Jordan Staal Was Traded During His Wedding
Jordan Staal got married on Friday, June 22, 2012 – the same day as the NHL Draft. Personally, if half my family played in the NHL, I don’t think I would schedule my wedding on the day of the NHL Draft. Especially if I was planning on turning down a 10-year contract extension. All of that applies to Jordan Staal and that is why he found out during his wedding that he had been traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Staal said that when he and his bride, Heather, planned their wedding they had no idea that the date was also NHL draft day. They certainly didn’t realize that it would also be the day he would leave the Penguins after six seasons to join a team that has his brother, Eric, as its captain.
Just seems like something you check before booking a venue. Jordan said that the prospect of being able to play with Eric factored into his decision to turn down the contract extension. Now he doesn’t need to make that decision. Brother March Staal is a Ranger and the youngest Staal brother, Jared, plays for the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate.
To recap, the Staal brothers were arrested after Eric’s bachelor party. Jordan got traded during his wedding. Marc didn’t have an incident surrounding his wedding, but just to be safe, when Jared settles down, maybe there should be more cameras present. [USA Today]

Pens got a pretty good deal for Staal. At 3 is the HoF announcement. Sakic and Shanny get in for sure. Can’t wait for July 1st.

June 26th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
July 1st is certainly going to be interesting
June 26th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Maybe his agent doesn’t leak the contract offer to TSN and it doesn’t happen. I hope it ruined his wedding.
Yup. Sutter is a perfectly fine replacement and better on faceoffs. Frees up a ton of money. Parise is going to look fantastic on Sid’s wing.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
It should be a pretty formidable combo for the 8 games it lasts.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I just don’t see that happening. Sutter, maybe.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
ibis, the link doesn’t work for me
June 26th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
They’re 15 million under the current cap. If they move Paul Martin they have more than enough room for both Suter, Parise, and then role players.
Parise wants to play with Sid.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Try this one
June 26th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Parise to the Wild. They will offer him 90 million +. I’m pretty confident Suter will be a Wing. That’s his preferred destination.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Parise wants to play with Sid.
/Coop?

June 26th, 2012 at 1:55 PM

nope. thanks anyway…i’ll just go get her outta bed, and have her jump up and down
June 26th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
I refuse to believe neither of those players have a desire to win.
Either way. Pens have a ton of cap space and have the best negotiating GM in the sport. You all should be shitting your pants.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
As much as I would like to see him on the Wild, I’m not sure if I’m going to like the contract they’re going to offer him.

June 26th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Suter will re-sign in Nashville after exploring his options.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
For now. You’ve two more UFAs to resign next two years.
Other question is does Parise want to be #3 on the list on a team?
June 26th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Parise’s a 6.5-7M cap player not 9M.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Pretty good chance they can resign both Sid and Malkin without increasing either’s cap hit more than 2mil a year. Plus Kunitz’s awful contract will be off the books when Malkin is up.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Who will take less to play with Crosby. Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Suter is going to be wearing the Indian head, sorry folks
Better dump a boatload of contracts prior to July 1.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
He was #1A on a team that just got its shit pushed in in the finals. If he has any interest in winning, he won’t try to be a #1 guy. He’s not that.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
is the suter player related to the suter coaching brothers?
zeus, how does the suter family fit into hockey-family history? they must be canadian legends
June 26th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Parise and Crosby are really good buddies (dating back to time at Shattuck). Parise will consider taking less to go to Pitt.
/Pens need to dump Fleury’s contract on some dumb GM
//preferably not Edmonton
June 26th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
For all of 2 games before he’s on shelf wondering where his keys are again.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Sounds about right. Wild will overpay, because they need to, but I think there’s too good of a chance that contract will bit them in the ass

Wings are picking up two Badgers and a enigmatic sputnik.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Ryan Suter, the defenseman for Nashville in question, is the nephew of Gary Suter, America’s greatest hero.
Brandon Sutter, the player the Penguins just traded for, is part of the Sutter Family.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
zeus, how does the suter family fit into hockey-family history? they must be canadian legends
Suter is not related to the Sutters, he is related to noted asshole Gary Suter though.
Sutter’s are legends in Alberta.

