Heat-Thunder Will Be Fantastic, But Should You Skip ESPN’s Pregame Show on ABC?

David Zurawik of the Baltimore Sun sounds about as excited as I am for the NBA Finals, but he’s panicking about the ESPN’s pregame coverage on ABC. You can almost hear the fear in his fingers typing this:
I’m excited about that, too, but Johnson’s way-over-the-top enthusiasm and litany of superlatives about the series and the matchup reminded me of how badly ESPN lost its moral compass in covering the signing of James with Miami two years. Remember that embarrassment that ran under the heading “The Decision”?
And I don’t know which was worse, that hype or one of Johnson’s co-panelists, Chris Broussard, immediately jumping in to compare the Durant-James matchup to Magic and Bird. You could hear the sound of the giant suck-up right through the TV.
For the record, Michael Wilbon and Jon Barry are the other two members of the quartet at the table, and compared to TNT’s studio show, this is four guys in a sports bar who you wish would quiet down or find a way to focus their conversation so that their chatter enriched rather than annoyed.
The solution is simple, David: Don’t watch the pregame show. (And if they’re going to put Stephen A. Smith opposite Skip Bayless in the evenings, as they apparently did tonight – damn good thing I wasn’t watching – hell, avoid the entire network until tip-time.) I haven’t done it all season, and the result is that I haven’t had my dreamy childhood memories of Magic Johnson – my favorite player of all-time, regardless of sport – shattered by his poor commentary.
The pick here: Thunder in 6, James Harden MVP. (Everyone’s picking LeBron or Durant; I’ll go out on a limb here.)
My fear is Scott Brooks trying to go “small” at the end of games like he did in Game 1 against San Antonio, and giving LeBron a free lane to the bucket. I think we’ll see a lot of Collison, Ibaka, Durant, Westbrook and Harden late. Collison to defend Bosh; Ibaka on LeBron? The only fear then is LeBron drawing Ibaka 25-feet from the hoop, and blowing by him like he did Brandon Bass in Game 7. But I’d feel much more confident if I were OKC having LeBron take 20-footers late in a tension-packed 4th quarter.
If you think having Collison out there is nuts, and want Ibaka to defend Bosh, well then the Heat are going to take the NBA’s leading shot blocker, and move him out to the perimeter, where Bosh did plenty of damage in Game 7 against Boston. That opens the lane for Wade and LeBron to attack the hoop relentlessly.
Wait, did I just talk myself into taking Miami?
No. No. Thunder in Six it is.

That ESPN NBA Pre/Halftime/Postgame show is absolutely horrible.
Not a single likeable guy in the group, and they all consistently change their picks as the series goes on.
It could be just as bad as NFLN pregame with Deion and Irvin.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:34 PM
Don’t watch the pregame show.
I was hoping this was going to be in this post somewhere. Pregame shows are awful for the most part.
Although, I heart College Gameday for football. It does not work well for hoops.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:35 PM
Thunder in 3
June 12th, 2012 at 8:36 PM
Also what KC said.
When has a pregame/halftime show ever given you some new insight that you thought was amazing? Just a bunch of idiot analysts with some puff piece feel good stories thrown in.
About as useless as sideline reporters when it comes to useful information.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:42 PM
You can’t duplicate the atmosphere but I think there’s better substance with the basketball shop, despite being an asshat when Bob Knight is involved he’s giving you good stuff…the football show anymore is just Corso hamming it up and them killing time between celebrity picks and stories about sick kids meeting players
Heat in 6, think their defense on the perimeter is the difference
June 12th, 2012 at 8:42 PM
They had Skip and SAS babbling at each other like usual in the 8-830 portion on ESPN. Just dreadful
June 12th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
Forgot to add biggest fear for OKC – LeBron does to Durant what he did to Derrick Rose last year. The good news is, at least Durant should be able to get off good shots due to height/length.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:46 PM
I think the Heats perimeter D is overrated.
Boston had plenty of open looks but guys were not hitting their shots.
The Thunder have much better overall shooters on the floor than the Celtics did especially with Ray Allen not 100%.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:48 PM
I didn’t watch that unfunny fag kimmell either. He is horrid.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
Chicago didn’t have Westbrook/Harden to help out Rose. Even if LBJ shuts down Durant, El Heat still have to worry about 2 other top 15 players in the NBA.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:50 PM
Heat in five, then I retreat into my anti sports cave and get my crying pillow.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
Heat take game 1 then Thunder take next 4 to win series in 5 games. I think Thunder come out with too much adrenaline and tire in the 4th but learn their lesson and take next 4 in a row.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:54 PM
Tonite prediction: Thunder 107, Heat 93.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:55 PM
TBL hears “Sanchez” get introduced, sports a chub, then realizes his profound disappointment that it’s not Mark.
June 12th, 2012 at 8:58 PM
I’m with Rondoman on OKC -5.
Not thrilled with 9 pm start. Would an 830 tip have hurt?
June 12th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
To TBL’s question, I wonder if a non-West coast team participating finals has pushed the Finals start time up a bit. I imagine though, that a Finals game starting at 5:30 PM western time isn’t ideal for the number 2 TV market in the country regardless.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
MLB heard such cries from its fans and moved up the start time of World Series game…Stern’s no Bud, that’s for sure
Perhaps, but the Celtics are an odd team to judge them against since you don’t have to defend their PG and Garnett was playing well down low…still would be nervous of OKC going cold but still settling for jumpers at important times
June 12th, 2012 at 9:04 PM
Why do people feel the need to prop up TNT’s show? They are all similarly awful. I try and time it correctly to turn it on right before tipoff.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:08 PM

