The LeBron James/Bill James Tumblr Is Fantastic
It had to happen, the Bill James/LeBron James Tumblr, as inevitable as LeBron eventually winning a title. LeBron James, the stat sheet stuffing, do everything, greatest basketball player on the planet, hounded only because of lack of a NBA title and deride as not being “clutch”, has been combined with his distant relative Bill James, the father of Sabrmetrics. LeBron James’ hipster glasses are a perfect foil to hipster stats.
Among my favorites is an amused LeBron letting us know that the Thunder’s plus/minus is much better with Collison than Perk, “but, shhhhhh, don’t tell Scott Brooks!” One more game, LeBron, one more game, and then we can let Brooks in on it.

FYI the Ken Anderson link above in the banner takes me to Lebron piece.

I, too, am of the opinion that the fewer periods, the better.
June 21st, 2012 at 8:32 PM
I assume this is the game post. I’m resigned to a Heat victory. OKC could be up by 5-10 n the fourth quarter and i think Miami would still win.
June 21st, 2012 at 8:33 PM
/every woman ever
June 21st, 2012 at 8:45 PM
Yeah AP I’d agree. MIA is doing a lot of little things well and OKC is not. Like the Chalmers drive at the end of game 4, Bosh did a great seal off to prevent a blocked shot. OKC is letting MIA pass the wall and settle into their offensive sets way to easily.
An OKC win isn’t impossible, but given the better execution and lack of errors by MIA, OKC will need to prove they can get it done late by means outside hero ball.
Not sure what the line is, but I’d take the Heat and give the points. I see MIA in a 6+ pt win today.
/and then we can all move onto the draft, next THUR 7pm EST.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:04 PM
Pumped. Win this shit tonight Miami, dont want any part of going back to tornado alley.
Be interested to see the mental state of both teams. Will Miami be tight? If they get down, does OKC have their heads right for a comeback or do they know its over?
June 21st, 2012 at 9:06 PM
You would think Westbrook and Durant would come out with guns ablazing. I wonder how Harden responds tonight, after his struggles last game.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:08 PM
no shot at a comeback, barring an injury to LeBron
June 21st, 2012 at 9:10 PM
I’m expecting a 28-16-10 from LBJ tonight. A game decided clearly with a few minutes to play. And a Lebron gaffe in the post-game that will play heavily in the Friday morning recaps.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:11 PM
Im at work. were LBJ and Harden given clean bills of health for tongiht?
June 21st, 2012 at 9:12 PM
Both teams looking a little too excited.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:12 PM
James is on the floor, seemingly running free and easy. Hadn’t heard anything about Harden not playing/I assume he’s good to go.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:15 PM
Given this is the Finals in one of JMac’s favorite sports, why no game thread throughout the series?
Wait, the answer to that might be related to not having a thread (or even a post really) about one of the 4 majors in golf, no Yardwork, etc. Maybe he’s still on vacation…
June 21st, 2012 at 9:17 PM
Sure, leave battier open….
June 21st, 2012 at 9:20 PM

June 21st, 2012 at 9:20 PM
Wonder if spoelstra just let’s Westbrook get his, building his confidence and taking Durant out of the flow.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:20 PM

Harden continuing his Mo Williams impression.

