NFL Moving Late Afternoon Kickoffs Back 10 Minutes
The NFL made a wise choice, catering to the television audiences and particularly those who purchase products like the DirecTV Sunday Ticket. According to John Ourand of Sports Business Daily, the NFL is moving back kickoff times from its 4:15 Eastern Time late afternoon games to 4:25, to reduce conflicts with the finishes of 1 pm games.
I had complained about this in the past, but I can assure you that this 10 minute move took some wrangling, particularly with NBC and its Sunday Night Football programming. A 10 minute move back means 10 more potential minutes into the Sunday Night pre-game.
The league is not moving the non-double header late afternoon games that went to local markets and started at 4:05 Eastern Time. However, with up to 10 early afternoon games, anyone who has tried to watch games on the Sunday Ticket package knows that at least one game is invariably an exciting finish and extends past 4:15. It seemed like a virtual certainty every week that I would miss a large chunk of the first quarter of the featured late game while an exciting finish occurred. With the new overtime rules going to the regular season, and the five minute explanation by the referees, more overlap was going to be inevitable. Now, there will be a little more time to watch the end of the best finish of the day and still catch the next game. First world problems, indeed, but an excellent implementation by the NFL.

Would’ve preferred games just start at 12:45 EST. Pregame is way too long.
June 28th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Agreed Lisk. It’s not too often the Pats get the late game, but when they do and I have to watch at a bar, I never get to see the first 10 minutes. But, seriously CBS, just move 60 Minutes to 8:00.

I like it

Can we move it 60 minutes?
But, seriously CBS, just move 60 Minutes to 8:00.
CBS would never do that. They get that automatic lead in from the games.

“just move 60 Minutes to 8:00″
Target audience is in bed by then. Either 6 p.m., about an hour and a half after the target audience eats dinner, or 4 a.m. when they wake up.

Fire users – I bought the Otterbox cover for mine. Now it weighs about 20 lbs. Wasn’t expecting that since the one for my i-phone doesn’t seem that heavy. With two kids under 6 using mine, I thought it was essential though.

can they move browns games to tuesday nights so i can watch good teams play?
June 28th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
An extra 10 minutes, for those who have all their scratch tied-up in the morning games and get inevitably locked-out of the afternoon games.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Now create a better balance of early and late afternoon games. Some weeks felt like there was eleven 1:00am games and three afternoon games.

What can be seen on Football Night in America can be seen hundreds of times over throughout the week on NFL Network, ESPN, NBCSN and various other sports outlets. Those who watch FNiA will keep watching it and those who don’t, won’t.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
They’re just lying to their audience then. The show will probably start around 8, but they’ll keep ‘scheduling’ it for 7.

God, I can’t wait for football to start.

Of course they are. They get the people that don’t care about football tuning in at the correct time and they get the football fans. Ratings. Sizzle.

Will someone get Lisk a babysitter so he can continue writing his QB projection posts? We were just getting to the breakout stars of 2012.

Don’t give up on the Phils just yet. There’s also the matter of July 1st and the NHL. Matt Carle is all but re-signed but you never know.
Penguins are giving Sid 12 years it sounds like. Seems like a big risk.

Holy fucking shit. Hope that screws them in the future

I’m sure Bettman will be sure slip in some protection clause for the Pens in the new CBA.

SC, I was reading through my twitter this morning and saw where my gf responded to one of your twits. I asked why she followed you and she said, “that’s nacho cheese hat guy”. you should be proud.

Is he just 100% better now?
June 28th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Whatever. I’m still gonna be muting MNF as long as Berman is involved.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Is he just 100% better now?
If he’s only healthy for 3-4 years, that contract is more than worth it for the Pens.
/Kypreos is reporting $104M / 12 years, $8.7M cap hit (which is equal to his current hit)

June 28th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
I mean, of course it’s a risk in terms of him developing chronic mushhead, but if that happens they put on LTIR* and it doesn’t negatively impact their ability to construct a team.
*assuming LTIR rules don’t change under new CBA
**If I was a betting man I’d wager new CBA includes clauses allowing buyout of injured players with minimized cap penalties.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:20 PM

Nantz continually apologizing every 10 minutes after 7:00 really lessens my 4th quarter viewing experience!!
June 28th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
What? I don’t care about LTIR, a player with that much chance to go vegetable at any moment is a big risk. He’s the best player in the world, but he’s got to be on the ice do show it. I wouldn’t want to be hamstrung by a $9M cap hit for 12 years. Why not just give him 6?
June 28th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Handle? I try to respond to all of my mentions*. Sometimes I miss a few.

Nicely done.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
What?
Return on Investment. He’s worth more to them than simply on-ice product. You think the new arena in Pitt gets built without him?
I wouldn’t want to be hamstrung by a $9M cap hit for 12 years. Why not just give him 6?
$8.7M cap hit, same as it is now. It’s likely a 10 year deal with 2 ‘false years’ (ala Hossa). Want to bet new CBA limits max term of contract as well as possibility for ‘false years’? A 6 year deal would mean a cap hit in excess of $10M.

Without Sidney Crosby, the Penguins are playing in Kansas City.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
He’s completely done, right? Every update I hear from his wife just sounds awful.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
I think so. He’s at the age where, the longer he’s away from the game, the harder it will be for him to come back.
Let’s put it this way: He’s not on any of the season ticket holder marketing material that I’ve received and I read a report that he’s been doing video review with the Flyers coaching staff this summer. Sounds suspiciously like Lappy’s career path with the Flyers after he took a puck to the eye.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Not sure what Pens local TV contract is worth, but Kings just signed new deal. Current CBA allows teams to keep their local tv money (i.e. they share CBC/NBC money).
June 28th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Yes. You know they have another player who won the Hart trophy this year, right?
June 28th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Hossa’s two “false years” fall when he’s age 41-42. Crosby will be 35 and 36 in his. I would think he plays past his mid 30s.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:39 PM

Point being, the ability to lower cap hit with those years is going to go away (or be very much minimized).

I see him in Canadian Tire, Bauer and other ads all the time.

The Supreme Court ruled this morning that it is unconstitutional for hockey chat to slop over onto an NFL post at TBL.
Sorry, folks, that’s just how ‘Murica wants it.
June 28th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
Point for me is there’s no denying Sid’s talent but there’s an inherent risk the Penguins took by signing him to such a lengthy deal. Especially if new CBA, for whatever reason, doesn’t mitigate that risk by allowing buyouts or other alternatives to injured players on long term deals.
How would that affect players under contract now that got injured like Savard? Can the Bruins use new CBA terms or since his contract was signed under the old CBA is he grandfathered in and the money/term is all guaranteed with the cap hit still squeezing the Bruins?
June 28th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
The Coyotes need to ad $15M to hit the cap floor. Jay Feaster on line one with a big defensive addition for you, Phoenix!

Financially, absolutely. In terms of salary cap – not so much (assuming Pens are operating near the cap).
Can the Bruins use new CBA terms
Too tough to say, big market teams (BOS, PHI, NYT, Pitt, Canadian teams) will push for it to apply to existing contract.