The thing I don’t like about the hoops one is they bring a couple thousand kids in at 7:00 in the morning then kick them out until the game later that night. College Football Saturday is an event the whole football loving nation gets started with. The hoops one just feels like a way too early pre-game show.
And I’m a huge College Hoops fan, so maybe I’m being over-critical.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:12 PM
I think the difference with TNT is that they understand pregame shows as a concept is awful so they don’t take themselves seriously. They’re more willing to laugh at the entire analysis and prognostication trade which is refreshing… ESPN refuses to have a sense of humor about itself.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:13 PM
by the way someone is getting blown out tonite… I don’t necessarily know who.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:13 PM
JMac, how many fucking times do I have to point out this was an obvious team defensive effort by the Heat?
June 12th, 2012 at 9:13 PM
Is there a more pointless player than Perkins? He’s getting lit up by Battier. He does absolutely nothing.
Of course, Brooks will wait till game 3 to make any adjustments like the WCF.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:15 PM
but even with the Lakers in the finals, weren’t the games starting at 930?
June 12th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
You just read my mind… watch him running up the court on change of possession he looks like he’s running in quick sand.
Also i might have asked this before but there can’t be a less skilled offensive player in the NBA who gets regular minutes. Inexplicably media types drool over him.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:21 PM
they need Perkins to get out of the West. he’s a pivotal interior defender vs. LA, Duncan (and if they had played Memphis he would have been crucial, too)
June 12th, 2012 at 9:27 PM
Heat blowout
June 12th, 2012 at 9:32 PM
Goodness, johnny venters couldnt find the strike zone…walking guys..and then got behind a-rod, so he threw a heater and arod hit a grand slam. Braves fans are raining serious boos on Venters and fredi gonzalez. Just fucking awful pitching.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:45 PM
He’s really not, tho. He lives off reputation. Last 2 years, he doesn’t rebound, doesn’t block shots, and he gets scored on by anyone with quickness.
Just for fun I looked up his defensive +/- this year. Not too bad but thunder are a half point worse defensively when he’s on the court.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:45 PM
Damn you Thunder. Damn you to hell. Fucking phonies. Why Spurs why?
June 12th, 2012 at 9:47 PM
it’s early, guys. Thunder haven’t played in forever. Miami just played Sunday. relax. Thunder will rally
June 12th, 2012 at 9:49 PM
I agree.
They havent played in 6 days, thats gotta be the longest stretch since the season started.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:50 PM
I hope you’re right Mr. J-Mac. I’ll have to boycott ESPN for weeks if the Heat win.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:51 PM
Boycott ESPN regardless.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:53 PM
wait so shouldn’t the thunder be well rested then? I can’t keep track of when layoffs are good and when its not.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:54 PM
Nothing like sliding under a guy that’s in mid air and taking a “charge”.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:54 PM
yes, Thunder are well rested. no games in awhile, plus young team, very little finals experience outside of D Fish … cold, nervous start.
June 12th, 2012 at 9:56 PM
A bullshit charge call? No way!!!
June 12th, 2012 at 9:56 PM
you need Perkins against that beef in the west. you can’t root him out. im not saying he’s elite or the best post defender in basketball, but without him and starting Collison or Nazr, they ain’t getting out of the west. i do think he’s overpaid
June 12th, 2012 at 9:57 PM
I always thought if a team is rolling and clicking on all cylinders the last thing they want is extended time off.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:00 PM
The Thunder winning this series depends on Westbrook IMO.
If he can facilitate, like he did at times against SA, I think they win.
If he turns into bad Russell, they are in trouble. Currently 2-9 in this game.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:00 PM
Chalmers and Battier with 23 points so far. That’s unexpected. Hopefully OKC can keep it within reason and start hitting some shots in the 2nd half.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
Really disapppointed in the OKC D right now.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:03 PM
I doubt anyone on the Thunder is in any way rattled(or rattled any more than the heat players) by the fact that its the NBA finals and not say the WCF. I’d take a better team over the more experienced one every day of the week.
“Experience” is this nebulous all purpose filler used to conveniently explain stuff.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
Miami up by double digits and Lebron and Wade are 6-17.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
This right here.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Bullshit,lbj
June 12th, 2012 at 10:06 PM
LOL at how bad Bron just missed* that 3.
*made
June 12th, 2012 at 10:06 PM
so the heat have no shotblocking or even shot challenging at the rim.. thats going to be a problem.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:07 PM
Durant has attempted 1 shot in the 2nd quarter, and only has on FT in the game.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:10 PM
everyone behind the production of “Moves like Jagger” should be liquidated
June 12th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
I support this movement. But the “Moves like Jagr” video was pretty cool.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Moves like Jagr? Jaromir?
June 12th, 2012 at 10:28 PM
hahaha what a fucking terrible call on Chalmers. Was that Ed Malloy?
June 12th, 2012 at 10:29 PM
I didn’t realize you could pick up your dribble and then drop the ball and keep dribbling again.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:30 PM
Lebron contained Westbrook off the dribble one on one right there about as well as he contained Rose last year.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:35 PM
watching on dvr but how many other halves will chalmers/battier combine for 23 points? (or whatever they had)
June 12th, 2012 at 10:38 PM
everyone behind the proliferation of these -outs need to bear hug a transformer during a thunderstorm … if I wanted to wear a cheap XXXL t-shirt to the game I would’ve fucking showed up in one fucktards!
June 12th, 2012 at 10:41 PM
so this doesn’t print stuff in angle brackets … good to know.
June 12th, 2012 at 10:46 PM