My sports world is about to be crapped on,ap, because my most hated sports figure is about to win.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:25 PM
I hope Coach Mac is watching Serge doing dumb shit all over the defensive end and over-rotating like crazy so we don’t have to hear him asking why he didn’t play 48 minutes tomorrow
June 21st, 2012 at 9:26 PM
100% of the teams I pulled for in June lost, mostly miserably. I think it will be tight but the Heat win seems inevitable (bastards).
/Pours one out for the condensed season which was spectactular
June 21st, 2012 at 9:27 PM
Nick collison should have been in the game 5 minutes ago. Brooks is a smart coach who has made dumb decisions this series
June 21st, 2012 at 9:28 PM
And Perk clearly demonstrates why he needs to play more…
June 21st, 2012 at 9:29 PM
I rally don’t know how okc is looking this bad. I thought this was a good matchup for them.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:30 PM
He’s getting a Miami Heat Championship ring in the mail.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Lemme “ax” you guys something.
How do you look at the Heat’s pending championship in the context of a shortened season? You see it as the team having overwhelming talent? Other teams getting worn down by the schedule? Some other issue?
For me, guys knowing their roles helped, like with nearly every champ. When things get stressful, you gotta default to the things you know/do best.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:33 PM
Hey, I’m hoping for a massive turnaround, but if the Heat wins, I’ll give LBJ his props. Granted, it won’t be the kinda props/fellatio he’ll receive from Screamin A and the like, but it’ll be positive.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:34 PM
SROD I’d say the Heat are built for post-season basketball. In the next few years, I see them having LESS success in the regular season due to mileage on the Big 3 but that having no impact on their postseason success.
The short season as it impacted the Heat IMO:
-let primary older competitors (Spurs, Celtics) get to playoffs with less mileage and be more formidable threats
-caused Derrick Rose to be mismanaged by CHI which led to a primary challenger in the East implode via his injury
June 21st, 2012 at 9:36 PM
remembering LeBron in those final 3 games vs Dallas year … vs. this postseason … such a radical change
last year in the finals LBJ had no baskets in the final 5 minutes, scored no points in the paint in their losses, and chucked a # of bad 3′s. Night and day.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:36 PM
I know its the right charge call but its a terribly defined rule
June 21st, 2012 at 9:36 PM
How do you look at the Heat’s pending championship in the context of a shortened season?
Were things THAT really condensed? Season’s still ending in June, right? If I’m wrong, somebody correct me.
But the shortened season shouldn’t factor in all that much.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:37 PM
Good question. I’d chalk some of it up to no major, lengthy inuries for the Heat (Bosh’s several games is the exception of course). But no top 7 player out for the season that I can recall. There have been arguments pro/con for Miami re: the shortened season, but I think maybe the gelling of a talented new team vs last year plus no majors juries plays a big part.
And I’ll omit any sarcasm about the predestined title for LBJ. He’s earned plenty of props this postseason and, gasp, appears to have corrected one of his weaknesses.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:38 PM
scripty, I hear ya.
I also wonder about the Lakers. At the start of the season, they were highly-regarded, but it seemed the short season exposed their weaknesses (PG play, Gasol’s inconsistency, short bench).
Meanwhile, Durant with the throw-down. Ow!
June 21st, 2012 at 9:39 PM
I could have been clearer. I meant the number of regular season games.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:39 PM
Thats where you blow him up Udonis, not give him a free dunk. Thats what you’re here for.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:39 PM
Most teams played like 35-40 games in the final 60 days. That’s an impact in terms of player fatigue. Also, the lack of off days reduces practice times for teams to implement changes and adapt to injuries/trades/develop young players.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:40 PM
Considering the way the role players underperformed in the regular season, its been a real surprise to see how well the non big 3 guys for miami have played in the past two series.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:40 PM
I believe it was same for all teams.
I could argue the shorter season hurt Miami because their bench was a dumpster fire for most of the season. It’s a lot to deal with having 3 players. A sprinting season helped the Thunder who basically outran every team in the league with youth.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:42 PM
Were they really highly regarded though? I thought everybody knew they had some big holes to fill, especially at PG.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:43 PM
CMON OKC!!!
June 21st, 2012 at 9:43 PM
Cowherd made a good point this morning when he said you can make the argument that Miami overachieved this season with the injuries they had and the unreliable performances of haslem, battier, miller, and others all season. This year was the lowest scoring averages for UD, dukie, and miller’s careers
June 21st, 2012 at 9:44 PM
OKC with 10 FT attempts thus far. Nice to see some calls go there way.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:44 PM
I could argue the shorter season hurt Miami because their bench was a dumpster fire for most of the season.
Yep. Maybe this season was more of an instant battle royal, in which all the competitors are put in the ring to start. Sure, the Bobcats and Nets go over the rope first, but it takes a while to dump out your Undertakers and Mr. Perfects.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:45 PM
Miami has a good defense but they get the benefit of drawing a ton of charges, many of the bullshit, throughout the season. Its how they make up for having a shitty diaper’s worth of big men
June 21st, 2012 at 9:45 PM
I just can’t watch this game.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:45 PM
Yeah but Lebron was probably pickin up those extra points.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:46 PM
Cowherd is and will be insufferable this week. Tune. Out.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:47 PM
Rondo,
That and those guys were just bad at shooting all year. I saw many games, especially road games, where those guys missed open shots. I remember two of the games vs boston where the role players for miami couldnt hit a bucket to save their lives
June 21st, 2012 at 9:48 PM
The role players have really impressed this series I hate to say it.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:49 PM
MPIII,
Compared to some of the other espn tools, he’s been decent this week. I only listen in 10 minute spurts
June 21st, 2012 at 9:50 PM
I could argue the shorter season hurt Miami because their bench was a dumpster fire for most of the season.
Inverse would be true. Shorter season would be less minutes for the big 3.
The MIA bench, with keeping the Big 3, was, is and always will be a dumpester fire. Anybody that thinks they are going to be a solid 8-9 rotation team at any point is clueless. They’d have to get some minimum wage Jeremy Lin type roster miracle.

