Euro 2012: UEFA Fines Nicklas Bendtner $126,000 For Underwear Stunt, Dwarfing Racism and Fan Violence Fines

UEFA has sent a loud, clear message. Not about racism or fan violence, but its monopoly on sponsorship deals. Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner has been fined 100,000 euros ($126,000) and suspended for exposing his Paddy Power underwear after scoring a goal against Portugal.

For perspective, this individual fine was more than three times the collective fine levied to Russia (30,000 euros) and twenty-five times that of Poland (4,000 euros) for incidents of fan violence. It is more than six times UEFA’s fine of Croatia for racism at Euro 2008.

UEFA’s priorities are clear. The extraordinary tone deafness would be laughable, but for the grave social fallout.

Actually, they probably figured the dude got paid $100k by the sponsor so they took that into account and raised the bar.

At a Cambridge, MA bar yesterday, got a little tense when a European said when Mario Gomez was subbed off, “Good, he’s not a real German anyway.” Some black girl (cheering on the Germans) got pissed, started yelling at him that if it was a joke, it wasn’t funny. He didn’t back down and the 100 people in there got real quiet. He piped up 5 minutes later, “why is it so tense in here, everyone? Relax!” I responded, “Bro, it’s probably best you leave.” Applause.

Der Kaiser, I’ll admit you’ve annoyed me greatly in the past. But I’ve gotten past it. I don’t care for your shots at baseball and I feel like some of what you say is ridiculously over the top,, but I’ve grown to appreciate what you have to say about soccer. I like to follow it, but I enjoy reading people who truly know what they are talking about. So I give you that.