June 12th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
There are some pretty good ratings happening tonight.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Mostly interested in that Savages movie because the soundtrack appears to be Nate Dogg … also blake lively and salma hayek.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
And … OKC by 5.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:06 PM
too many writing credits for that movies to be good.
so if the thunder win, can we dismantle the Heat again tomorrow?
June 12th, 2012 at 11:07 PM
That was some great spurs-like passing by the thunder.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:11 PM
Great defense by Collison there.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
The only thing Collison fears is Hakim Warrick going to block a teammate’s shot in the corner
/syracuse 03 national champs.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:14 PM
Is that kevin durant or stretch armstrong?
June 12th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
^ seriously. LeBron didn’t even try to go for the block.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:17 PM
Durant, baby
June 12th, 2012 at 11:17 PM
It’s ridiculous that Durant was that wide open outside the 3 pt line.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:17 PM
How was Collison’s back tap not a back court violation?
June 12th, 2012 at 11:20 PM
Tip outs aren’t considered “possession”; just a loose ball.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:21 PM
I’ve gotta say, no matter what happens in the rest of tonight’s game, I think the Heat are the favorites going forward.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:25 PM
It would be a very poor thought. Miami struggled with boston, a much lesser offensive team. Theres a reason okc is the favorite and its not just the home court advantage
June 12th, 2012 at 11:28 PM
And this observation is based on what exactly, Cheesus?
June 12th, 2012 at 11:30 PM
can’t wait to see how people blame lebron.
he shot 6-for-18, right? Oh, no, that’s Wade
June 12th, 2012 at 11:30 PM
A whole lot of booze and Miami Moon boots.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Just think you’re going to get more and more from Bosh as the series goes on. I still think OKC are a bunch of jump shooters.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:32 PM
oh Durant, now doing it with the pass
June 12th, 2012 at 11:32 PM
So Chris Bosh only shoots 3 pointers now?
June 12th, 2012 at 11:32 PM
And oh yeah, Wade couldn’t possibly play worse.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Agree Wade’s had a bad game. LeBron hasn’t done much in the 2nd half though. Thabo has played very good defense.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
If wade was totally healthy, i could see miami being a favorite. Miami has admitted that the bitch’s knee isn’t 100%
June 12th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
The worst thing that can happen to skilled big man’s offensive game is to make a couple of threes…. just ask Rasheed Wallace.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Other than late in the indiana series, wade has been underachieving the entire playoffs. He’s been relying on refs to bail him out for playing shitty defense and being a 29 percent 3 point shooter this year
June 12th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
It would be silly to blame Lebron. We should focus instead on how well the Thunder are playing, and what great games Durant and Westbrook have had.
If the Thunder pull this out, it would be the expected outcome, IMO. Thunder could go up 2-0 in this series and even then the series isn’t theirs until they win in Miami.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
It also causes random spots of grey hair…
June 12th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Wade gets a free pass from Miami “fans”. I guess a past title forgives whining, complaining, flopping, bad shooting, bad defense, and flagrant fouls
June 12th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
I can’t wait for people to wait for other people to blame Lebron
June 12th, 2012 at 11:38 PM
Heat only 38 2nd half points? Did the Celtics possess their bodies?
June 12th, 2012 at 11:38 PM
collison – MVC
Most valuable caucasian
June 12th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Yup, they’ve played a great game and that’s without Harden doing much.

Battier – MVC
Most valuable caucasian
June 12th, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Yah, a good win without Harden contributing a lot? Watch out..
June 12th, 2012 at 11:42 PM
If Brooks has some balls, he’ll start Collison in game 2. Perkins shouldn’t see a minute on the floor.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Shana Battier – best use of a pack of hot dogs as a hat
June 12th, 2012 at 11:43 PM

Shane courtney battier. Might want to change that middle name, bro
June 12th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
3rd in the NBA in eFG% this regular season, and 2nd in the postseason. Both numbers better than Miami.
The Thunder only shoot about 1.5 less times per game than the Heat inside 9 feet, and about twice more from 10 feet and beyond per game.
June 12th, 2012 at 11:46 PM
Durant and westbrook took it to the rack enough tonight. Its a decent balance
June 12th, 2012 at 11:46 PM
