NBA Finals: Could Miami’s Defensive Solution Be LeBron on Westbrook?
Thunder 105, Heat 94 was fun – Miami once led by 13! One-point game going into the 4th quarter! – and simple:
Miami’s LeBron (30 points on 24 shots) and Wade (19 points on 19 shots) were outplayed by Oklahoma City’s Durant (36 points, 17 in the 4th) and Westbrook (27 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds), and now the Thunder lead, 1-0. With less than a minute left in the 4th quarter, Durant and Westbrook had scored 39 points in the 2nd half; the Heat had 38 points.
How dominant was Durant in the 4th? Last year in the Finals, LeBron James scored 18 points in the 4th quarter – in the series. (Surely you remember his struggles.) Durant’s 17 in Game 1 nearly matched that total.
At the risk of reading too much into one game in a place the Thunder never lose … advantage, Scotty Brooks. He threw the kitchen sink at LeBron for the first three quarters (Harden, Westbrook, Durant, double teams, etc) and then saved his best defender, Thabo Sefolosha, for last. He mostly neutralized LeBron in the fourth. Brooks stuck with active, effective Nick Collison (8 points, 10 rebounds), and didn’t force the NBA’s best 6th man, James Harden (2-of-6 in only 22 minutes) into action. Meanwhile, Spoelstra only played six guys (seven if you count Mike Miller’s ineffective 10 minutes). Coming off a grueling 7-game series, that may not have been wise. Chalmers and Battier shot 9-of-12 for 23 points in the first half; they shot 2-of-4 in the 2nd half when OKC made defensive adjustments. LeBron got little help from Wade and jump-shooting Chris Bosh (4-of-11).
If the Heat are to steal game two, the big question has to be how the Heat plan on slowing down Durant. Do you put Battier and Haslem on the league’s best scorer early, and then have LeBron lock him up in the 4th? You can’t have LeBron shadow Durant, plus carry the Heat for three quarters offensively and deliver in the 4th. Or do you consider putting LeBron on Westbrook and taking him out of the game? Would Brooks then be forced to tinker his lineup for offense?
Since you’ll want to talk about LeBron … I thought he settled for too many jumpers. This shot chart shows he attempted 10 and only made two. I think what we’ll find in this series if that LeBron can go off like he did in Game 4 vs. Indiana or Game 6 vs. Boston and carry the Heat to victory … but the Thunder are far too skilled offensively to let one player beat them.

Goddammit these are funny. Do you have LBJ posters on your ceiling too?
June 13th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Hell no. Westbrook blew past him the few times I saw him being guarded by James. James needs to be covering Durant straight up and Battier helping on Westbrook.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Thunder in 3 games.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
the solution is the heat going home 0-2
June 13th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Wade has got to stop shooting long jumpers. Since the start of the Boston series, he is 13-41 from 16-23 feet and 3-14 from 3. So, if the shot is outside of 15′, Wade has a 29% chance of making it.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
The Heat aren’t going to win this series playing small ball.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
James needs to be on Durant in the 4th. Durant was abusing Battier the last quarter…he has a good 2 inches on him and can score at any time against him.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Top to bottom the Thunder are so much better than the Heat, especially with the way Wade has been playing of late. Also the Heat needed the home court advantage much more so than the Thunder.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
IMO, the main difference was Nick Collison. Miami played extremely small ball in the 4th, and OKC had no trouble getting offensive rebounds and scoring the second or third time around. I know Joel Anthony sucks, but at least he can rebound the ball.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Triangle and 2 with 2 guys on Durant
June 13th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Durant shitting on MIA in the 4th like Dirk did last year.
Rinse, repeat.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
If Wade is truly injured, like many say that he is, I truly believe the Heat would be better off not even playing him. That way, LeBron won’t have to worry about deferring to his pal and trying to get him going. We all know that’s not happening though, especially with the frailty that is Miami’s bench.
/Remember when Norris Cole was going to be a key contributor off the bench for the Heat?
