A Historical Reminder of the Hits & Misses by ESPN’s NBA Draft “Player Rater”
ESPN’s John Hollinger puts together a “player rater” each June before the NBA draft. The goal: “project NBA PER from college stats.” [If you love college hoops/NBA but don't have ESPN Insider, sorry.] It is statistically-driven. As with anyone’s pro projections for college players, there are hits and misses.
[Note: I loved Hasheem Thabeet! I liked Michael Beasley more than Derrick Rose!]
Hollinger revealed his 2012 draft projections Monday and a few bizarre rankings prompted this post. Hollinger had Baylor’s Quincy Miller 6th (preposterous!), Moe Harkless of St. John’s 35th (absurd!), and Michigan State’s Draymond Green (16th) ahead of UConn’s Jeremy Lamb (17) and Duke’s Austin Rivers (18). Anyone who watched college basketball this season or has spoken to NBA scouts/front office-types probably has some strong thoughts on those rankings.
Let’s look back at Hollinger’s recent history with the “player rater.” With Hollinger’s “PER” ranking/projection in parens:
2011
Misses
Tobias Harris (8) – Could barely get on the court in Milwaukee, but he only turns 20 this summer.
Kenneth Faried (29) – The 22nd pick was a monster for the Nuggets. In Hollinger’s defense, plenty of people missed on Faried. He was so good, they traded Nene Hilario.
Marshon Brooks (56)
Isaiah Thomas (57) – 2nd Round pick made 2nd team All-Rookie and played much better than their 1st round pick, Jimmer Fredette.
Hits
Kawhi Leonard (5) – A steal as the 15th pick.
2010
Misses
Xavier Henry (6)
Luke Babbitt (7)
Hits
Greivis Vasquez (10) – Late 1st round pick had a very good sophomore season.
Ekpe Udoh (50) – Udoh was a lottery pick by the Warriors, but has been a bust and is now in Milwaukee.
2009
Misses
Nick Calathes (6) – He’s a star … in Greece. Has yet to play a minute in the NBA.
Jonny Flynn (9) – Bust. Three teams in three years.
Paul Delaney (16) – Who?
Aaron Jackson (17) – Huh?
DeMar DeRozan (54) – Perhaps his worst miss. DeRozan has been very good (17.2 ppg two years ago; 16.7 ppg last season) for the Raptors.
Hits
Ty Lawson (1) – Fell all the way 18, but he’s been terrific. Not the best player in the draft, but very, very good.
2002-2008
Hollinger collected all the data from those drafts into one spot. The “player rater” Hollinger came up with loved Joe Alexander, the West Virginia forward with a 40-inch vertical leap. Alexander, taken in the lottery by Milwaukee, played in 67 games for two teams, and hasn’t been in the league since 2010. How much did Hollinger love Alexander? He was rated ahead of Derrick Rose. (Then again, so were George Hill and Mario Chalmers.) But in 2006, Hollinger had his best hit – Rajon Rondo 2nd. (Unfortunately, in that same draft, he had Shawne Williams rated 3rd, ahead of LaMarcus Aldridge.)
If you feel like going back to 2005, Rashad McCants, Julius Hodge, and Nate Robinson were ahead of Deron Williams.
Consensus: Nobody knows anything, but it’s really, really fun to throw darts and speculate.

Historcial?
June 19th, 2012 at 7:25 PM
A bust? That’s harsh. He’s a rotation player.
June 19th, 2012 at 7:36 PM
If Beasley had cared at all about his NBA career he very easily could have been a better pick than Rose. Apparently character matters with some of this shit though.
June 19th, 2012 at 8:12 PM
So if Beasley really cared he would have had 2 MVP’s by now?

