What the hell does this mean? If ND joined a conference, their mediocre performance on the field would be somehow more palatable to fans because they could commiserate with their mediocre conference brethren? You’re right, though, ND does stand alone. Which is why at the recent negotiations regarding a bowl playoff system, you had all the major conference presidents, and NDs president. ND staying independent has absolutely nothing to do with on field performance.

If I’m a stud at any position I’m most concerned about the coaching staff’s ability to turn me into an NFL player, so I’d be looking at their success in doing so for past players at my position. If a staff has a history of producing NFL DBs I’m going there, regardless of climate.