//Yeah, me either.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
So, they need to play big ball with Juwan & Turiaf?
June 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
good recap TBL….agree Scotty Brooks made the right moves last night
if Lebron is the great defender that media heads say he is, then why isn’t on Durant all game?
i’ve hated on Durant in the past, but man he is really impressing me….its too bad he went to a school like Texas
June 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
OKC has too many weapons/defenders for Miami. Most teams don’t have that luxury and it will expose the lack of depth on the Heat. OKC is deep, athletic and talented as hell. Heat have the three (who have heart/psyche issues) and not much else. Should be an enjoyable Thunder win in 6.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Patiently awaiting the Wade 73 free-throw game with Bennett Salvatore on the whistle.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Well, after the half, the Heat switched every screen, so I imagine they will focus more on their coverages than who is checking who.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
He also protects the rim will which would be of value considering Westbrook and Durant got the the hoop with ease.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
The dude LIVES for the fourth quarter.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Not a huge NBA guy (although I have tuned in frequently during the playoffs) so this has probably been hashed over numerous times…
but having seen Spoelstra’s “exasperated face” a few times now I can’t imagine anyone on that roster taking him seriously.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Also, people need to give Thabo and the Thunder’s help D on Lebron some credit. That was great to watch after seeing James blow past Bass a million times in the last series.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
I laughed at the title of the first video.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Battier and Bosh can shot all the threes they like this series. Have at it.
And when did Wade go from dazzling tough as nails competitor to shitty, petulant cunt?
June 13th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Remember when Norris Cole was going to be a key contributor off the bench for the Heat?
//Yeah, me either
he was the best PG in the league the first half of the season
/Dan Lebatard
June 13th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
This.
If this series comes down to coaching and match-ups, the Heat are in a world of hurt.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Haha, no. They need to play straight up with a combination of Haslem/Bosh/Anthony on the floor at the same time.
Otherwise, the Thunder can play Westbrook, Thabo, Harden, and Durant at the same time and spread the floor on offense while also allowing their best defender to check LeBron and their worst defender on Battier.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
That too…Westbrook was blowing by Battier/Chalmers/Wade after every screen at the top. When there was help defense, it would be 3 guys, which left Collison or Durant open to get the offensive board.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Youre going to be waiting for a long time. Its the Thunder who are getting the touch calls. I particularly liked the one on Thabo missed dunk where the defender made absolutely no contact.
No one can stay in front of Westbrook, switching on the screen is the only way to slow him down. I understand not having Bron on Durant early, but in the 4th you gotta do it.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I love that Bosh got trigger happy from 3 after game 7. Keep doing that, buddy.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
They actually slowed him down more the first half when they essentially trapped him. They tried switching in the second half after Ibaka made some nice plays off rolls/pops and it was worse.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
June 13th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
The dude LIVES for blowing by aging superstars.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Spoelstar’s Game 2 plan: box and one on Durant.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Westbrook is basically 2006 Wade, no one can stay in front of him, questionable outside shot, just keeps driving and get bailed out by the refs.
2012 Wade is, uh, some whiny bitch on her period.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
TBL’s LeBron boner is stronger than ever
June 13th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Thought Brooks made good decisions mostly. That said, the lineup of Harden/Fisher/Cook was awful. How could he possibly think that would work?
June 13th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Anybody else think that Russell Westbrook is playing alot like Dwyane Wade used to play?
June 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
/ looks at Collison being called for a blocking foul when it was clearly a charge
/ looks at Lebron going to the line when Thabo didn’t touch him
Nope.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
if Westbrook wins title, is he now the best PG in the league?
June 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
If they arent down by too many in the first 3… OKC played like shit in the first half, especially on defense.
Nice analysis though TBL
June 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Coop beat me to the punch. Good call, sir.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
June 13th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
The NBA commercial shows this perfectly; different players at their press conferences joking or just answering a simple question and there is cunty dwade complaining about the pacers celebrating a victory. my hate for wade is about to eclipse my lbj hate pretty soon.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I still don’t understand how any of the Heat take Spo seriously.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Anybody remember rumors at the beginning of the year about a Rondo for Westbrook trade? Anybody still think it would help both teams out?
