Meyers Leonard is Now Being Strongly Considered in the Top 10 of the NBA Draft
Meyers Leonard, the rapidly-rising center from Illinois, is 7-foot-1, 250-pounds, but you probably didn’t hear a lot about him in the Big Ten last year. Sure, he led the league in blocked shots and was 3rd in rebounds, but the Illini were terrible, they fired their coach, and didn’t make the NCAA tournament. So the sophomore’s impressive leap from his freshman year may have gone unnoticed outside of Big Ten country.
But if you’re an NBA fan in Portland, Detroit or Milwaukee, you need to get familiar with Leonard real quick. Two sources tell me that Leonard is quickly becoming the third most coveted big man in the draft, and he zoomed past UNC’s Tyler Zeller and John Henson at the NBA draft combine last week.
One source says Leonard is getting serious consideration from Portland (picks 6 and 11), Detroit (8th pick, in dire need of a center) and Milwaukee (12th pick, also desperately in need of a center).
Leonard shares one interesting trait with Anthony Davis, who will be the No. 1 pick – both entered high school as guards, then had massive growth spurts (in the case of Leonard, six inches between his freshman and sophomore year), and thus they became coordinated, athletic big men. Here’s my favorite Leonard highlight from high school:
As always, immediate help (Zeller) vs. upside/potential (Leonard) will be hotly debated in the Portland, Detroit and Milwaukee war rooms (it is glossed over here, too). If you’re Detroit, do you prefer Zeller or Leonard as a wingman up front to Greg Monroe?
If you’re a GM, would you go with the safer pick (Zeller, whose nearly identical stats during his junior and senior years at UNC perhaps suggest he’s “maxed out”), or Leonard, whose meteoric rise at Illinois may portend another big jump in the NBA to perhaps being a player like Brook Lopez, except much tougher?
We’ll have our first post-lottery mock draft Thursday. Here was our mock from early May.

Any time you have a chance to take an Honorable Mention All-Big 10 player in the lottery, you have to do it.

Is this really how NBA people think?

So if he goes to Portland, where will he rank on the Bowie-Oden scale?
June 12th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Davis, Robinson, Beal, Kidd-Gilchrist, Drummond and Barnes are going in the Top 6. After that, it’s a question of what you love or what you think you can live with. So maybe Leonard does jump up in draft boards, it’s not impossible.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
When the hell did you become Chad Ford? This is new, right?
June 12th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Conclusion: worst draft class ever.

James Augustine 2.0
June 12th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I’d take him over Rivers.

THE FUCK ARE YOU GETTING THAT TATTOED ON YOURSELF FOR? as if being a athletic giant wasn’t enough indication that you’re “blessed.” thanks for rubbing it in.

Stanley Roberts. John “Hot Plate” Williams.
If you extend it to JaCarcass Bustall, you could make a case for LSU producing more I’ll-eat-myself-out-of-the-league athletes than any other institution of higher learning.
Our players don’t matriculate, they masticate.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Leonard is a raging d-bag who thinks he’s a lot better than he is. Bust city.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
If we doing a commenter mock draft, I take the Hornets dammit!

He’s still in shock that coach Thibs hasn’t been fired yet
June 12th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
This does look like a weak class. No Euros of note, and guys going in the top 5 (Beal, Drummond, Barnes) who failed to dominate during their brief stay in college. I guess that’s how it’s going to be now, we’re not really going to see guys develop at the college level, teams dont seem to mind stashing a #1 pick in the D-league for a year or two.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
fine by me, as long as he doesn’t end up as a piston.

I guess technically it was due to injury, but the reason he was injured so much, in my opinion, was because his fat ass couldn’t stay in shape so I’d throw him in there as well. How’s Tyrus Thomas looking these days? Fat? Last I heard was he was getting ready to knuckle up with Paul Silas after one of the many ass whippings the Bobcats took this year.

Seems to me that even though you may ‘dominate’ in college, that doesn’t mean you’re going to be a great pro. Michael Beasley was a beast in his one year in Manhattan and now he’s toiling away in Minnesota. NBA and NFL seem to be getting a lot more similar in this regard.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
The passengers on my flight through Cincinnati look like the cast from The People Under the Stairs.
Someone should quarantine these mouth breathers.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
I am no NBA draft expert…but I have been hearing for like 18 months that this would be one of the strongest in years.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Leonard is not worth a top 10 pick. He reminds me of BJ Mullens, all the physical tools but a punk. Purdue’s underwhelming bigs shut him down in Purdue’s sweep of the Illini last season.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
After Baby Gerald at #1 it just seems there isn’t another sure fire player. Maybe not worst draft class, but most gambles and upside players.
Not a good sign when nobody wants the two pick.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Someone should quarantine these mouth breathers.
and yet they bought the same price ticket as you
June 12th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
When Robert Swift 2.0 is being hyped as a top ten pick, yes.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
I want to play this course.
Shocker they’re from Mizzou.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
I just looked back at least year’s and immediately recant my statement.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
And when Austin Rivers is being given lottery promises.
Maybe it’s just because there’s such a steep drop from #1 to everyone else this year.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
BJ Mullens is a punk?
June 12th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
I don’t know that Leanord will pan out, but Russillo was saying the other day that he was one of the most impressive players at the combine. I guess his skills were better than any other post player and jaws were on the floor when he was going through the workouts.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
It’s amazing what the Thunder/Soncis front office has done the past few years considering the shitty drafts they’ve had before getting Durant. A few of their first rounders over the years include Saer Sene, Johan Petro, the previously mentioned Swift, Vladimir Radmanovic, and the white bread combo of Luke Ridnour and Nick Collison.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Bwahahaha
June 12th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
I think now more than ever you have to wait a few years to see how a draft class will perform. Even the top 5 guys are projects coming out of college. The ’08 and ’09 drafts do look quite a bit stronger than the ’10 and ’11 drafts though. Tyreke Evans was ROY out of the ’09 class and he’s not even one of the top 5 guys from that draft.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
How do you think they got in the position to pick in the top 5 for 3 straight years? Sometimes it pays to suck. Also they hired Sam Presti.
June 12th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
It cost Seattle their team, no?
June 12th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Cody Zeller laughs at this
June 12th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
And being compared to Sleepy Floyd by some sports bloggers out there who will remain anonymous… Let me know the first time Rivers scores 29 points in a quarter of a playoff game.
June 12th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
yes, really. This is the worst draft I can remember. Anthony Davis is the only player from this class who will ever sniff an All-Star game.
June 12th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Rivers won’t be great but good
June 12th, 2012 at 6:54 PM
in 5 years we will look back at this post and see that i am right when i say leonard was the bets player in this class
