Euro 2012: Magnificent Cristiano Ronaldo Header Sends Portugal to Semifinals
It wasn’t pretty, but Portugal advances to face the Spain/France winner in the Euro 2012 semifinals with a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic. Cristiano Ronaldo’s third goal of the tournament made the difference. Lovely ball from Moutinho to set it up. [HT to 101GreatGoals]

If Portugal were to beat Spain … equiv of LeBron and the Cavs beating the Spurs in the Finals that one year?
(Cavs were swept)

Insert comments blasting TBL for that comparison in 3, 2, 1….

Definitely not. Five of their first XI play for Real, Man United, or Chelsea, they’re not exactly a rag tag bunch of misfits with one player carrying them. Ronaldo just makes up for the fact that Portugal is lacking in real strikers.
Spain beating the USA in Beijing would be a better hypothetical example maybe.

Diamondbacks over Yankees in 2001 maybe?

Spain has lots of good players, and took the 2008 Redeem Team to the final minutes in the Gold Medal game.
A more accurate comparison would be France (carried by only Tony Parker) beating Team USA.

With Byung-Hyun Kim as Lebron?

Not a bad comparison. I would say maybe more like late 1980s Pistons w/Isaiah taking out Lakers.

The disparity in talent between the two countries isn’t that great – it’s just that Spain have a huge reputation for the Portuguese to psychologically overcome.

Like the Bulls beating the Lakers in ’91.

The comparison doesn’t work because soccer is a team game and the NBA form of “basketball” has evolved into a glorified game of 1 on 1. Two people battle and the other 8 stand in the corners and hold their nuts.
