I had no idea that schools banned the use of sunscreen. Unbelievable. A sign of the times, I guess…
June 25th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
I had a buddy that could do this in high school. I don’t think I paid for a soda all of senior year.
June 25th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
Seriously.

School Sunscreen Ban Leaves Student Severely Sunburned
Headline should read: “Stupid Parents Blame School For Their Own Neglect and Ignorance”

Props to the girl for making a somewhat half-hearted attempt to walk in the water and get close enough to the frenzy.

miss maryland earned a $10k scholarship for winning? what the fuck kind of precedent does that set?
“here lil lady…here’s a scholarship rewarding you solely for your good looks. nevermind that you probably come from a very wealthy family, since nobody else would waste money on a fucking beauty pageant, and you’re probably only functionally literate, but yea! scholarship!”
liquidate all of them.

Walking 18 was not a good idea Saturday. It was 102F when I left the 18 green and still about 70-80% humidity.

Makes a lot of sense. Baby Boomers were the last generation to really enjoy the middle class before it began to erode. The fact that the income gap between 65+ and under-35 is wider than it’s ever been hammers that home. We’re winning socially but losing financially.
June 25th, 2012 at 8:48 AM

Good close from that generation gap piece:
What seems clear is that the marketing gurus are finally right: today’s young really are different. They view a boisterously diverse United States as a fact of life, and they view life as clearly better than it used to be. But they are also products of the longest economic slump in 70 years, and they would like a little help. They wish the country would devote more attention to its future, especially on education and the climate. They, of course, will have to live with that future.
June 25th, 2012 at 8:50 AM
Let me get this straight. State law prohibits kids applying their own sunscreen due to possible allergenics. If you have a doctor’s note on file, then you are allowed to. Meanwhile, dumb mom is willfully ignorant of this and blame the school for following the law. Obviously, it’s the school’s fault.
June 25th, 2012 at 8:50 AM
Walking 18 was not a good idea Saturday.
Glad you’re alive. I went to the range on THUR and worked to correct my driver issues. Corrected one flaw and made one posture change and am hitting them on a string. After doing some trips the past few weekends I am looking to golf a ton in July. Played nine late yesterday. The dry fairways gave me a 340 yard drive.
June 25th, 2012 at 8:55 AM

Suddenly the generation gap thing seems pretty justified.

Does this mean you have to commit the child’s life to baseball at age 9 and join a year-round traveling team that plays out of town 30 weekends each year?
Because a lot of the parents in my neighborhood do that and I say “hell no” to the single sport child.

“only” about 95 here saturday and I didn’t walk. I was nursing a touch of a whiskey hangover and hadn’t showered from the night before. my buddy I played with shot his best score ever (77) as well. not sure how he pulled that off.

Just took a look at the site and some of the tourneys…..holy shit, single game elimination with a 104 team format. you better have some studs on your team to travel there and compete. hotels around the area probably make a killing on these weekends.

the generation gap is back!
I wonder where they did their data research. Cause living in the South, I can tell you that we are breeding the next generation of social, fiscal and cultural conservatives. These will be folks who don’t necessarily care for a multi-cultural Amurika or for gay marriage or for the government to help the “welfare moms.”