I don’t know about that. His potential was limitless. He’s just a dumbass. He got paid and that was it.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:15 PM
OKC not fucking around tonight
June 19th, 2012 at 9:34 PM
I come for TBLAD, I leave because its empty.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:39 PM
Thunder losing that big lead already. Geez. was 17, down to 7
June 19th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
I really can’t see OKC losing this game… also Collison… good things happen whenever he’s on the court. Kind of like the antithesis of Martellus Bennett.
Cowboys!
June 19th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
I don’t think the Moe Harkless rating on a purely driven stat analysis is that inaccurate. He was pretty raw early on and had a slow, steady improvement. He didn’t exactly come in with monster performances. He had some good games against low level D1 teams and D3 talent. Then he slowly developed. He also played the most minutes in D1 hoops last year, so his efficiency levels arent the greatest. He did have a # of dud games as well, including that two single digit games in the Big East tournament. A pedestrian shooting %.
I like Harkless but that’s a pretty fair rating given the dynamics of his test.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:48 PM
OKC looks awful without KD on the floor. Brooks waited too long..
June 19th, 2012 at 9:48 PM
There we go, harden
June 19th, 2012 at 9:48 PM
Suck it up, wade
June 19th, 2012 at 9:49 PM
Jmac, can you fix that typo in the headline?
/obsessive former copy editor
June 19th, 2012 at 9:50 PM
So goaltend and foul is nothing? Ibaka out there trying to kill people.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:50 PM
Wheelchair Wade!
June 19th, 2012 at 9:51 PM
This game has been called well for a change. They’re letting them play,
June 19th, 2012 at 9:54 PM
Of course Wheelchair Wade is perfectly fine.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:57 PM
I love the way the Heat are playing Durant, pressuring and denying all over the floor. Giving him absolutely no space to operate. Almost seems to be getting frustrated, forcing up some bad shots.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:57 PM
Westbrook is just out of control.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:58 PM
For how much I thought I didn’t like Lebron, after watching these playoffs I can’t stand Wade and Bosh.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
Coop, wade jumped into ibaka. Correct noncall. Wade reverting back to whiny bitch douchebag tonight…
June 19th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
By the way…Norris Cole rocking the high top fade y’all. Young fella paying tribute to the OGs.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
I dont mind Bostrich as much but I absolutle HATE Dwade.
June 19th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
Wow, they’re actually calling fouls on Lebron?!?!
/ miracle
June 19th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
He never really left.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:00 PM
I have nothing against bosh. He is consistent with effort. Gives his all every night. Wade? Notsomuch
June 19th, 2012 at 10:01 PM
Is there any way you can get this site to auto refresh when comments are made?
I hate having to refresh all the time!
/first world problem
June 19th, 2012 at 10:01 PM
That last foul on ibaka was questionable. Bosh was calling for a TO, ibaka slipped and fell on him, so its a foul…Greece thought that was a nice bailout
June 19th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
I dont mind Bostrich as much but I absolutle HATE Dwade.
I just can’t stand anytime he makes a play he proceeds to make a scene, but I respect what he does game in and game out.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Yeah, he does have a lil bit of KG in him.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Yup. LBJ has played near flawlessly these playoffs and isn’t giving the haters( of which I have been) anything to say. He’s been superb.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
What a dumb call on Ibaka blaka blaka
June 19th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
Has CHICAGO been around this series at all?
I like his NBA comments.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
If you are that happy after having a crappy McDonald’s smoothie, you deserve to be kicked in the cooz.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
If westbrook would stop the 1 on 4 heroball fastbreak garbage, he’d be even better
June 19th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
So Westbrook has 14 shots to Durant’s 9. Is this good or is Westbrook killing his team?…. decision after the final score.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
James is almost a guarantee to score if he gets in the key. Damn.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
I love the way the Heat are playing Durant, pressuring and denying all over the floor. Giving him absolutely no space to operate. Almost seems to be getting frustrated, forcing up some bad shots.
Battier’s defense he is playing on him frustrating the hell out of him, first time I’ve seen Durant working this hard to get a look.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
Westbrook. Wow. What a dunk back
June 19th, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Westbrook is the reason the Thunder are leading.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Thats right james jones. Eat a steaming pile
June 19th, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Stupid swiss
June 19th, 2012 at 10:06 PM
The brunette chic in that commercial can get it… there’s actually a website dedicated to putting out knowledge on random chics from commercials… too lazy to find it.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:07 PM
That was an amazing first half. Wow.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:07 PM
Durant needs to have a 15 point quarter
June 19th, 2012 at 10:08 PM
Mmm , burger king BBQ butt meat.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:09 PM
Hey, the braves bullpen shut down the yankees.
/slow clap

LOL. Need an editor JMAC!

