Chinese Soccer Has Ambition, Still Incredibly Corrupt
Chinese soccer has ambition. The Super League club Shanghai Shenhua scored major coups in the past two transfer windows, signing first Nicolas Anelka and then Didier Drogba, to contract worth potentially $30 million over two years. The leagues’ ambition, however, cannot mask some incredible corruption.
A three-year-long match-fixing probe has resulted in jail time for 56 Chinese soccer figures. The tally includes two former league commissioners, four members of the 2002 World Cup squad and the country’s most high-profile referee.
Ever since the early nineties, China has allowed some of its state-run teams to acquire corporate sponsorships and investors, and dole out higher salaries. But it was so swiftly overrun by gamblers with the power to fix games that the carmaker Geely dropped its support of a club in 2001, after less than a year. “I was shocked,” Geely’s chief, Li Shufu, told reporters. “For a match, bribes of a million, two million yuan”—a hundred fifty to three hundred thousand dollars—“were offered, and not a single football official or referee ever got caught.”
Like FIFA, the Chinese Football Association policies itself. Unlike FIFA, the Chinese Football Association has hired an independent body to help root out the corruption.

Sadly, search function is non-existent for this site. But once again, I ask. Are you seriously telling me you haven’t over the years, and recently over past 1 years, have NEVER EVER gone to a soccer post and insinuated that soccer is boring, for fags, etc etc. Surely you yourself can’t believe that? Right?
Sure, whatever you say superstar.

Drogba going to China I can somewhat justify. Man is going to 35 next year. But how does Eto’o end up in Russia? At 31, he still has about 3-4 years of good soccer left.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:07 PM
and the Guangzhou club give a huge contract Marcello Lippi to manage them. Apparently the rising, influential figures in Chinese politics are big soccer fans, and all this investment is part of an attempt to get a closer to the center of power.

what about vominting from dehydration on 18 when you’re sitting at 76 like i did saturday?
June 21st, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Don’t know much about golf, but 72 is par, right? If you are shooting 76 on 18th, you’re a borderline pro, right?
June 21st, 2012 at 1:18 PM
par was 72, but that aint close to pro…those guys would probably be shooting around 65 on this course for the full 18.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:18 PM

WAs playing a great round for me in league play yesterday. 1 over going into 18 (we were playing the back 9). I took a 9 on 18. I try not to get to upset on the golf course but after my snake on the 18th green a putter throw was in order. That costed me a round at the tavern.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:24 PM
My goal on Sunday is to break into double digits.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:26 PM
It’s probably an ego thing. He wasn’t going to be the undisputed star striker at a major club in England or Spain, so the next best thing is getting a massive contract and becoming the face of Russian soccer. Plus the Anzhi oligarch is tied in with some powerful people (Putin) who are trying to revamp the image of the country through soccer. So the connections could be useful for a FIFA-bureaucrat career after retirement. Or at least that’s one reason why people are falling over to embrace the new money of Qatar and China.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:31 PM
what about vominting from dehydration on 18 when you’re sitting at 76 like i did saturday?
about 2 years ago when I was really playing alot, I played with a 4-some at the same course every Sunday where we first off every week. I showed a bit hungover bu shot a 38 (2 over)on the front. We make the turn at about 8:15 and I am really hurting so I get a couple of beers and start feeling better and I am still playing good (4 over through 15). My buddy lights upa cigar and gave me one. 16 is a par 5 and by the time I get to the green I am turning green. I am in a greenside bunker lying 2. I blade the bunkershot over the green into the lake, as I am climbing out of the bunker I puke up the beers I have drank, and I unstrap my bag from the cart and walk back to the clubhouse get in my car and leave. I was a 8 handicap at the time so it was a good round; still pisses me off…
June 21st, 2012 at 1:50 PM
As would I, but we’ll see about that between the heat & beer.
June 21st, 2012 at 1:58 PM
wanna break into double digits? ditch the beer.
/pretty simple
June 21st, 2012 at 2:00 PM
But the beer helps with the pain of sucking. It’s a Catch-22.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Seriously though, I think I would get more benefit from getting out on the course more than 5 times a year than I would not drinking a few beers.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:03 PM
I feel the times when I don’t drink I overthink leading to bad shot selection and over-worrying. And I’ve shot the same score with 2-4 beers in me as when I’m stone sober.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:04 PM
that was my point…was just being an asshole about it.
tho i always do get a little enjoyment out of getting paired up with two guys who are a sixer each deep by the turn who say this is their fourth round of the year in june and never practice complain about taking 6′s and 7′s.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:06 PM
I’m the guy who is so paranoid about pissing people like you off, that after I hit one into the next fairway, I’ll pick it up drop it near the green so we’re chipping about the same time.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:09 PM
lol…speaking of catch 22′s. i always tell people im only pissed at myself on the golf course and please dont apologize for bad shots because it makes me feel bad that they’re uncomfortable thinking im pissed.
but if some frat bro’s bragging about his 75 from the tips at [insert incredibly hard course here] and anyone who knows shit about the game sees they’re full of it…yea, i like giving those people shit.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Spence do you smoke during/before playing?
June 21st, 2012 at 2:10 PM
You can play golf with me anytime, brah. There is nothing worse than slow golf.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:11 PM
before, yea…but i show up an hour+ early to warm up, chip and putt and am usually sober by the time i tee off. used to smoke during the round, but never anymore…ruins my focus and i get lazy in my swing.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:12 PM
/shouldnt say never…occasionally still cheef one on the course
June 21st, 2012 at 2:13 PM
I’m also hate being slow, so I’ll often just hit the ball, and go to where it is. If I’m playing like shit for a hole, I’ll take a gentlemen snowman.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:16 PM
golden rule right there.
i still think the WORST slow play annoying thing is when guys hit a drive less than 150 yards and wait for the green to clear on a par 5.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:18 PM
I think I’d go with hitting multiple tee shots. My father-in-law is a decent golfer now that he’s retired, and he does this and it bugs the shit out of me.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:22 PM
depends on how frequent it is…and if it’s just a drop, step up and hit once or twice per 9, aint that big a deal as long as youre not wasting time looking for the first one.
i also hate fat people who take an hour to get from the green to their cart and aren’t able to get to their ball without it. i simply can’t understand how people can get/stay fat while playing golf…well, at least if they’re trying to hit it far. shit takes effort man.
June 21st, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Only time I do that is if I slice really really badly and would have no chance of finding my ball. And I never hit more than 2 tee shots.