I think the point is that this backwards-thinking group will become a smaller and smaller minority, especially as white people make up less and less of the population.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
English have some nerve calling Pre-Loew German teams “dour, machine-like” when they’ve been stinking up international tournaments with their shit football for 80 years.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Need Italy to pull out a miracle vs Germany. But not as big a miracle as I need Portugal to come up with.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
Let’s also not forget how we had no internet to turn to get hot and cold running pornography. We had to steal shitty Playboys from older relatives.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
That game yesterday was embarrassing. England looked like the Mark Sanchez of international futbol — unable to hold onto the ball or complete even a basic two-yard pass. I understand the injuries and personnel issues, but there’s no excuse for a performance like that.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
For those that don’t care, wedding was a blast. I think I may have been the guy grandparents pointed their fingers at and told others I was having too much fun. Knoxville’s the best.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Does this mean you have to commit the child’s life to baseball at age 9 and join a year-round traveling team that plays out of town 30 weekends each year?
None of my kids have ever been single sport kids.
I had the same impression you have when my oldest was at this stage and regret it. Especially since he might be the better athlete overall.
Our team plays nearer to 50 games per year. He’s been on the same team for age 10, 11 and now 12. Before that all-stars at age 9 which is really light.
It helps that a team-mate lives across the street. Unfortunately, his father works for a professional sports team and is overwhelmed, so I do most of the transportation. It also helps that we have a good group of parents – not all teams have that, and end up with 3-4 player turnover each year which is not good.
He also plays football. He doesn’t play a winter sport and uses that time in the batting cage.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
AP, why the Inception hate.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Gotcha, I understand, law of supply and demand. I just can’t believe it’s single game elimination, you’d think with the amount travel/time, etc for these teams, you’d get a 2-game, 3-game minimum. My boy plays pony ball and we had a recent tourney about 45 min. from my town & we got a 4-game minimum and the entry fee was $800. wonder what the fee is for these tourney at Coop.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Not really concerned about the fact that we’re winless in 9 tournament games against the Italians. If we lose, that only means we weren’t good enough to win the tournament anyways. The gulf in talent is there for everyone to see. Player for player, Germany is better all across the field. If you can’t beat them when we have the better players, 2 extra days of rest, and the fact that your opponent had an extra-time game, then you didn’t deserve to be crowned champion anyways.

out of town 30 weekends each year?
Man – I just re-read that – 30 weekends per year. I don’t know any teams that play that many tournaments. We max out at about 8-10
I just looked at our games – we’ve played 66 games, going back to Feb.

$800 for a baseball tournament? No wonder baseball isn’t popular amongst lower-income neighborhoods.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
sounds like you gave it two days too long.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Holy shit this traveling league baseball sounds unbearable. These kids have to despise baseball by the age of 13 and start on a lifetime of designer drugs. What is the benefit of all this baseball? Depriving kids of their summers?
June 25th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
Sure. You paying the costs of getting my family and I there to see said team, and to pay all the various fees and costs for said travelling team?
Otherwise, I’m food with seeing Cooperstown on my own terms, thanks.
Fundraisers took care of 90% of our team costs – and I’m not talking about selling donuts or coupons door-to-door. We put on a couple of baseball tournaments with skills competitions and had a blast doing it.
My costs included flying my wife and kid there and a share of house rental for the week. Totally worth it – while I stay here and toil away to pay for it.
Lotsa cheap skates out on this site.

Horrible picture. What did she do to herself? It looks like she smoked crystal meth for a month and lost all the weight in her face and tits.
for fans of the old show, ‘Sports Night‘
As much as I like ‘West Wing,’ I think ‘Sporst Night’ was better.
Dan LeBatard enjoyed Miami’s title.
LeBron may still be an incredible cocksucker, but LeBatard at least puts a smile on my face about this whole thing.

June 25th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
I envy you, I really do. I don’t have enough stuff to make it worth hiring movers. Plus what sucks more is I am helping to move my roommates and we said we would help move our new landlord out of the house we are getting. I didn’t know she ended up belonging on an episode of hoarders and that none of her shit would be packed up.

wonder if they’ll still put the “made for” shafts in there…that annoys the hell out of me. pay $400 for a new driver and get a shaft painted like a premium one that plays completely different. if it’s a different shaft, don’t call it a kai’li or a voodoo or whatever.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
This. Kids today don’t experience summer the way we used to when we were kids (late 70′s – early 80′s). We used to get up in the morning, Mom would give us a couple of chores, and then you were out the door until supper time. Come home for supper, eat and then back out until 9-10pm, running around playing flashlight tag or something. I think they are missing out on a lot.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
na…show’s already online tho. checking it out after my 930 conf call.
my cuz went tho.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:32 AM
I can’t get down with this. West Wing is probably a top-10 drama of the last 25 years and is certainly one of the best dramas to ever on network television. Sports Night was good, West Wing was great.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:32 AM
Thanks for clearing that up, I didn’t see that.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Your setlist was weak, standard Tweezer Reprise closer, but still looked solid. Consensus is the show here was the best since they reformed. Closed with Lizards.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:35 AM
holy shit…that’s a treat. i dont have a version of that on any of their live shows i got.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:36 AM