geez, only up 3 and lbj hasnt gotten his yet. ruh roh okc.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:10 PM
Nevermind, Duckworthed!
June 19th, 2012 at 10:10 PM
Taco bell doritos taco looks like a great meal compared to those new BK sandwiches
June 19th, 2012 at 10:12 PM
It still blows my mind that WSP is the music that is occasionally used on the telecast.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
Rondo for Westbrook straight up.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
The Doritos taco is badass. Wash it down with a nacho burrito, and you have yourself some satisfaction.
Then a uuuuuggge dump.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
This has been a historcial series.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
What song? I’m pretty sure I’ve heard them use Climb To Safety before…
June 19th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
One of the best Finals in historcy.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:14 PM
+1
June 19th, 2012 at 10:15 PM
Mentioned this on the twitter, but that early LeBron layup was Jordan-esque. Just beautiful.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
So much for the thought that Harden could be a Max player.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
I thought I heard bears gone fishin
June 19th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Uuuuge, or yuuuuuge dump?
June 19th, 2012 at 10:17 PM
Al Leiter just fucking destroying the MLB network studio host Greg Amsinger for being a dumbass regarding pine tar. Amsinger suggested pitchers should use pinetar to get a better grip..Leiter and Mitch went apeshit trying to explain to him why pinetar for a pitcher would cause the pitcher to actually lose grip and be dangerous for hitters. Hilarious when the athlete actually owns the non-player host.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:18 PM
FYI.
Taco Bell will be releasing a flaming hot Dorito shell taco as well as Cool Ranch in the near future.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:18 PM
What song? I’m pretty sure I’ve heard them use Climb To Safety before…
They did the intro music into the commercial with Surpise Valley. Just did a google on this and this has been noticed. I guess Fox did it with the World Series as well.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:19 PM
MPIII,
The doritos taco followed up by the beefy cruch burrito (with the hot spicy fritos).. Great bad food. Huge dump indeed
June 19th, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Yuuuuge if I throw in a gordita
June 19th, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Love that tune. One of my favorites of theirs.
Agreed. But you know someone is going to give him Joe Johnson money.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
Just saw that. Awesome.
Stupid fucking Hagadone….
June 19th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
The hate for Westbrook reminds me of the hate towards Kobe. Not enough people watching the flow of the game, just basing everything on box scores.
/ just saw a Skip Bayless tweet about Westbrook being on pace to shoot 30 shots and that’s why the Thunder will lose
June 19th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
Wsp reminds me of pot, then taco bell, then laughing at my dump
June 19th, 2012 at 10:21 PM
I thought I heard bears gone fishin MP
Google Widespread Panic with NBA whatever and others have noticed it already. There are several songs. I’m not into the NBA and don’t watch a lot of it. I just turned it on and there it was. Sounds like a different band playing the song or something.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Karma, thats the horse skip beats into the ground.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Favorite wsp song has to be I Am not alone
June 19th, 2012 at 10:22 PM
I thought I heard bears gone fishin
Love that tune. One of my favorites of theirs
Probably their last fantastic album. I got old and got married and kid and whatnot. That time of my life was the fucking best and WSP was a part of the soundtrack.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Tough one …Westbrook is special but if I am Ainge I keep my ace. Rondo and Durant would be such an awesome pair with Harden as the full time 2 guard
June 19th, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Florida state pitcher sporting a nice Ron Guidry mustache
June 19th, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Karl ravech’s toupee looks fantastic.
/looks at marv albert’s bad hairpiece
June 19th, 2012 at 10:25 PM
Kc- agreed. I just kind of stopped listening to wsp after medicine. But they were so awesome. Great music and of course great live.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
Rondo facilitating for OKC would be incredible. Durant would average 35/game.
Westbrook/Bradley as a backcourt for Boston with Pierce, Green, and Garnett? I’d take that all day.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
OKC deserves to lose for being so stupid
June 19th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
GET PERKINS OFF THE FLOOR
June 19th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
Or, rather, that song was on their last fantastic album.
“Favorite wsp song has to be I Am not alone”
Ooh. Yeah. Great version on that Athens Live Three CD album Live in the Classic City.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:28 PM
