Euro 2012: Portugal vs. Denmark
Denmark is the easiest team to beat in this group. As the Netherlands found, that doesn’t mean beating them would be easy. The Portuguese are well familiar with Denmark, having been paired with them in their past two qualifying groups. Portugal won just one of the four matches. In that match, the Danes were missing about half their Starting XI.
We should not attribute the Danish win against Holland entirely to fortune, though it was, largely, the product of poor Dutch finishing. The Danes conceded 32 shots and 11 corners. None of the chances were converted. You may see Denmark opt to start Michael Silberbauer in this match [Update: Or not]. The more defensively minded midfielder man-marked Ronaldo well when Denmark beat Portugal in October.
Portugal had the opposite luck last round. They outplayed Germany and were foiled by great saves from Manuel Neuer and the cross bar as well as some excellent last-line defending by Mats Hummels. The 11-2 corner ratio is testament to the incisiveness of Portugal’s attacks. The Portuguese mistake was waiting until they went down in the final 20 minutes to ratchet up the pressure. The Germans were vulnerable. Deserving a draw, at least, they lost. As a consequence, a win here is crucial.

Over/under on Ronaldo flops in this match?

UEFA vs Putin. Who’s the cojones to make this a real fight?!

U.S. Open tickets going for as low as $62 for Sunday? Dang, wish I could be there.

Portugal pounce!
Picture perfect for Portugal!
Announcer in this one is great. Nice flick, Pepe
June 13th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
God I hate Pepe.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Well Portugal came to play. Postiga makes it 2-0.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
And the Danes get one back! Bendtner makes it 2-1.

3 goals in a half? Nice
June 13th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Hopefully the Netherlands beat Germany tonight so the entire group is on 3 points going into Sunday.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
If Denmark are going to lose here I’d rather Germany win, they clinch the group then and will rest players against Denmark.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
All of this.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Love Portugal’s all white kits. Why is Ronaldo wearing long sleeves? My god he’s gorgeous.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Tonight? We’re on Merican time, bro.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
I’d actually be fine with that. I pussed out and picked the Netherlands to advance but would rather they be eliminated and have nothing to play for against Portugal.
June 13th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Because he does whatever the fuck he wants. Last game he wore long sleeves in the first half and short sleeves in the second.

I have no idea how it’s possible this man does not have Magic Johnson disease yet.
Great match, c’mon Danes.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Seconded. With the games going off at the same time on the final day of matches for Group B on June 17, that would be awesome.

When asked what I’m thankful for at Thanksgiving, I will assuredly mention ESPN3.

CR7
Club goals: Apps Goals
2009– Real Madrid 101 112
International Goals
2003– Portugal 92 32
Given that Internationl play is much more difficult but there is a huge difference here. Compare some other players:
Messi
2005– Argentina 70 26
Drogba
2002– Côte d’Ivoire 85 55
Robben
2003– Netherlands 58 17
Luis Fabiano
2003– Brazil 43 28
Rooney
2003– England 74 28
Like CR7 has a mental block or something
June 13th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
You mean the disease that will make him a shitty TV commentator someday?
June 13th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
He’s underwhelmed, but gets a bad rap. If you look at goals per game, his ratio (.333) is about the same as Messi (.371), Rooney (.378), and Robben (.293).
I mean, Maradona only had 34 in 91 for Argentina (.374)…
June 13th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
He has the largest sample size though. One more goal for any of those players significantly boost their percentage.
Less offensive game then. Also difference between .333 and .374 is a great deal of lost or won games.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
What the data really shows is that Drogba is amazing.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
And CR7 misses again.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
It’s 4 goals over 100 games. Not a great deal. Agree to disagree.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
BENDTNER AGAIN! 2-2
June 13th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
DANES SON, DANES! What a goal. Planked it into the net from 4 ft in the air.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
RonaLOLdo.
Good.
Fuck Portugal.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Sheeeeit that’s not much.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Well, the sitter that Ronaldo missed looms very large.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
What’s Ronaldo’s Big 4 sports equivalent? Taking into account his struggles in big tournaments. A-Rod? LeBron?
June 13th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Wowowow, great goal for Portugal, what a hit son, what a hit!
June 13th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Fuck you, Portugal. You’re a fucking growth on Spain’s face. That is all.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Fuck.

Imagine if Tom Brady never won a Super Bowl… Best I got.

That mohawk’d hair gel jag get a yellow. Good. Hope his Giucci shoes get stained tonight.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Nice.
June 13th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Ronaldo has won the Champions League, which is arguably more important to these guys than the WC/Euros. So Peyton Manning.