i got my RBZ driver reshafted and played yesterday, wow. i cant believe what a difference a shaft makes.
btw- rbz’s stock shaft is crap.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
LOL, that’s good. Got burned one time with a friend who helped me clear a small area of yard (cut out grass, rocks, etc) to make additional room for a paved parking area at my house. Said he needed me to help him move his brother out of a rental t college. No problem I said, come to find out we had to a haul a coin operated slate pool table out his basement. Up a flight of steps and out to the back of truck. That fockin sucked.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:37 AM

June 25th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
It’s on Live Phish 2.
One of my friends from NY (that runs a glass blowing shop up there) came down for the show and brought with him a bunch of psilocybin extract. Sadly I could not partake because I had to drive, but I’m getting into that next weekend, should be a good time.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:38 AM

June 25th, 2012 at 9:38 AM

Let us hope so.
English have some nerve calling Pre-Loew German teams “dour, machine-like” when they’ve been stinking up international tournaments with their shit football for 80 years.
Never underestimate the English desire to retain their relevancy. Last night they were talking on SSN how they hadn’t been as dour even though every measurable stat showed they had been dominated and, but for Italy’s failure in front of goal, they would have been spanked.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Anyone who wants you to move a pool table in any direction but horizontal without warning you first should have to stick their dick in the corner pocket and let everyone helping take one shot from the break spot. Fuck that shit.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Can Justin Gatlin hang with Usain Bolt at the Olympics?
No.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
This. Plus, I think you want a professional to get it set up in the new location to make sure everything is right.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
No.
i cant see that link, but gatlin’s top gear with a perfect start will get a 9.68-9.79. Bolt, who has a race day pace no one can match, will be 9.58-9.65. That 4/10s difference is alot in the 100.

The ignorance of all this is pretty incredible.
This is exactly how my kids live during 85% of the summer. They’re not practicing every night and day. My kid actually asks me to take him to the batting cage or to field flies/grounders if the evening is looking quiet.
Oh yeah – we live in a subdivision that isn’t completely built out. So what did the kids do with a quad of unfinished lots? Made a baseball field.
Travel baseball kids do nothing ever except practice and play games with coaches all around. Yeah – that’s it. I stand corrected.

It’s a tradeoff, your friends like you more but now you have broken/nicked/scratched possessions.
When I moved to Boston it was into a 4th floor walkup. Gave the moving guys a HUGE tip.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
The benefit of travel league baseball is earning a scholarship by learning and playing against the best. My mom, bless her heart, drove me everywhere to play until I could drive and I was lucky enough to earn a scholarship to play. Made it all worth it for her. Not to mention friendships for life that you gain.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Re moving, anyone had to move for their elderly parents? I dread the day they get old and have to move out of their house. I suppose you could hire movers but typically the stuff is being divided up so it’s not being taken to one location.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Just the tip?
June 25th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Mole – that second set from the Atlantic City show was a non-stop run. Love going to shows like that. When I wake up in the morning and get the Live Phish download, I always check to see how many “>”‘s there are first, then what the sets looked like. That AC show will be downloaded soon, as well as the Chicago 94 box set pre-order.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
No doubt Jessica’s baby is well fed.
That whole process is extremely interesting. My wife’s would balloon up like some kind of circus act near feeding time and it was a site to see.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:51 AM

