Joe Johnson Traded to the Brooklyn Nets, Thus Dwight Howard Will Not Be a Brooklyn Net
Joe Johnson has been traded from Atlanta to Brooklyn in exchange for spare parts, a deal that effectively ends any hope that the Nets can get their hands on Dwight Howard. Details of the trade are iffy – Marc Stein and some reporters say the Johnson trade is contingent upon Deron Williams saying “yes” to Brooklyn; Woj says the deal “likely happens with or without Deron.”
So Danny Ferry was in Atlanta how long before blowing it up?
Johnson, who has perhaps the worst contract in the NBA – he’s owed $19 million next year, then $21 million, then $23 million, then $24 million in 2015-2016 and he’s already starting to show signs of decline – was dealt in exchange for Jordan Farmer, Johan Petro, Anthony Morrow, Jordan Williams, DeShawn Stevenson and a draft pick. It is unclear whether or not any of those players have much of a future in Atlanta. Farmar, Morrow, Petro and Williams all have expiring contracts. Atlanta could be in position to be a factor in free agency next year – Josh Smith and Zaza Pachulia are entering the final years of their contract.
The good news for Brooklyn: The Nets kept Marshon Brooks! (Too bad he’s a shooting guard, like Johnson.) And Brook Lopez! The bad news – the Dwight Howard pipe dream is over.

Uh, what the hell are the Nets doing? Is this an example of “because Billy King” or maybe Prokhorov telling King to “find most expensive player for team, bistraya!”

Johnson and Williams – two guys who gotta have the ball in their hands a lot. There will be more entertainment value in the stands than on the floor.
When he’s hot, Johnson can fill it, with range. But…on the nights the jumper ain’t falling, he seems so disinterested in the game around him. Watching him on an off-night is like looking at a middle-aged man waiting for a bus.

They didn’t give up Brook Lopez and their first round pick right? So why can’t Dwight go there? Seems more to me like they’re awkwardly trying to create a “Big 3″
July 2nd, 2012 at 6:13 PM
Can they afford all 3? Johnson already has a crazy deal – are Williams/Howard going to take less $$ to play with Joe Johnson?

So the guy that gave Sam Dalembert 64M, is doing all kinds of crazy gm-ing again –> Least suprising thing ever.

Williams wants a max contract, and Dwight is owed 19 mill until next year. Unless Williams takes a severe pay cut, Howard’s not coming there. Howard needs to be lustily booed everywhere next year, this guy is an annoying jackass.

Howard and Harden in Phoenix next year. They can change their identities and start over.

This pretty much closes the door to Dwight to Nets. Would have to be a sign and trade, which ain’t happening.

This is all Billy King, who is the east-coast version of Elgin Baylor as a GM. Maybe worse.

The Nets don’t know what Williams is going to do, nor do they know what Orlando is going to do with Howard. Getting Johnson gives them someone to build around either in the event they lose Williams or an All Star backcourt mate to entice Williams to re up with Jersey. Good move on their part to not have themselves held hostage.

door 100% closed. Gerald Wallace & Joe Johnson + Deron Williams = no room for Dwight. I suppose Dwight could go if Deron doesn’t … but why would he do that?
July 2nd, 2012 at 7:10 PM
If you were a Nets fan, which one between Howard and Williams would you prefer they signed?
July 2nd, 2012 at 7:27 PM
Is there a worse guy for the Nets to sign to help keep DWill, outside of another true PG? A 20-dribbles-and-shoot SG who’s going to be a cap albatross for the next four years? Nice of the Nets to help Orlando solve their D12 problem though. Because you know, that Joe Johnson for a YMCA rec-league team deal might not have been there in two weeks.
July 2nd, 2012 at 7:32 PM
Rumor is that Orlando wouldn’t talk to NJ about Howard. My guess is that they are giving Dwight the big “Eff you”. Looks like Howard will go to Dallas, Lakers, Houston, or…Atlanta? Think about it, Howard is from the ATL, they can now trade Orlando Houston’s 1st(which they just got in this NJ deal), their 1st, a bunch of these NJ expiring contracts, and either Horford or J. Smith. They might even be able to take back a bad contract in Turkoglu.

terrible player. He has the audacity to be able to create his own shot off the dribble as well as on the catch. just terrible. That’s not the way Phog Allen coached the game.

I hope they enjoy constantly being the 5th seed in the east (assuming Indy keeps Hibbert). Williams, Brooks, Wallace, Johnson, Lopez, and…maybe humphries? Lopez is overrated and always injured. Wallace hasn’t been good in a few years, and Johnson can’t do anything but shoot.

Billy King is a moron. Trading a surefire lottery pick for a FA in Wallace. Then giving him 40 mil. Why not sign him as a FA anyway n keep the pick? It ain’t brain surgery.