Got a great deal on that French Canadian lockdown goaltender. A real steal.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Nothing to do with his psyche. I meant he’s not a #1 guy in terms of talent. Which is why he’s not a 9mil player. Top line winger, but not a guy you want to make the centerpiece of your team and highest paid player if you’re trying to win.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Pens fans turn on players faster than Yankees fans.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
So the Blue Jackets are retarded.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Got a great deal on that French Canadian lockdown goaltender. A real steal.
Thou whost signeth Crisotbal Huet and liketh the contract for Pavelec shall not throweth the first goaltending stone.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Sid was their guest at the Final.
Not a goalie in the league who could have helped them with the defensive performance in the playoffs. Not a contract I like, but it’s not horrible.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Hey now to be fair I have always hated Kunitz. It’s not actually an awful contract I just hated giving him an extension. Dude is not a top line winger.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Tampering.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Not a contract I like, but it’s not horrible.
It’s horrible.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
You cannot be looking forward to what tire fire of a trade Tambo executes to clear one of those young forwards off the books in the next eighteen months.
A lot of this discussion is heavily dependent on the labor talks of course.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Awful contract. Also a Tallon contract. Same guy that gave Brian Campbell, a very good player, far too much money.
Just don’t see why the Penguins want to add a player like Parise when they have two scoring giants in Malkin and Crosby. They should be slotting in role players and $3-5M players to play with those two studs. Letang is also going to need to get paid here in a couple years. Save that money. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be having 4-5 $5M+ forwards on a roster.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
I thought Kunitz had a great year last year. Half of it played without the best player in the world centering his line. 61 points for $3.7ish million is pretty nice.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
I am starting to be Homer and his BBQ pig right now. It’s just a little up in the air! It’s still good!!
June 26th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
You cannot be looking forward to what tire fire of a trade Tambo executes to clear one of those young forwards off the books in the next eighteen months.
Draft floor rumours were Gagner + Paajarvi to Phoenix for Yandle. I’ll lost my shit if they do that deal. Awful.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Gotta be one of the more mishandled young players. He should totally have a role on the NHL club. Probably doing some bum slaying in the bottom six.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
That is a perfectly valid point.
You could go all in on Suter and leave room for Letang, get more role guys in there. At the same time, I think Shero is tired of guys like Tyler Kennedy and likes what he got out of Neal. Malkin turned a guy into a 40 goal scorer. Sid needs a guy he can do that with, that’s the thinking.
They are loaded with young defense coming through the system. You know how they’re going to be able to afford Letang? By getting rid of Orpik, who is sliding downhill kind of fast.
Going after Parise isn’t the only option, but it’s not a bad one, and for the first time in a while the Pens have several different options of how to approach free agency, it’s exciting.

I cannot pronounce the Blackhawks first selection’s name for the life of me. The Swedes have so much punctuation on their names.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Just don’t see why the Penguins want to add a player like Parise when they have two scoring giants in Malkin and Crosby.
Look at their 2012 draft and their current organizational prospect strength. They are loading up on young D (Depres, Morrow, Matta, Pouliot, Dumolin, Harrington) who they can keep on cheap contract while paying the likes of Crosby, Malkin, whomever.
I’d be terrifed of Pitt if I was in the East.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
He’s pretty damn good. Great value. I love a couple of the Wings picks. Hate the fucking goalie pick though.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Gotta be one of the more mishandled young players.
Totally wasted year. Should have been playing regular third line minutes. Their going to give up on him and he’s going to turn into a reliable top 6 forward averaging 20 goals a year.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
… Kunitz spent the majority of the year on Gino’s line, that’s not a very good argument.
He’s a perfectly serviceable player. On the second or third line. He’s not the guy Sid needs. He could be the OTHER guy on Sid’s line, but Crosby should not have to be playing with Dupuis and Kunitz on his wings.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Penner to the Penguins