Love pilgrims, too. Light fuse is a classic.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:28 PM
Til The Medicine Takes was indeed a great disc. I didn’t mind Don’t Tell The Band, but all downhill (IMO) after that.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:28 PM
KD should probably stop obviously fouling people. Then complaining about his obvious fouls.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:28 PM
FREE NICK COLLISON
June 19th, 2012 at 10:29 PM
If youre going to foul someone, foul them hard enough where they wont make the shot
June 19th, 2012 at 10:29 PM
Looks like I will be taking my sports hiatus.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:30 PM
Now wsp will return to the scotch soundtrack this weekend.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:30 PM
Floor wrestling?
June 19th, 2012 at 10:31 PM
Kc- agreed. I just kind of stopped listening to wsp after medicine. But they were so awesome. Great music and of course great live. MP
Oh,yeah. I bought the next two albums and liked some songs, but they already had 300 they could pull out on a tour. I got stuck in that time. Live freaking music. Some of us on here were talking about this the other day and I think I’ve seen more WSP sets than any other band other than Leftover Salmon, Split Lip Rayfield or NMAS. There is probably a case for The Rev. Horton Heat. He plays this area about 80 times a year since the early 90s.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:31 PM
the fix is on
June 19th, 2012 at 10:32 PM
Nice defense Thunder.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:33 PM
Scott brooks has awful rotation patterns and OKC is lazy. The old Celtics put up more of a fight
June 19th, 2012 at 10:33 PM
LeBron has more assists than the entire OKC team. Way too much isolation and hero play crap from OKC.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:34 PM
Light fuse is a classic.
Favorite live album. That is what got me into Panic. I lived in Kansas. It took awhile for them to get established in Colorado (and by extension, Lawrence.) I have that on my ipod and it makes mowing the yard easy.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:35 PM
The dumbest thing about it is that the stats do not back it up what so ever. The more shots he takes the Thunder have a more efficient offense and win more games.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:35 PM
I dont actually care if the heat win. More power to them…the fake victim mentality heat fans (not all the fanbase but a large percentage) make it unpleasant.
And Asdrubal just took Chapman yard for a walkoff
June 19th, 2012 at 10:35 PM
Droooobs walkoff HR. Down goes Chapman. WINDIANS!
June 19th, 2012 at 10:35 PM
They need to get Collison in the game. Whenever Perkins is in the game, bad things happen.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:36 PM
Give me Rondo’s 12 points/18 assists/10 rebounds every night..
June 19th, 2012 at 10:37 PM
I’ve been thinking the same thing. Seems like Spo is outcoaching the hell outta Brooks. Eat shit Thunder. Get it together. I turn the game on when they were up 15 and they blow the lead. Fuck that.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:37 PM
Vinny del negro questions scott brooks’ rotation patterns
June 19th, 2012 at 10:37 PM
Kc- seen wsp quite a few times myself, never disappointed. String cheese was also great. It’s weird, I stumbled on mmj senior yeAr, and the transition from wsp started. Mmj has dominated my tunes since. But I love that wsp is the topic because I forgot about them and can’t wait to get them back in the rotation.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:38 PM
Hey serge, its KG. let me teach you how to really set an illegal screen to get away with..
June 19th, 2012 at 10:39 PM
Lots of late whistles on both sides tonight..
June 19th, 2012 at 10:40 PM
No offense to Milwaukee natives, but their crowd is exactly how you would imagine their crowd would look like.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:41 PM
I always thought Lebron would never get a ring. Looks like he will now, and I will unleash a furious sports cry.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:41 PM
You watching the brewers-jays game?
June 19th, 2012 at 10:42 PM
Even a bad team wouldnt leave miami that open
June 19th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
It feels like miami should be up 10
June 19th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
doesn’t look good for OKC. so many defensive breakdowns
June 19th, 2012 at 10:44 PM
The Thunder are soft. Doesn’t help that they don’t get the calls that Miami constantly does either.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:44 PM
rant on..
I always have a problem when announcers criticize defenders biting on a pump fake. Of course you know its a pump fake after the fact but they didn’t know that at the point when a decision to contest or not had to be made… essentially by admonishing harden going for the Wade pump you’re pretty much asking that no one ever attempt to block a shot EVER
rant off.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:44 PM
Ledouche with another foul, no call. He is my kryptonite.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:45 PM
Yep. Aramid went deep. Crazy game.

