Kevin Durant is Being Sued By an 80′s Rock Guitarist for Stealing “Durantula” Nickname
Kevin Durant is facing a really dumb lawsuit from a guy who claims to have gone by the nickname “Durantula” back in the 80′s. Mark Durante played guitar for Public Enemy (No relation to Public Enemy with Chuck D and Flavor Flav), The Aliens, The Next Big Thing, The Slammin’ Watusis and most importantly, the Revolting Cocks. From TMZ:
Durante says he adopted the name “Durantula” for his “on-stage and performance persona” — and has used it to market “music, recordings, apparel, t-shirts, guitars, and related merchandise.”
The guitarist says he registered the “Durantula” trademark. He’s suing for damages and an injunction stopping KD from using the name.
Before we dismiss this, perhaps we should check out Durantula.com.
The evidence is pretty damning. With every basket Kevin Durant scores, he dilutes the Durantula brand. Because of Kevin Durant’s theft, you probably didn’t even know about the “Surrealistic Audio Visual for Non Conformists” that the real Durantula provides. That’s messed up. Hopefully, Durant’s off-court legal matter isn’t a distraction for the Thunder tonight during Game 5.
In case you were wondering, here is some Durante-era Revolting Cocks. They’re pretty much the greatest band ever.

Durant screams “DURANTULAAAAA” before every press conference. He has a legit case.

Once again douchebags from the 80′s make jackasses of themselves over copyrite law.

And Twitter appears to be down.

I hope the attorney that filed that suit gets hit with very costly sanctions.

This is the only thing that matters. If it’s true, then it’s not a dumb lawsuit.

this vid of durante is fairly mindblowing…also, dude was a stereotypical late 80′s/early 90′s shredder. running up and down scales really fast without knowing what exactly that’s supposed to accomplish. thanks yngwie…thanks a lot.

Good, hope it brings back some people to this place.

Perhaps, but its not KD that uses that name….you never hear him refer to himself as Durantula. Media members and fans call him that. None of his merchandise (Nike shoes, apparel) are called Durantula.
/ what’s his case?
// legit want to know if this would have any merit in court

Your logic isn’t wanted around these parts
/spits
Durantula may suck, and Durantula may be the laughing stock of the Surrealistic Audio Visual for Non Conformist movement, but if he was there first, then he gets to shove his Revolting Cock all up in whatever courthouse he wants.

this is such a reduction of 80′s rock, and its so true.

Did Kevin Durant actually steal the nickname? Like, is he making money off of it in promotions or sponsorships? I thought it was just a nickname given to him by media and fans?

Yeah, what karma said in comment 10.

Someone please post a link to Kevin Durant’s “use and profit” of the term Durantula. I’ve read columns that refer to him that way and wouldn’t be surprised if the Thunder organization may have done something that infringed on the name, but what has Kevin Durant done himself to profit wrongly from it? It would be interesting to read the actual lawsuit.
June 21st, 2012 at 12:24 PM
No. the guy should not be suing Durant. He should be suing any company using ‘Durantula’ for OKC shit. I am sure there is numerous vendors doing that. Not that I care to actually check.

I hate when lawyers do stupid shit like this and make other lawyers look bad.
/I assume in making that statement that Durant is being sued solely because he’s Kevin Durant and has deep pockets

I’m not a lawyer, but I’d be willing to bet that the lawsuit is a combination of comments 19 and 20, but when reporting it, the media only mentions Durant.

Rough week for Durant. Team is down 3-1, one of the “bus monitor” kids was spotted wearing a Durant jersey, and now this…
