Video: Union Rags Won the Belmont Stakes
In a race that was sure to be a let-down without potential Triple Crown winner I’ll Have Another, Union Rags provided a thrilling finish on the mile and a half track. Union Rags was a 3-1 favorite in the morning line but finished the day at 5-2.
The Bob Baffert-trained Paynter got out to an early lead while Union Rags started around 5th out of the gate. Jockey John Velazquez came through for owner Phyllis Wyeth though, pushing Union Rags through on the inside rail on the home stretch finishing just ahead of Paynter. This makes the third second place finish for Baffert in the 2012 Triple Crown.
Union Rags finished in 2:30.42.
Union Rags paid $7.50, $4.20, and $3.40
Paynter paid $5.10 and $3.90
Atigun paid $10.60
