What Does the Wizards-Hornets Trade Mean For the NBA Draft?
The Wizards inexplicably shipped Rashard Lewis and his expiring contract to the Hornets in exchange for Trevor Ariza and Emeka Okafor. It’s a puzzling trade, but one that will certainly have an impact on the NBA draft next week.
The Hornets are expected to buy out Rashard Lewis and his $23 million contract (he’ll pocket $13.7 million according to one report), leaving them with a) massive cap room and b) a shell of a roster. Chris Kaman’s a free agent. So is Carl Landry. Neither is expected to return. Clearly, the Hornets’ plan is to build around Anthony Davis, overpay Eric Gordon, and then target whatever free agents they can next year (Andrew Bynum? Chris Paul?). I’ll still hold out hope they make a run at Deron Williams this summer, just so that post can look prescient. The Hornets also have the 10th pick in the draft, and unless they get Deron Williams, they’ll be back in the lottery next June.
I got several tweets Wednesday saying this was a big win for Washington. I saw Mike Wilbon on PTI give this deal an “A.” Disagree. Why take on Okafor (two years, $27 million left) and Ariza (two years, $14 million; player option for the 2nd year), who are overpaid anyway? Why not just waive/buy out Lewis? This could mean that the Wizards actually like the idea of a frontline comprised of Nene, Okafor, and Ariza. (They’ve got to amnesty Andray Blatche, right?) I’m just not sure two lumbering big men blend in well with one of the NBA’s fastest point guards. Plus, you just drafted Jan Vesely last year. When does he get a chance? This is a poorly built team that will once again struggle to score. Defensively, they’ll be improved.
Which leads us to the draft. It’s still unclear what the Bobcats will do with the No. 2 pick, but the Wizards are picking 3rd and you’d have to think a) they hope Brad Beal falls to them; b) if Beal isn’t available, is Harrison Barnes the guy? The only issue with that – they’ve got Ariza and last year’s 1st round pick, Chris Singleton at the position. Vesely – reminder: This is his girlfriend – can play the 3/4. Barnes obviously has more upside than those guys, but how many players can you be giving big money to who are rotting on the bench?
Here’s a scenario: The offensively-challenged Bobcats take Brad Beal 2nd. What do the Wizards do with the 3rd pick? They need a shooting guard – Jordan Crawford’s more of a 6th man than a starter, seeing as he does nothing but shoot – so do they grab Jeremy Lamb, Dion Waiters or Austin Rivers 3rd? Unlikely. The smart move would be to slide down 3-4 spots, perhaps acquire a 2nd round pick next year, and then take Lamb/Waiters/Rivers. Somebody will want to trade up for Barnes.
As for the Hornets, Anthony Davis + Austin Rivers at 10 would be an enormous haul; I think Anthony Davis + John Henson at 10 would be a great tandem, perhaps solidifying their PF/C combo for years. What about Royce White at 10? Too early?

There’s nothing inexplicable about it. The guy sucks and his contract was an albatross.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:01 PM
This was a retarded trade for the Wizards, and shows how little thought people like Wilbon put into their NBA “analysis”
June 21st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
The Pistons will take him.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Why would they want to keep Gordon and draft a shittier version of him? Seems like if you are keeping Gordon and looking for an actual PG you take Marshall.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:08 PM
How much would it have cost the Wizards to buy out Lewis’ contract? $13.7 million is for the Hornets, could be different from the Wizards. He’s owed $23M next year.
vs.
Okafor – $13.5M and $14.5 in each of the next two; Ariza – $7.3 and $7.8 in each of the next two, assuming he flexes his option. That’s $21M and $23M respectively.

Seriously, JMac, keep stitching a clown suit for yourself. Lewis is an expiring contract and okafor/ariza are immediate improvements.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:08 PM
Ten years after they could’ve had him in the draft.

The Wiz are going to draft Beal or MKG. They take whoever the bobcats pass on.

Two useful pieces or a draft pick and a oft-injured money pit? Such a tough decision…
June 21st, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Do not want.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Lewis is an expiring contract and okafor/ariza are immediate improvements.
Improvements for what? To maybe get the 8th seed? And that is worth tying up your entire cap for the next two years?

I like that Kobe is the focal point of the picture used for a post about the Wizards/Hornets trade.

Okafor has played on some really shitty basketball teams in his NBA career.