I have no argument with this, but here I sit.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Re moving, anyone had to move for their elderly parents?
My wife is doing this now with her dad. Organizing piles of crap.
Went there for the first time Friday to pick up some nice pieces of furniture for us. My kids and I were thumbing through the piles like it was American Pickers.
Empty house, few lights. The phone rings (old style bell ringer). Then this creepy little music box suddenly kicked on. We packed up and got the hell out. No lie.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Hell is (moving) other people.
For me it was lifting and hanging sheetrock when my whole body is wrecked from a night of drinking.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Yeah the only break in our second set was between Seven Below and Bouncing, granted that’s a big changeup in tempo.
Girlfriend’s brother flew in for the show, he went to all the AC shows and was talking about how awesome that night was. I’ll be downloading them when I get home today.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
My wife is currently breast feeding our 2-month old. Her’s are awesome. She put on a summer dress to go do some shopping yesterday. I was doing some yardwork (/pours one out for yardwork) when she came out of the house to leave. It was all I could do to not jump her right there.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
My girlfriend’s mom sold her house in NY so we’ve been going back every weekend for the last month to help pack (save this past weekend). Next weekend is the last run, that’s when we’re moving all the furniture to her new house.
Orchestrating a move from 350 miles away is not fun.

Urinal–I tweeted this to Spence yesterday, but I got an ass-whipping of epic proportions yesterday on the course. Shot 70 on 72/7000 yard course. 5 birds, 3 bogeys. And was NEVER in the match. Sometimes I hate this stupid game.

if he choses, he can break the 400 WR.
I’m not so sure if he can keep up that pace beyond the 200. You’re talking 21 and 22 splits to break 43.18
June 25th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
That seems like an incredible waste of time and money. Plus, she must live in a fucking mansion if it’s taking you a month to pack.

June 25th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
has he seriously run one? I’d be curious to see how he handled the second curve.
i dont think so. i assume he would go at the second curve like it was a 200-hug the outside for the first 50 and work to the inside to get the slingshot you want for the final 100.
June 25th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
I hate you because you shot 2 under.

that thing was too light, and whipped like crazy. everything was sky high.

GC – those are the worst days ever
. You run to tell someone, and when you get there, they are reveling in a round that was 5-7 shots better than yours.
Got some R11 irons on order. Hit 100 balls at a fitting on Saturday, and it was a close-your-eyes-and-choose situation between the R11′s, Mizuno JPX-800′s, AP1′s and G20′s.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Yeah, this. That third turn really kills the 200 runners. Their bodies just aren’t conditioned for that type of extra distance.

The benefit of travel league baseball is earning a scholarship by learning and playing against the best. My mom, bless her heart, drove me everywhere to play until I could drive and I was lucky enough to earn a scholarship to play. Made it all worth it for her. Not to mention friendships for life that you gain.
The scholly part isn’t even in the equation for us. We ask him every year if he wants to continue – it’s his decision.
I previously had the same impression a lot of folks here have about travel baseball being out of balance. I was wrong.

“Worst generation ever.”
We are just starting one of the largest transfers of wealth ever, only it’s the younger generations transferring money to the old farts. And no one, neither Dems nor Reps, is seriously attempting to address this calamity.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Yeah, but did you carry your bag? That’s the only way I’ll be impressed.
I shot 84 from 6600 and could’ve been 79-80 if a few putts fall.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Well she’s lived in the house for over thirty years and raised three kids there, you ever helped a parent move in that situation? Everything has a story and it takes forever. But it’s only been done on the weekends because she works during the week.
Also blow me.

Hiring movers last December was some of the best money I’ve ever spent. 4 little mexicans showed up and cleared me place out faster than I could have ever imagined.

Not really sure what Congress can do to address it.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Yes, I realize it’s only on weekends. But even 3-4 weekends is too fucking long to pack that shit. Memories my ass. There’s not a single jabroni in this world that I would help pack over a month. Especially one who lives hundreds of miles away.

Speaking of golf, I start my lessons this week. Really need work with me short game…. and my putting, driving, chipping, etc. I need work on my entire game.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Maybe some economic gurus in here could validate this, but isn’t a large issue not with job creation (compared to the past) but that old people aren”t retiring at the same clip. They are clogging up higher salaried jobs and preventing vertical progress for currently employed people and corresponding entry positions down the line?
June 25th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Like I joined a monestary over here.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
No argument on that but not sure what to do about it.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Squawk–
I’m kind of at that crossroads now. My oldest just turned 9 and will be in the U9′s next year, and that’s when it splits to recreational versus competitive next year in our community. The team we are on with some friends of my wife’s is brutal, no way these kids can go competitive, and he wants to try out for other teams. I’m just worried about time commitment. He wants to play in tournaments, he told me, and wants to win.