Anyway, you see Wade’s kicks? Dang, those were sweet. I can’t afford ‘em, but…

June 21st, 2012 at 9:52 PM
If OKC is smart, they call Jordan/Cho in CHAR immediately after losing tonight and ship Harden off for that #2 pick. They will be losing Harden and cant rely on getting him to leave via sign & trade.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:52 PM
Ap- he blows Lebron so hard, and just uses every excuse to fellate him. He could crap in cowherds mouth and he would justify it.
Cowherd ain’t too bad, but his lbj blowing is as bad as anyone in the media.
June 21st, 2012 at 9:53 PM
Battier looked like a 45-year old Robert Parrish in that Indiana series. This series, looks like he went to Berlin for some of those Kobe Fountain of Youth treatments. Flopping like in his Memphis prime.

He’ll do well, albeit with some awklardly long hugs with Wade and Bosh, and have one comment that gets every fired up tomorrow. But anybody that starts on a “dynasty” talk will demonstrate that they have no clear idea how the salary cap, free agency and future payroll tax works. If you say 2-3 finals appearances = a dynasty, then maybe I’d but that…

Truth be told, I hated LeBron when he first came into the league. Didn’t like the hype, thought he would never live up to it. But was living in the OH at the time and watched him play every night and damn he was fantastic. Won me over with his play.
Not been easy rooting for him. He’s had some unexplainable no-shows in the playoffs. Been a total douche at times. But he’s earned it, dont tell me he hasn’t. Earned every bit of it.