So keep a person who wont play for you and continue not making the playoffs or get a couple guys who will immediately contribute and compete for a playoff spot? Now washington just needs to unload Blatche
June 21st, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Its basically an argument in team building. A lot of teams covet cap space and thats why Jason is ripping them. I actually like the trade for Washington because its not like with cap space they will be able to bring in any amazing pieces.
The argument of Okafor and Ariza being overpaid is funny because if you bring in free agents with cap space chances are you are overpaying. The fact of the matter is that a lot of players are overpaid.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Priorities.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I disagree. Okafor and Ariza are okay players, but they’re not that great. The Wizards are a mess. They need a lot of help, and this doesn’t help them much. You know what would’ve helped? All that cap space.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I think you’re overestimating the skills of Okafor and Ariza, both who are overpaid, and underestimating the cap room they lost. This trade cost the Wizards 30 million dollars, and 22 million alone on their cap next year.

June 21st, 2012 at 1:17 PM
I think you are overestimating what a franchise like the Wizards can do with cap space.

Know why okafor works? He plays defense. Know who doesnt? Most of the wizards currently on the roster
June 21st, 2012 at 1:21 PM
I think you are overestimating what a franchise like the Wizards can do with cap space.
I guess it comes down to whether you prefer bottoming out and building back up, or consistently maintaining a 7th-10th conference ranking with no hope of improvement. If they want to stay in that range, more power to em.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Confucius say: “What’s the point of cap space, if no one will come to DC as free agent?”
June 21st, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Remember when John Wall was going to make “the leap” this year because he was dunking over high school players and And-1 dropouts in the summer league?
June 21st, 2012 at 1:23 PM
This exactly. As does Ariza. A great deal? Fuck no, but it’s not inexplicable. Now they can use the amnesty on Blache instead of Lewis, and got a couple of at least somewhat competent pieces for him.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Yep. I agree. Just because the team has it, doesn’t mean FAs want the Wizards’ cash.
We’ve seen this in recent years with the Denvers, Memphis’s, etc. If you’re not a marquee team or in a locale where players want to live (ATL, southern Cali, South Beach), cap space isn’t as quick a fix as one might think.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Finally registered to respond to this one.
The reason the Wizards did this is because NEXT year’s free agent class is WEAK. They don’t want to commit long term money to overpay a poor free agent crop. This sets them up for big cap space in summer 2014.
That’s why this move is savvy. The Wizards have no intention of winning next year.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Where was John Wall drafted again? They did bottom out. Lets not act like bottoming out is a quick fix or guaranteed results.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Jorge Arangure, doing work.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Washington has already started rebuilding. Over the past couple years, theyve ridded themselves of Arenas, Young, McGee, and Lewis…and as Buck said, they can amnesty Blatche because he is basically untradeable. They have some good young players who improved as the season went on. Charlotte is now the team bottoming out
June 21st, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Nobody worthwhile wants to play for the Nets or Knicks either, though.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Ariza sucks, but Okafor is good. This won’t change their draft plans at all.
Hopefully they pass on MKG, though.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:29 PM
He is a primary example of why not to overpay a role player from a championship team.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:29 PM
One of these is not like the other two.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:30 PM

June 21st, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Seeing how much dumb money they were willing to throw at Joe Johnson, I certainly would listen to their offer.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:31 PM
I agree. He has Tyson Chandler on the 2011 Mavs capabilities and can be a season-changer with the right team. I feel sorry for him because he’s essentially been traded from one crappy team to another.

They basically gave up 2013 cap space for a chance to compete for a playoff spot next year and 2014 cap space. Maybe they can compete a little the next 2 years and convince a FA to then come into town. Wall will be more seasoned and maybe Jan/Singleton/Booker/Crawford progress some. Had they stood pat, I doubt they would have convinced a FA to come in 2013 after going 20-62. Also, if they amnesty Blatche it isn’t going to happen until the 2014 summer (by that time he will be an ever-valuable expiring contract) because doing it now (or next summer) does nothing for them.

Maybe ‘Melo didn’t really want to go to the Knicks. After all, he was helping his wife’s career.