Penner to the Penguins
Someone going to sign him on the cheap and next year all the talking heads will call it a steal.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
June 26th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
I just look at the last few Stanley Cup champs and I see the same thing that seems to be winning playoff hockey games. The ability to roll 4 lines up front has been crucial. Look at what the Kings got out of their bottom six. Hell, the Devils bottom six is probably why they got to the Final this year. The Bruins had full compliment of players up front last year. The Blackhawks depth in 2010 probably won’t be duplicated in the salary cap era. Same with DET and PIT the years prior.
Yeah, you definitely need competent goaltending (see Chicago) to advance as well. I’ve come around to a more balanced lineup up front though instead of the standard procedure of shortening your bench in the playoffs. My two cents.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
No thanks. Already have a couple of those.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
MP the “real steal” part of that was sarcastic, he was saying it’s horrible.
Fleury has the ability to win games by himself. He played way too many regular reason games and fell apart in the playoffs with the defense quitting on him (fuck Orpik’s positioning ability in the face). Vokoun will lighten the load by ten games. I’m not worried about goaltending this year.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I’d like the Wings to look into Prust, maybe Tootoo. Need to strengthen the 4th line. Cut ties with the borderline players on the roster.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Excellent trade. Really wish the Hawks would have explored that option instead of another year of Ray Emery. They signed Razor to an extension way too early. If Bowman has a flaw, I think that’s the one.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Any teams want a slightly used Dany Heatly?
June 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
SC that was his point though. With the young defense coming up in the next two years they’re likely to find ways to shed Martin and Orpik, which means they can afford Letang and another FA defenseman and then not have much money tied up in defense elsewhere, be able to sign the big forwards, and then have role guys.
For the third line you’ve got Sutter, Cooke, Kennedy/Sullivan and the fourth Adams, Vitale, Jeffrey, Tangradi (lol) and other fourth line kind of guys. I’m not worried about grinder depth whatsoever.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Fleury has the ability to win games by himself.
Over the last two seasons, 37 goaltenders have two qualifying seasons – Fleury ranks 27th in even strength save percentage.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Hope you enjoy bad stick work and lots of giveaways at the defensive blue line, as well as clearing attempts to the middle of the ice that almost make it out of the defensive zone.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Well that’s embarrassing. And indicative of my level of hockey knowledge.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
No but we will take some spare parts for MN native Paul Martin.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Sutter is the perfect player for the way Pitt’s roster is contructs (and the way I anticipate it will be going forward). He’s one of the best defensive fowards in the league.

June 26th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
I know the stats, and this past regular season was a lot better than before, but I mean that when he gets in his game he can absolutely win games on his own. I’ve seen him steal many games, and I’ve also seen him lose his share on his own. With Vokoun pushing him I feel better about it. If he were making 1.5 million less a year I’d feel even better though, yes.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:28 PM

Holmgren must drink heavily on June 23 every year.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
I hope this isn’t the case. The Blackhawks are set on defence. They need to move Hjalmarsson but that’s it. They need a goalie if they don’t land Suter (they won’t).
Which is why I was hoping for a Dave Bolland for Staal swap. Solves our 2nd line center need while solving their need for a defensive 3rd line center.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
That was a good trade for both teams.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Did Bob Suter cripple Wayne Gretzky? No. Fuck Bob Suter, Gary all day.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:29 PM

June 26th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Which is why I was hoping for a Dave Bolland for Staal swap. Solves our 2nd line center need while solving their need for a defensive 3rd line center.
It would have taken Bolland, Olsen and the Hawks 1st/2nd round picks plus they may have had to eat another bad contract from Pitt. Too much for a guy who was going to sign in Carolina next summer anyway.

Then, I remembered how tissue paper soft JVR can be sometimes and saw that Schenn was only 22 and I felt a little better.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Probably 6M cap hit.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Take either Olsen or the 1st round pick out and I would have done it. Providing he signed an extension. Jordan got his Cup but why he wants to play in Carolina is beyond me. Hockey purgatory.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
I’d still rather have Pittsburgh’s goalie situation over Philly’s.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
What I meant was I thought Holmgren should have gotten Schenn plus a draft pick for JVR.
The Flyers off season activities will drive me to drink heavily, perhaps.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Modifed NTC, but not effective until he hits UFA years of service, think 2015 or 2016.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
I see this complaint all over the place and it’s just dumb.
No young player says “No” to a shit load of money because they might get traded. And Paul Holmgren has made those players very wealthy. In some cases, before they deserved it (looks at JVR).
No right minded agent would suggest that a player turn down money for fear of getting traded.