June 25th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
When my wife was breastfeeding, she constantly wanted me to massage her biscuits, to which I always would. The end result wasn’t always sex, but I’d say 3/4 of the time it ended up with a romp. Offer to give her a rub down brah.

End the Bush Tax cuts, cap tuition and CEO pay, raise the minimum wage, tighten internetship laws with penalties for exploitation. Wages have been stagnant since the 70′s whilst CEO pay is up to 400 to 1 employee versus 30 to one in the middle class golden age. Cut government spending in times of prosperity build a surplus for public work projects and stimulus hiring during down times.

You said your girlfriend’s mom. If it was my parents, sure. But only for my parents. And that’s only after exhausting every other options, including taking few days off from work and packing everything in one fell swoop rather than over a month. Or hiring extra help to expedite the process.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Awesome!
June 25th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
The bright side is that she drives because she drives faster than I do, so I get to sleep in the car. But yeah. Pittsburgh to ‘cuse is terribly boring.

Patience. Sometime around 2-3 months in she can resume banging. Not saying its easy to get back in the groove, just keep pushing for it and it will happen eventually (/Big Ben’d)

We’re using free labor this weekend though. All her brothers’ friends are coming with moving trucks to take the furniture.

Too much spin on the non-tour RBZ.

Of course. Golf is for walkers, unless it’s some BS scramble.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
I graduated in April…found a job in early June, so I didn’t have horrible luck with employment (thanks to 1.5 years of co-op experience). However, I can tell you that even entry level jobs require “3-5 years experience” in the job market today. This is partially because there are a lot of qualified applicants who are now unemployed, and also because of the reasons you stated regarding retirement. I’m not sure about the states, but they raised the retirement age in Canada to 67.

It is a tough decision. Getting him noticed is important.
My kid is not a “tryout” kid. He looks like the 1 million other kids in the park. But he’s fast as lightning, has a very consistent bat and can track anything in CF. No one would know this unless they saw him play 15+ games. It was important to get him on a rec team that would notice it. He was the best hitter on the county rec champ team at age 9 so it worked out for him.
Our park goes: rec -> all star -> travel -> up the travel ladder (A – Majors.)
If you can get him on an all-star team (1-3 tournaments in spring) that’s a good way to see what it takes.

June 25th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I’d be on board with all of that, but for different reasons. I don’t think those measures will necessarily increase middle-class wages or prevent older Americans from staying in jobs longer. I do think it makes general economic sense, though.

Lisk – start talking to the coaches of the current competitive teams and get a feel for what their goals are.
If a guy says he wants to do more than 15 tourneys a year, he’s not being realistic. What you want to do is max out at 2-3 tourneys in fall and then average 1-1.5 per 3 weekends from Feb – May then plan on a major tournament in June (beach vacation kind of thing). If he’s planning on more than 8 tourneys in the spring, he doesn’t really get it.
Then look at everyone’s schedule in July/Aug and see what the families are willing to do.

One more thing… if you can find an older coach (maybe doing this with his second, third kid) – I guarantee he gets it.
Our coach has a HS kid that just got a scholly to play Div III and he has a lot of knowledge and experience.
June 25th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
4-game minimum and the entry fee was $800
That’s incredibly expensive – our tourneys here generally max at near $400.

School Sunscreen Ban Leaves Student Severely Sunburned
Headline should read: “Stupid Parents Blame School For Their Own Neglect and Ignorance”
To be fair, that happened in my town and we’re not used to sun. But seriously, this bitch has been on TV ever since. What I don’t get is the media play on it, they got sun burns, big deal, who gives a shit? It happens. And, if anything, how about the mom get in trouble for raising such a fat little kid. What is worse for health? Sun burn or childhood obesity?