June 21st, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Still thinks he won’t reach anywhere near his potential without a rigid coach and team culture.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Dwight’s #1 option is the Nets. Deron has expressed interest in staying in Brooklyn. Melo wanted to go to the Knicks, so did Lebron (though he was just flirting). Steve Nash is strongly considering the Knicks this year. JR Smith signed with the Knicks, so did Tyson Chandler.
/ what?
June 21st, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Mitch needs to be dealing for all he’s worth to get Deron in LA. Lakers are in trouble as currently constructed.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:52 PM
If you’re not a marquee team or in a locale where players want to live (ATL, southern Cali, South Beach), cap space isn’t as quick a fix as one might think.
I think it’s more that players want to go to good organizations and/or play with their friends.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:55 PM
I’d like to see how that is possible
June 21st, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Instead they’ll just look to extend Ramon Sessions, and waste one of Kobe’s two to three decent years left.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:56 PM
So what you’re saying is, suddenly the Knicks are loaded?
Can they even afford Nash on a end of his career veteran salary?
The Nets have lots of hypotheticals up in the air but there’s still a solid chance they end up with zero superstars and a lot of money on the table in a market that was supposed to change everything. Lebron was supposed to jump at the chance to play in NYC. Just don’t think the market has as much to do with it anymore.
Other than for people who have no interest whatsoever in winning. Like Dwight Howard.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Ah, but remember how people used that same highlight film to prop up Austin Rivers for crossing Wall, even though Wall yacked Rivers on the next possession?
June 21st, 2012 at 2:00 PM
i thought john wall was pretty good…no?
June 21st, 2012 at 2:03 PM
You can always sign someone on a minimum salary. They may have a mid-level exception around $5M, but that depends how an arbitration hearing rules regarding Lin and Novak’s contracts.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Ground truth. This does happen, more than fans would like to admit. It will happen again.
Some cats just wanna get paid. Period.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:04 PM
First you need a time machine to go back 4 months and try to trade for Deron. If that doesn’t work you have to amnesty Kobe and trade Gasol for an expiring contract and then buy out that contract. So getting Deron should only cost you 2 of your best players.
I for one supports the Lakers in this endeavor.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:04 PM
The Hornets making a run at Chris Paul in free agency? Anyone see any flaws in that logic?
June 21st, 2012 at 2:05 PM
Interesting.
I mean obviously you take Nash over Lin in a cocaine heartbeat on that team. Cannot imagine the manufactured media outrage over dumping the phenom(enally poor point guard), especially on here.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Twitter down again? Good lord.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Knicks fans would be pissed and then run out and buy Nash jersey. They would have to do some serious convincing to get Nash there though. He can make more money in other places with a lot less headaches. I think the lack of Dantoni as coach all but confirmed they wont be getting Nash.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I agree with this…I think most players who are interested in winning go where the talent is, not the market, and NY as it is currently constructed is definitely not a winning talent.
Deron actually cares about winning (from what I’ve read about him) and has a fiery competitive drive, so I’m curious to see what he does. As for the Lakers, they are pretty much fucked unless they get rid of Kobe or Pau. Since Mitch isn’t going to make himself a villian and amnesty Kobe (which would be the best move for the franchise and allow to continue winning elsewhere on a smaller salary), that leaves the option of trading Pau.
Still think Sota is interested in swapping Beas for Pau, which would actually be an ideal situation for both teams.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Yeah the comment about the Knicks was more due to the fact that they can’t really pay anyone else. They’re not getting a marquee free agent (who isn’t on the end of the career) for a looooooooooooooooooooong bit now.
Nets have the chance to build something, for sure.
Though it would be hilarious if it ends up being that the teams who were primed to have all the cap money a few years ago in the world’s biggest sporting market then ended up with 1) a nightmare cap situation team with headcase players and 2) a bare cupboard team with a rapper owner who will totally draw players for reals.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Well, they currently have $0 committed to the 2015-2016 season, so there’s that.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:24 PM
No. We wouldn’t.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:25 PM
They already have 2 marquee free agents, plus sufficient talent with Lin/Novak/Smith/Chandler. On paper, that team is pretty stacked. However, when you have Melo leading your team, its always going to be overrated.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:26 PM
I count Melo as a free agent signing because he would have gone to the Knicks anyway. Can’t believe they gutted the team for him.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Well in fact you will because you won’t be getting Nash.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:27 PM
GENIUS DONNIE WALSH EVERYBODY!
June 21st, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Who they will never win anything with. Marquee when they got them and marquee in relation to the actual product are two different things.
Or that, in better words.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:30 PM
I’m still stumped as to why people thought Knicks/Heat was actually going to be a classic – I had predicted a sweep or a 5 game series. Nobody on the Knicks outside of Chandler plays any defense.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:32 PM
/smashes computer
Loved Chandler, Felton, and especially Galo.
June 21st, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Its really easy to boil down why this trade happened. You cant amensty 2 players so they shipped Lewis and his contract out and picked up 2 decent players and can now amnesty Blatche. Does that explain it for you? Dont be surprised if they actually take Barnes when the Bobcats take Beal.
June 21st, 2012 at 3:23 PM
They weren’t going to amnesty Lewis when he was an expiring contract and could have been bought out any way. They will not amnesty Blatche anytime soon because it does nothing for them cap wise. If they amnesty Blatche this year, they will be $5M under the cap. If they do not amnesty Blatche this year, they will have $5M in MLE to use. $5M=$5M. If they amnesty Blatche after next season they will still be over the cap, which means they will only have the $5M MLE regardless.
