Anthony Davis Hurt, Unlikely to Make Olympic Team
Anthony Davis was drafted 1st by the Hornets Thursday, and four days later, Woj is reporting that the shot-blocking machine suffered an ankle injury and “almost assuredly” won’t play in the Olympics. Davis was being pegged as the backup to Tyson Chandler.
Some folks will chalk this up as “not a big deal,” but they’re ignoring the fact that Team USA has one true center. Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum and Chris Bosh will all miss the Olympics. Looking at the roster, that leaves … Kevin Love? Blake Griffin?
Yes, LeBron could play the power forward spot, and then you could rotate Love and Griffin at center, but are you confident they’ll get the job done defensively? I’m not.
At what point do you strongly begin to consider guys like DeMarcus Cousins? Greg Monroe (who isn’t even a center)? Marcus Camby?

Do they play defense in the Olympics ?

Greg Oden.

Austin Rivers’ sick crossover skills claim another victim.

Was Anthony Davis really expected to be that great of an Olympic center anyway?
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:08 PM
that’s like worrying about the somali air force. OH HEAVENS NO…NOT A SINGLE PASSENGER CESSNA.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:08 PM
According to NHLN, Suter will announce after Parise does….
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:10 PM
i didn’t think Latvia even had 5 players to start, i think the US will be just fine.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Is Roy Hibbert not a US citizen or something? He’d be a no-brainer.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:11 PM
… so that implies the same team?
Won’t be the Pens then.
FUCK YEAH WE GOT STEVE MACNTYRE LOCKED UP THOUGH!
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:12 PM
He is Jamaican.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Plays for the Jamaican national team. Way to think it through, Roy.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Same team? Minnesota?

July 2nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
I think if Parise ends up signing with Minny, Suter may follow him. If not Minny, Suter will go back to Nash or Detroit.

Weren’t there rumors that the Flyers were offering most money to both?

who’s working on jamaican hibbert a fake passport?
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Oops. He was even born in Queens, NY. (according to Wiki)
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Conflicting reports. It was probably 12 yrs 80-90 million. Flyers only have 10 mill in cap space anyways. And can only go 10% over the cap temporarily.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Possibly. Minny had the most to offer them both, so price was no object. That, of course, worries me
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM
No Jagr + moving Pronger to LTIR = over $13 mil in cap space

now that he’s hurt, maybe we can get him on the us paralympic team.

They don’t even play volleyball with a net!
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Wouldn’t be surprised if both were offered over 100 million. Wings offered Suter 12 yrs 90M. Don’t know about Parise. Once those two sign, Nash and Ryan should move in the next few days.

from what I understand, our volleyball team shoud beat britains, as their wheelchair’s suck.

Since everyone is forgetting, Spain is the team to worry about with (2) Gasols and Serge Ibaka in the front court.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:24 PM
If you believe Lou Nanne, the Wild did just that.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:26 PM
It seems like he will be docked for a some time.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Suter is from Wisconsin and played for the Baders. Parise is a Minny boy and both would be instant fan favorites. I think I have gotten about 6 texts today alone about the possibility of both guys coming to MN next year.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:27 PM
that was great.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Hibbert’s a Jamaican citizen because his dad is from there. He’s on their national team because he wanted to play in the Olympics and it didn’t seem very likely he’d be an option for the US back when the process started. Oh, well
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Whoa! Really?
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Seeing athletes represent nations they had NO real ties to really bothers me. It’s one thing if you moved to a country as a youngster and grew up there. But athletes switching allegiance simply to get on a Olympics team is really shitty thing to do.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:30 PM

July 2nd, 2012 at 1:39 PM
I have no problem with him playing for Spain, but he moved there when he was 15 or 16 so he could play professional basketball. It’s not like he’s been there since first grade.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Yes, this is what I mean. Have to move there before you were pegged as a potential athlete.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:47 PM
He was pegged (/no Coop) as a professional athlete before he was born…I guess conception in Spain was his only option.

July 2nd, 2012 at 1:52 PM
You do realize that he was born in Germany, right?
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Yes I do. Though I still find it hilarious that a Germany fan is giving anyone shit over nationality mixing on national teams. Poland will gladly take your strike force back.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Also this reminds me of David Regis. Possibly the biggest sham nationality trick ever pulled.
July 2nd, 2012 at 1:58 PM
And who the fuck are you to say someone has “NO” ties to a place?
July 2nd, 2012 at 2:02 PM
I guess people find random things “funny”. Podolski and Klose both moved to Germany when they were youngster. I don’t have any problem with them playing for Germany. I do have a huge problem with players like Cacau and Gerald Asamoah playing for Germany. They are not germans. They were granted german citizenship simply for the benefit of German national team. Those guys have no business playing for Germany. I feel the same way with Serge Ibaka, Lopez Lomong etc. irregardless of which country they choose to represent. I’m hardly claiming that Germany isn’t guilty of this just as much as any other countries.
July 2nd, 2012 at 2:06 PM
While I agree that there is certainly something cringe-worthy about athletes becoming citizens solely for sporting purposes, they’re still becoming citizens. Declaring someone “not German” or “not Spanish” just seems really wrong in a modern society where immigration is a reality that people can’t ignore.
Also I’m not sure how anyone familiar with Ibaka’s life story could possibly begrudge him taking Spanish citizenship. Monstrous.
July 2nd, 2012 at 2:06 PM
I find anyone who says “irregardless” to be hilarious.
July 2nd, 2012 at 2:09 PM
(Though I do understand the uniqueness of the German situation given their citizenship laws, which I find creepy as hell)
July 2nd, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Lot of pegging goin on in here.
July 2nd, 2012 at 2:14 PM
I have no problem with those athletes becoming citizens of those countries. Let them become citizens and enjoy every right that is allowed of them. However, I find it odd that in a competition where we are so hellbent on preventing cheating in form of performance enhancing drugs, we are allowing another form of cheating in hiring these plastic citizens to represent the country.
And yes, I realize this viewpoint is not in accordance with the flower power, one world, one blood, one race hippie shit. But that’s just the way I feel. Like I said, if someone moves to a country at a very young age, goes thru the natural citizenship process, and then decide to represent their adopted country, by all means, go ahead. But what I do have a problem with is these plastic “americans”, “germans”, “canadians” simply getting citizenship just so they can take part in international competition. It’s cheating. That might make me old fashioned, but I don’t care.
July 2nd, 2012 at 2:19 PM
I didn’t realize you were drawing a line between the citizenship itself and representing the national team. That makes more sense.
Though in practice that would be a difficult standard to impose I guess.

I don’t think anyone with any historical awareness, especially someone connected to Germany, would equate one world, one blood, one race with flower power hippie shit. Just dumb.

you can only have two citizenships, man. and Joan Rivers isn’t playing in the Olchimpics so plastic people aren’t even relevant to this discussion. you’re an idiot.
