax dollars pay for are two very different things.
Also, I love this gem right here: “EITC, the earned income tax credit is a benefit for certain people who work and have low to moderate wages. A tax credit means more money in your pocket. It reduces the amount of tax you owe and may also give you a refund.”
Soooooooooo, free money? Free money.

Well I was trying to avoid that part of the argument on a “i dont want to explain that in detail” approach and not merely writing it off. i might be on the DL from golf after my pair of 87′s this weekend in the most frustratingly painful fashions imagineable.
sat – hate the course…so cluttered. biggest problem with it is it doesn’t reward good shots. i hit two bad drives all day…on 1 and 18, the rest were 275-290 drives with a 5-yard draw or fade. the course blocked off one side close to the teebox but put trouble right where you were forced to land…so fucking stupid. 5 drives on the back 9 alone that forced me to chip out or hit around trees.
course is chardon lakes…fuck chardon lakes.
yesterday – manakiki…twisty turny donald ross course. played well, just didn’t make anything happen. took four 7′s, two of which were thanks to leaving shots in a bunker. was around the hole all day with the putter, but nothing dropped. just frustrating.

The reason high income earners choose private schools is because most of us went to college and saw the “students” getting “Education” degrees. It’s where failed engineers, chemists, scientists and writers go to die. Pay your fees, get your B’s. Until our teachers are held to higher standards, and expected to be educated themselves, private schools are fine.
The real problem in education is ignored. Female brain drain. 30 years ago my wife would have been a teacher, not doing what she’s doing now. The best and brightest women were teachers. There weren’t a ton of other options. My wife was a 4.0 student, got her MBA in 1.5 years while working full-time, and has a great job that wasn’t available to my mother, or anyone else in her generation. So now we get the absolute bottom of the pile. Make class sizes LARGER, hire better teachers, pay them more. Done.

yep…feel this one’s on the same track too. i just HATE HATE HATE courses that are tricked up and don’t reward good shots. especially courses that aren’t really that good to begin with.
the greens at this place are pretty tough and very small…it’s not like being 25 yards wide with jail on both sides is making the course an enjoyable experience.
July 2nd, 2012 at 10:51 AM
not sure yet. parents live in La Crosse but we are meeting my brother who lives in Menominee, so probably somewhere in between.

I like to envision TBL sitting there, waiting for the perfect time to drop a negative comment bomb on a comment from two day ago. Bravo sir!
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:00 AM
best part of the weekend was playing sunday and seeing that the storm friday KO’d one of my least favorite positioned trees on a course i play often.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:01 AM
awesome.
question…if a storm rolled thru augusta and felled the eisenhower tree, do you think they’d replace it?
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:02 AM
The people I know who have become teachers became teachers because they wanted to and always wanted to, not as part of a fall back plan. The assertion that education has fallen in this country because women have more opportunities, coming from someone supposedly edcuated, just exemplifies the fact that education and intelligence aren’t necessarily intertwined.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:02 AM
An admirable attempt at humor in your final comment, Ben. I knew a comment like mine would scare the snake out the bushes. You’re so predictable.
Vaya con dios.

Vaya con dios.
i believe “hasta la vista” would have been more appropriate there.
“vaya con dios” is more of a positive send-off.

July 2nd, 2012 at 11:14 AM

July 2nd, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I guess I need to add Point Break to my ever-expanding list.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Hot Fuzz is fantastic. Lots of throwaway lines that make it good for repeated viewings.

the banhammer, as tommy boy has taught us, is only useless against the bees themselves.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Anyone else read this is Roy Orbison’s voice?
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:18 AM
if a storm rolled thru augusta and felled the eisenhower tree, do you think they’d replace it?
only with the Palin bush.
That tree (and most of the key ones at Augusta) are protected with cables to prevent wind damage and lightening. They’d have a new on in there in a few days though. The hole is quite pedestrian when that tree doesnt come into play.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:19 AM
I get a grounding cable for lightning, but how do they use a cable to protect from wind?
/genuinely intrigued
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Ill – patience, young grasshopper.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:21 AM
The inscription on the banhammer is “Whomever yields this mighty hammer holds the power to banish the disagreeable on a Monday whim.”
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Anyone else read this is Roy Orbison’s voice?
yep. I just put that song on a mixed cd for my VAC 2 weeks ago.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:23 AM

today on cold call monday’s…ben’s cold dead body.
TBL: bees nuts, bitch.
/drops hammer
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:24 AM
As I’ve read it, there are cables and tethers. Somebody just covered this past Augusta (an SI writer?) The huge 100+ year oak that is behind 1/18 & the putting green has tons of these as well. In the end, the best method to keep a tree from falling to wind is to simply thin out the branchecs every so often to allow powerful winds to go through the tree instead of toppling it.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:25 AM
If the root base rotted or died, there’d be nothing they could do, obviously…
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:26 AM
did beekeeper Ben get banned?
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:26 AM
there’s really 1 other dude in the mix for a banning, but i haven’t given him enough rope yet to hang himself. He knows who he is.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:27 AM
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBYYYYYYY, he got it!
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I know I have probably earned a banning
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:30 AM
I still think you should blow it all up.
But whatever.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:30 AM
no need to thin out the branches. install cables approx 2/3 up the tree that tie laterally onto adjacent trees. the result is one giant wind resisting grove of trees. COME AT ME MOTHER NATURE.
July 2nd, 2012 at 11:31 AM
patience, young grasshopper.
meh… that’s a virtue i don’t possess.
i’ll just start an email chain with spencer on the subject.

I’ve spent the majority of my adult life working with people on public assistance. The stark reality is that for most things, the government does everything they can to turn people down for assistance if they have even the slightest crack of a reason. You people need to grow up and stop thinking you live in a socially progressive nation.
Me too.
I love the whole “get a job” thing since I work with people that can barely manage to feed themselves. The goverment here does not just give out free money. There has to be an activity going on and, like he said, they pull out all the stops to not fund people. Shit, they won’t even fund mental health care for people that I spend an hour a week with talking about people keep moving shit in their apartment or the guy that swears that people are crawling around in his attic.