June 19th, 2012 at 10:50 PM
Another bullshit call favoring lebron.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:51 PM

June 19th, 2012 at 10:52 PM

June 19th, 2012 at 10:52 PM
How does Durant have 0 rebounds… Eddy Curry is like “Come on men!”
June 19th, 2012 at 10:53 PM
At least Paul Pierce made his fouls on lebron worthwhile and rough
June 19th, 2012 at 10:54 PM
Not sure why they keep leaving Harden alone on LeBron. He has absolutely no chance by himself.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:54 PM
Harden has to sit. Hes killing his team like danny green killed the spurs last series
June 19th, 2012 at 10:55 PM
Barring a durant offensive explosion, this game is over
June 19th, 2012 at 10:55 PM
Got home in time for last two innings. I couldn’t imagine facing Aceves. Scares me just watching how violent he is.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:55 PM
James jones being his useless piece of shit self on defense.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:55 PM
Looks like I’ve watched my last NBA game of the season. Good riddance.
/Will watch a Game 7 if it happens
June 19th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Durant, flopping. At least he was trying for his first rebound.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
This Thunder team is really pissing me off.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Aceves scares me because of his inconsistency. Sometimes he feels the need to put guys on base and work out of a jam..
June 19th, 2012 at 10:57 PM
I know james jones is from miami and is a hometown favorite but the heat would be better off without him. There are other guys who can hit threes that actually play defense
June 19th, 2012 at 10:58 PM
I don’t know its still anybody’s game… The Heat are due for their usual 6 minute FG drought.
June 19th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Yep, see ya nba. My shit-a-giver is now broken.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Cmon OKC.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:00 PM
Durant doing his best Reggie Miller impersenation. LeBron has run him out to the perimeter.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:01 PM
Whats a good reason to buy a Lincoln isn’t it just its equivalent Ford brand with higher payments?
June 19th, 2012 at 11:01 PM
If either team loses due to a bad sub pattern in this last quarter, the coach should be taken out back and shot. I think Lebron takes this home for MIA.

June 19th, 2012 at 11:04 PM

Is there a reason why LaPorta isn’t playing other than he sucks?
June 19th, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Harden’s shot is kind of flaccid tonite… the moment’s just not right I guess.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
Okc is done.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
Old people love Lincolns and Buick. For old people, they used to think of Lincolns as Pepsi to Cadillac’s coca-cola. Not really anymore but old people largely will avoid buying a Toyota/Honda/Hyundai and they specialize in the sedans and such.
Shit, I once had a Crown Vic with 11k miles (bought at an estate sale for $1700) . I terrorized this city in that think. The engine was the same as the Ford Mustang. Modern Day BluesMobile. I miss that thing.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
Some tight lipped officials on the last sequence…
June 19th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
At least perkins fights for rebounds… Hell, Pietrus on this OKC team would be a plus. At least he would hustle for rebounds when he was cold from three
June 19th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
That odyssey commercial is awesome.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:06 PM
Yeah, he’s in AAA I believe.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:07 PM
My hate for him pretty much died when he stopped talking to much and stopped fading away from the moment. Essentially, the 45 point game made me respect him.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:07 PM
Cant believe the refs missed those two wide open 3s and layup for OKC. This is rigged!

James Harden wish he could be Joe Johnson right now.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:08 PM
James Harden is choking worse than Nick Anderson
June 19th, 2012 at 11:08 PM
Nobody actually saying its rigged. Nice try though from the usual miami fan

It’s weird, I stumbled on mmj senior yeAr, and the transition from wsp started. Mmj has dominated my tunes since MP
MMJ at Starlight here in KC. Looking forward to it.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:09 PM
Yeah the one I purchased was the last of the boxier frames but a lot of people would give pause. In this area, most PDs have gone to the dark cruisers so you’re pretty screwed by the time you see them.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
Wade hit that 3 right in James Harden’s eye
June 19th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
Oh, I thought he was out of options for some reason.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
Yawn.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:11 PM
Obviously you didnt read the comments.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:12 PM
There’s a guy on the main street that leaves his Crown Vic on the street almost all the time, and he has one of those lights too? Not sure how that happened. I know its there but it does slow a lot of people down.
I’d bitch but I actually prefer the cops in my area for speeding. A few years ago we were over-ridden by assholes and crotchrockets. Made it completely unbearable. It sounded like we lived outside the Indy 500 track.

June 19th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
Kc- if you haven’t seen them before, you are in for a show. The best live band I have ever seen. Great energy, and the music can’t be topped. I get misty every time I see them.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
Has any of the Big 3 been in foul trouble once in the Finals? I think LeBron may have fouled out in Game 1. But I may be thinking of the WCF.

*ECF.

NBA should just go FIFA and call immediately for the stretcher. I’d DIE to see them cart Wade or Pierce off.

MP: You talking about the Wade block right? Yes it was.
June 19th, 2012 at 11:23 PM

What part of soccer requires quad strength? definitely not kicking the ball… the rest is running. my guess is its the occasional sprinting since they have sprinter and not long distance runner legs.