/Serious question
June 13th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Of course. Thats how these things work.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Spoelstra needs to go to his bench more, even if they’re mediocre to terrible. OKC’s depth will run Miami out of the building otherwise. That period towards the end of the 3rd to middle of the 4th you could tell the Heat were out of gas and could not contest the Thunder on the drives.
He needs to get James Jones, Anthony and even Norris Cole out there. Mike Miller also looks like he can barely run.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Same here. And I never thought that would be the case. Wade was always the good guy. The guy who always played hard, always kept his mouth shut and just went about his business. Now? Not so much…
June 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Tell me more
June 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Van Gundys defense of that call was embarrassing
June 13th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Durant scored 2 points on 0-2 shooting while gaurded by LeBron. He guarded him more than that, but the Heat kept switching.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Mike Miller also looks like he can barely run.
dude has been hurt all year, such a liability on the defensive end too….look at that contract of his too…lol
June 13th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Totally agree. He certainly doesn’t have to yell and scream to be effective, it’s just that his entire demeanor and delivery is humorous. Impossible not to laugh when he addresses the team.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
I agree completely with this. I’m not sure why he fell out of Spo’s rotation, especially considering the amount of pain Miller seems to be in.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
This is the exact same thing people said about him in 2011.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Eddy Curry and Juwan need more PT
June 13th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
cracker jack LIVES for short, balding dudes.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
YES!
June 13th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
By all accounts he works his absolute ass off and never sleeps and I’m sure the Heat players see this. Plus, Riley’s backing adds some clout.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I guess the only saving grace is that it’s a different injury. Last year, he looked like Edward Scissorhands
June 13th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
From what I hear, he’s tight with Wade, and that was a big reason he got the job in the first place.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Ever since I saw Wade punk him on national TV in front of the team, I have very little respect for him.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Agree that Wade’s the worst.
June 13th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
As a coach I mean.
That, and his motivational speeches seem overly dramatic to me. I remember during the 2010-2011 season when, during the second or third game of the NBA season, he went into a Denzel-in-Remember-The-Titans like spiel about adversity and this and that. Every time I hear him on wired its something similar.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
despite it being the norm to either blast lebron or fellate him, it should be pointed out that he made one FG in the last minutes of the game, and routinely passed out of drives that he was finishing earlier.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
8, last 8 minutes of the game
June 13th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
So if the Thunder blow Miami out do Lebron, Wade and Bosh demand to be traded to OKC for 10% of their salaries?
June 13th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Van Gundy was right. The ball was already gathered, the first step was already taken and then Collison got into position to take the charge. College ball has blinded the line between good defense and getting in the way. The NBA should make it much harder to get a charge call.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Learned from the Pat Riley coaching U, only he can’t quite pull it off.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
He was being closed off really well every time he drove, I don’t blame him for that. I was more concerned about the Heat playing hot potato with the ball, especially Dwyane Wade, who would fake it, take a dribble, fake again, and then pass.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Wrong. Westbrook has the 4th highest FG% in the league on all shots outside of 16 feet.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Agree 100%.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Yep. His jumpstop + jumper is automatic.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Well, this is completely wrong. He made two FGs and three FTs. He missed two other shots and had an assist and turnover. He did not shy away from the ball at all, especially when compared to the Dallas debacle last year.
Sometimes, you have to credit the opposing defense, which was very good. Did Lebron play his best game, especially in the 4th? No. But you can’t fit his play into some bullshit narrative.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
NO. NO NO NO NO.
JMac, now you’re just making it personal. LeBron is not a great on ball defender of quick point guards!!!!! DAMN YOU! STOP TROLLING ME!