Gained respect for LEbron after this postseason. The bastard finally shut up and matured (no premature celebrations, dancing, chalk tosses, etc).
Congrats to the Heat.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:31 PM
you got the Olympics at least. I prefer the winter olympics but the summer olympics are better than nothing.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Just look at those miami shooting percentages…ridiculous
June 21st, 2012 at 11:32 PM
Pfft..espn doesnt have brodcasting rights so they wont give it much coverage other than basketball and Michael Phelps.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:33 PM
and track.
//thank goodness
June 21st, 2012 at 11:33 PM
I think OKC is gonna have some scar tissue from this for sure.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Not usually an olympics watcher but I’m excited abiut London because the kids are old enough to appreciate the number of countries, different cultures and hopefully the competition
Opening ceremonies will be appt tv
June 21st, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Mike Miller played better in one game than Harden has in 5.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:37 PM
They’re so young that I think they will be scary in 1-2 years when they’re “playoff hardened”…people forget that just 2 years ago they couldn’t make it out of the first round. To go from first round to finals within 2 seasons is remarkable. The league should be scared.
/ pending Harden doesn’t get shook in the Finals again
June 21st, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Soooo, Dan Gilbert. Hows that guarantee going?
June 21st, 2012 at 11:38 PM
I despise Harden’s game and pestiness more and more every game. Thank goodness this series is over.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:39 PM
He will just wait to get the amnesty
June 21st, 2012 at 11:39 PM
I think that’s the last time you’ll see Harden in an OKC uniform.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Harden should learn how to take a charge from miami. Hes such a puss
June 21st, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Jordana Brewster on Conan right now.
/yes please
June 21st, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Between the Laker series and this one, Harden has been exposed.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:42 PM
JUWAN HOWARD MINUTES!
June 21st, 2012 at 11:42 PM
MIA has no reason to amnesty him other than to free up a roster spot. Maybe a injury settlement. They still have to pay him via amnesty and it wouldnt change their cap situation.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Juwan Howard!
Fab Five gets a title of any kind, first ever.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:42 PM
You cant even put Anthony in for garbage time? Cmon Spo!
/bad hands
June 21st, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Have you noticed how much people love talking about using an amnesty??
June 21st, 2012 at 11:44 PM
LOL @ Juwan airball
June 21st, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Its truly amazing how miami transformed from the indiana series to now
June 21st, 2012 at 11:46 PM
Jerry Reinsdort knew Eddie Curry would be a vital cog on a championship team.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Despite wade being a bitch on the court, mad props to him for doing what he does while dealing with that psycho bitch exwife who is trying to steal the kids
June 21st, 2012 at 11:48 PM
Lebron James. NBA Champion.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:48 PM
Have you noticed how much people love talking about using an amnesty??

I’m sure Lisk will break it down, but one of the best postseasons an individual has had in the modern era. Congrats LeBron. Consider the monkey off your back.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:50 PM
Sign Deron Williams because he will want to play for a contender!
June 21st, 2012 at 11:50 PM
I wonder how Bayless will spin it and deflect all criticism so he comes off as always right!
/wanking
//will just wait for richard deitsch or awful announcing to recap it
June 21st, 2012 at 11:53 PM
RIP to Lebron ringless jokes on Twitter.
Props to KD.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:54 PM
Championship in hand, LeBron is on the journey towards being the greatest player ever. These next 3-5 years will be interesting.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:57 PM
31-10-5 in playoffs for LBJ this postseason.
*The year the Cavs lost to ORL, he averaged 35-9-8.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:58 PM
I say he gets 2 more titles, max.
June 21st, 2012 at 11:59 PM
Thankfully we can now turn our attention to Melo losing in the first round 8 of 9 seasons and OKC needing to amend their roster.
Props to MIA. Looking forward to them firing Spo next year all the same!
June 22nd, 2012 at 12:00 AM
Hey Spo, its ok to drop the robotic coach speak for once. Be human.
June 22nd, 2012 at 12:00 AM
Battier/Miller/Chalmers just a touch better than Williams/West/I dont even know which shitty player to mention
June 22nd, 2012 at 12:02 AM
There’s no reason to think Lebron’s stats and more MVPs wont put him anywhere short in those metrics of top 5 players ever.
The whole title thing will be dicey given modern roster/salary restraints. I mean if Bosh dont come back I am not sure if they beat OKC. MIA could be a good place for Lebron. I always thought he’d be bolting to L.A. when he can first leave, but now maybe not.
June 22nd, 2012 at 12:03 AM
Lebron had to dominate offensively while in cleveland. In miami, he could dominate defensively while still putting up stellar numbers. He didnt have to do everything (except for the times when wade disappeared)
June 22nd, 2012 at 12:08 AM
I think my point was missed. I was saying LBJ been playing at this high level most in playoffs for the past 5 years – outside those 2 Boston games and the 3 Dallas games. I don’t think he’s changed so much as gotten Wade & Bosh to take some pressure off him. That’s meant as a compliment not a dig.
June 22nd, 2012 at 12:09 AM
Congrats Miami Heat and LBJ. Now we can lose the lazy no-ring argument against a player who is truly one of a kind. His passing ability to me is the most fascinating for a player of his size and skill set.