LeBron was guarding Westbrook and got dusted twice while Westbrook shot uncontested layups. It’s the team defense, you son of a bitch.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Nice post though, despite the LeBron defending PGs stuff.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Sometimes, you have to credit the opposing defense, which was very good. Did Lebron play his best game, especially in the 4th? No. But you can’t fit his play into some bullshit narrative.
maybe i was wrong and he hit 2 field goals (really thought it was one), but its not a bullshit narrative. i pointed out he did not do much in the 4th, for whatever reason, and i am right.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
I don’t agree with that. This game was less Lebron’s fault, and more KD taking the damn thing. I remember when the Thunder were leading by 10 or so, Lebron drove hard to the hole twice and finished, once with the and-1 to cut the lead. Of course, the Thunder had a response for every Miami basket. I didn’t think he was that passive, just that Miami was playing hot potato with the ball towards the end and shooting long shots.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Maybe, but nearly all of his shots that are outside of 16 feet are two pointers.
I’d rather have a guy with a worse shooting percentage who shoots 3s instead. More efficient that way. And it would be reflected in TS%.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Haven’t read all the comments yet, so I don’t know if someone already mentioned this, but I don’t understand why OKC plays Perkins and Ibaka at the same time. Mostly, I don’t see what value Perkins is going to bring to the Thunder in this series. There is no low-post threat that he can guard effectively (unlike the Spurs with Duncan). Collison provided much more value last night (and probably will in the series) than Perkins.
I understand playing your rotation and giving guys rest, but when Ibaka and Perk are in at the same time, OKC’s offense gets bogged down a little, and their defensive rotations are slower. This seemed to be one major reason Miami got so many open 3′s to begin the game.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Also, I think Perkins has the worst hands I’ve ever seen.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
For the most part, I thought the Thunder appeared to be wise to Wade’s pump fake game. He might be better off rising and shooting immediately a little more often.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
+1
June 13th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Guy can’t hit a jumper to save his life tho.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Exactly….why the hell would the Thunder ever go for a pump fake. I’m sure they’re actually praying he shoots it.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
“Lebron didn’t score + assist on every made Heat basket, stop every Thunder from scoring and rebound every miss. Ergo, he didn’t do much.”
The Thunder stopped Lebron from doing everything. He made some plays, tried to make others, but the Thunder stopped him and had an answer at every turn. That’s pretty much what happened.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I said it before the series and I’ll say it again…if you can beat a Spurs team that won 20 straight games four consecutive times, you’re ready to win a title.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
/ OT, while waiting on today’s Euro 2012 post
The U.S. men’s team is struggling to advance in WC qualifying against the likes of Guatemala, Jamaica and ANtigua. Wasn’t Klinsmann supposed to cure this problem?
June 13th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
They beat Antigua 3-1 and they never do well playing on the road in Guatemala. They were also robbed last night and should have won 2-0.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
It certainly didn’t look that way early in the game when he was catching-and-shooting more. Wade appears to me to get himself out of a rhythmn by pump faking too much late in the games. 2006 spoiled him. Can’t win every Finals by being gifted free throws everytime you touch the ball.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
I thought the Tunder did a great job of not freaking out and abandoning their plan. They continued to sag and clog the lane even after Battier and Chalmers made some early shots. They also did a hell of a job of getting back and barricading the lane in transition.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
I was told Scott Brooks is an idiot who can’t coach his way out of a paper bag. Your comment leads me to think that is not the case.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Gotta give Screamin A. credit – last night on the pregame show he predicted the score exactly.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
They were very good helping in the paint. Some of the finishes Lebron had were spectacular and over multiple defenders as well.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
The Heat may also want to consider running a play or 2 for Bosh on the block. I did see him draw doubles the rare times he was down there Game 1.
June 13th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Let’s be honest. Other than Lebron v. Durant, which is a slight advantage one way or the other, the Thunder have a pretty huge talent edge at every position. Even at PF, because Bosh is clearly not at full strength.
So “staying the course” is a really pretty simple thing to want to do. Talent wins.
